What Happened Between JA and The Ref?

I was on a phone call with the sound muted and Johnny was in his 9b match w/Morra when Johnny asked the ref to clean whitey. The ref didn't mark the ball he just snatched it up off the table like he was not happy about it and then JA quickly scrambled to grab a chalk cube and he put it down where he figured the ball should be.

Because I just tuned in and the sound was off I don't know if there were other ball cleaning requests and the ref was not liking it or was it just a mental error?

I wanted to turn up the sound but couldn't.

I did see the ref came over to Johnny after the match was over to discuss it and JA looked generally disinterested.

Can someone fill in the blanks?

best,

I’ll do my best chick.

Johnny asked ref to clean ball. Ref obliged but totally spaced on marking the exact spot. Johnny, being very detailed oriented, pointed out the ref’s mistake and used a piece of chalk to mark the position he believed where whitey last laid. Ball was placed there by the ref and the game resumed. I believe Johnny won that one. They chatted about the incident for a bit and Johnny walked away looking disinterested.

We told the players before the match that the clock would not stop for cleaning the cue ball. Other than non pool material on the ball, chalk is part of the game. The cue ball is cleaned between racks and on fouls and scratches. When Johnny was reminded the clock would no stop he said Hurry. Yes I goofed in trying to hurry and did not mark the spot.

We joked about it and after the match we both laughed about it.

Not surprising to find the player disinterested in the matter at match end.

It is a moot point, by hen.

Chicken joke...then/hen

Also, it was a pretty tough shot on the 8 even if the cue ball got spotted exactly in the right place. Given the circumstances and how the match worked out anyway not a big deal.

Yeah, mistakes happen. Unless it was an extremely sharp cut shot in which the exact placement of the ball could be critical as to the difficulty of the shot, for a neutral referee to have a momentary brain lapse is no big deal - sounds like both players handled it fine - without making too big of a deal about it. Just kind of embarrassing for the ref more than anything.

thank you for your first hand account of it. Because I tuned in right before it happened and had no sound on I had no idea what the story was and now I do. We all have a lapse every now and then. And Johnny did seem to put the chalk down where the ball needed to be so yeah, no big deal...
