What is "POOL"?

"POOL" is one of the hundreds of incidental things a human being can do while he is fully engrossed on his smart-phone.

The Great Conundrum

Pool is the Great Conundrum!

How can I manage to get this round ball in that small hole and do it again and again!

Clearly the answer of the Universe!

A guy called me last night to go play pool. I told him I would play billiards on the new table at Dog's.

So, we met and I showed him the rules for 3 cushion and we started banging the balls around.

I hadn't played billiards for about 20 years, so I was rusty to say the least, but was trying to show and tell my friend what I was trying to do and why, so he could learn and experiment with some shots himself. It's an easy game but hard as hell, as you pocketless players understand.

So, I'm shooting a shot and off it goes. The cool part about billiards is it takes sometimes 5 or 6 seconds for a shot to finish before you know if it was a score or not. I look up and he's not watching but on his phone. sigh

After this happened about 5 times in a row, I decided to quit.

He invites me out to play and then he's on his phone most of the time.

I did score a run of 2, though. Not bad after having not played for so long. The table is a 10 footer with Simonis, I believe, and is heated but didn't run fast at all, so not sure of what the problem is with it. Anyway, it was a fun night in spite of being ignored.

...and they miss my greatest shots!:thumbup::grin-square:

Me and the guy I am teaching/playing with have a lot of responsibilities and are both "on call". We both end up having to look at our phones a lot.

If we played with anybody else it would be very irritating I am sure. So I make sure to minimize it if I play with somebody else.

It's nice to not have to worry about it while playing each other though. It is a mutual understanding.

That is the only time I may not offer information about an incomplete shot during league. If my opponent cant take his eyes off of his phone long enough to pay attention I am not about to offer it up. If he asks I will answer honestly though.
Just last Sunday we had a sub on our team for league. This guy is notorious for not putting his phone down. Each player his 1 ball left and the 8. Our subs turn starts with BIH because his opponent scratched. He then proceeds to pocket his opponents ball for a foul and give his opponent BIH on the 8. Apparently his phone doesnt keep track of the game for him.

The other night a league player lectured me about how the other players have no pool etiquette. He plays with a headset on and spends most of his sitting time on his phone. I didn't point that out to him 'cause I'm too polite.:p

Hang up and play, dammit!

Pool is an activity like shooting a rifle. It immerses you in a world of target selection, aiming, and executing the selected shot for as long as you care to partake. Like most leisurely activities, it offers a temporary escape from the rigors of everyday life.

Pool is an art, a science, a diversion, and, for the select few, an obsession.

The cell phone is one of the most obnoxious devices ever created. It shows how fk'd up the human mind is with some people. The loud asinine ring, the beeping. I have guys in our clubhouse stop the game to answer and chat. I broke my cue sat down. Told the
opponent I'm tired. I have another guy that takes a business order while we're playing... I quit on him also. FUK the cell phone. To hell with it.

As long as you're playing alone. If i play someone and they so much as even look at their fkn phone i'm gone. If one can't play pool for a couple hours without getting on their phone don't play at all.
