what happened to evgeny stalev?

Does anyone remember the year he played Archer at DCC??? His position play wasn't great in a few games but his shotmakng had the crowd watching the match on their toes. Even Archer was sitting at the small table and could not believe the shots Evgeny was making....

It was great to watch and I for one really miss the Executive West as it brought some really special things out of the players.....I guess mostly from being so close together....I'm not real sure!

But throwing 500 pool players with that many fans into a building with no place to hide makes for some very entertaining banter leading to some magnificent games......I don't know if that atmosphere will ever be re-created at the Horseshoe!!

Good topic. What a waste. Playing only card games now? Oh, Jesus almighty...:frown:
Not sure if he was ever the best pool player in Russia, or was he? Stepanov and Chinakov might be even stronger, they certainly look far more disciplined.

Stalev was a far better player, especially for the money. Stepanov is an excellent tournament player though.

I wish I had a video of his best (according to himself) tournament when he beat Johnny Archer in the finals of George Joblon Memorial (2002). He ran out the set if I'm not wrong. One of his Russian mates was recording it with his camcorder, and later he refused to give the tape for free to anyone including Stalev. Only after years passed I've heard he finally gave up. But I wish there was another source of being able to watch that epic runout.

The Stalev vs Charlie Williams 9ball from 2001 Derby City is a real good video. They both shoot over .900 accu-stats. The race to 7 is too short though.

Yes I highly recommend that video, the race to 7 was indeed way too short :( Awesome video!!

A few years ago at the US Open he was at the pool hall gambling a little bit. He was playing online poker while sitting around and then seemed in a hurry to get back to it while he was playing decent sized sets. It was kind of funny. He is a great player for sure. One of my favorites to watch.

I saw him that year as well, he was walking around with his laptop playing as many tables as he could fit on the screen haha.

Definitely one of my favorite players to watch as well...

Someone knows if he is a good poker player? He had some good earning in some tounament he played in?

I believe you are right Black-Balled. I remember the commentators talking about it on an Accu-Stats tape. It's like neoprene or something. Kind of like Earl's tennis racket grip handle he was using at one time.
