What in the hell is this type of wood?!?!?

Stained or stabilized maple.
I used to work a lot with staining maple veneers.
I think it's just curly maple with a two tone water based dye-stain effect. The curly maple has a lot of end grain exposed which absorbs more stain. On this cue, to me it looks like he went over it first with a smoke or fumed color first coat, followed by amber or cherry-amber second coat. If the coats are done quickly and lightly, the open end grain in the curly maple absorbs the first color which appears darker, then is washed off the tighter grain and colored by the second color which appears lighter. Similar effect can be achieved by lightly staining the wood dark, then sanding it after dry, and restaining it light. The sandpaper won't cut through the deeper color penetration of the end grain but will sand off the shallower dye, leaving a two tone effect.
That being said, I prefer a light one color stain on curly maple. The figure in the wood shows nicely with a light water based dye-stain.

The wood is maple with an ebony stain sanded back until it got a blackish grey look, the cue has a purple/maroon leather wrap to match the purpleheart, the guy who ordered it wanted a darker cue. I happen to know a bit about this cue.

What I really like about this cue is the "layered" look, where the inlays cut through one side of the rings. Takes a relatively simple design and adds a lot of dimension and interest to it.
I bet the cue would look great in person. I don't see how the flatness of a photo and screen doesn't do justice to a cue like this.
