What have people been flat out wrong about?

I find the most error that is made with people that actually know the game and not bangers is the frozen ball rule. There are people where i play that swear if a ball is froze and you hit it the cue ball cannot hit the rail the ball is frozen to and be a legal hit.

For example a ball is froze and you just thin it and the cue hits the ball and the rail and comes back to where you shot it from and they call foul.

Another is a local rule in a pool around here that says only in one pocket if the ball is froze on the end rail down where you rack from, and you jack up hit a ball and draw back to that rail its a foul since the cue is froze to that rail you gotta hot another one:eek: what the hell is that??????

Well, that one and, a kiss shot, carom etc. I love bar rules.
I believe that theres been more fights started over bar rules than women on any given night.

Yep, how true.

I beat a guy out of a couple hundred once and he promised to pay me in a few days, I knew the guy so I let it pass and he ducked me for weeks, I finally spotted his car in a bar parking lot and went in to confront him so we end up playing eight ball in the bar and I have a bank on the eight ball in the corner, I knew it was a natural since his ball was near the pocket, if I missed a little it would go in off his ball which is exactly what happened so he starts spouting off that I didn't call the kiss, we end up in a bar fight and I never did get paid. (but I won the fight)

mantis99...Although it's not an "obscure" rule, there's no way a novice would likely know it. The rule is this: the cue tip is considered "alive", even on the edge. Touching any part of the tip, including the edge, constitutes a ball-in-hand foul. Your friend may have accidentally rolled the CB with his ferrule, and touched the tip, with the CB.

4. I had someone call a foul on a friend of mine for adjusting the cb position with his cue when he had BIH. He said that was the rules. I have never personally seen that rule, but thought it must have come from somewhere.

Had a guy tell me the other day that you should only worry about the current shot and not think about position for the next shot at all as it robs your concentration (we were playing 9-ball- I beat him;)).

I believe he was saying any adjustment with your cue was a foul, but my friend may have misunderstood.

I think the worst stuff is when people give advice on draw.
I've heard everything from "you have to snap your wrist" to "you have to grip it loose but tight" to "you have to pull the cue back" to "you have to jack up a little".

I saw an instructional video recently (I found it online... I think it came with some meucci products) where megan minerich (now smith?) tells you there are 3 different strokes... a stop stroke, a draw stroke, and a follow stroke. You might think "well, that's not so bad, you do frequently hit these shots with different speeds, kinda..." But she then went on to say you can e.g. use a follow stroke on a draw shot to get a different kind of draw. I know I'm gonna sound like a jerk here but... this was worse than useless, I think it would actually confuse a player and make it harder for them to learn. The heck of it is, she's an actual wpba pro and I'm sure she can play.

I find a lot of people are dead wrong about the difficulty of banks. They will swear a table length bank is better than a 60 degree cut, usually because they're scared of the cut. Sometimes because they're in love with a banks and always remember the banks they made while forgetting the thousands they missed.

I cannot count how many people who cannot play because they "need some more alcohol to get in stroke".

Just imagine how good Tiger Woods would be if they just let him get smashed before a big event!

The #1 misconception I run into:

For whatever reason, most bangers believe that ball in hand is ALWAYS in the kitchen.

Drives. Me. Bananas.

When Cindy & I play, we still play "kitchen" rules...like they were in the 60's. Sure, we know today's "ball in hand" eliminates the defensive strategy of a purposerful scratch...but when we're just out there doing our recreational banging, only playing each other on a bar box? No harm, no foul...

My all time favorite which I've heard more than one person say is "a math whiz has an advantage in pool because it's all about geometry"

after giving wrong advice while missing every other ball there is always the classic "I USED to be a really good player"..

Ah yes the old "wrist snap" advice, lets not forget it is usually followed up with "follow through". Well that's it and you'll be a drawing fool. Well, fool maybe because you still can't draw your rock! LOL

Ball in hand behind the kitchen, 8-ball goes in on the break wins the game, and you only get a choice of color if two different balls (stripe/solid) goes in on the break were the normal house rules that I remembered before joining a league using BCA rules.

1. The longer you "follow through" the more stuff you can put on the cue ball.

2. The "snapback" draw.

3. I paid my way through college playing pool.

4. My dominent eye is weak.

5. I need a new cue to play better.

6. I was in a crowd of players when this old timer said: "you need a butt heavy cue to draw the cueball".

Back in the day; if u wanted to learn how to shoot pool all u had to do was listen to the guys who became a font of knowledge when a woman was playing.

bobby, I musta heard that a thousand times.

"yeah it's really just geometry and angles and stuff. You can figure out where the ball will go and stuff"

me: "well, it's true there are angles but..."

them: "so that's it, you just gotta know the angles and you can beat anyone!"

me: "..."
