Wondering what is the best length for pro taper? I have a 10 inch or so taper now and if I were to get it pull further back, how far should I go? Thanks for your expert opinions.

?

Why do you think it needs pulled back more than that?

The best taper is the one that works for you. Nobody is going to be able to make up your own mind for you, or create some magical shortcut that lets you decided what you like. You will have to play with different cues until you can form your own opinion. Anyone telling you otherwise is probably trying to sell you something.

I got a can't miss taper.
Why is a shaft with NO taper the first 12-15 inches called pro-TAPER nowadays?

Would a 2-3 thou of taper per inch be that bothersome to shooters nowadays?
It makes the shaft more pointable to me.

Yea I have tried several cues and I prefer ones with longer taper since I have a long stroke. I was only wondering how far I can pull the taper back before I compromise the integridy of the shaft.

Would it depend on the diameter of the shaft at the tip? If it was 13.5 the shaft would still be pretty thick 15" back but if the tip was 11mm it would seem to me to be a different story.

i just hand sand the shaft with 220 until i get it where i want it

That's exactly what I did to a junk shaft yesterday but not quite by hand. I have a crutch tip drill set up for putting on tips and spun the shaft to "turn" it down from 13mm to 12mm. I used a 1" wide block of wood so my finger tips wouldn't exert uneven pressure on the sandpaper and get high/low spots. I did a pretty good job and it was fun! I ended up with more of a conical taper than I wanted so I want to work on that.

IMO the "Pro Taper" straight back for 10 - 12 inches plays like a wet noodle. Moochie style.

Mine increases by 25 thou in the first 12 inches.

Careful you might get attacked for that statement.

pro taper: (noun) The guy who you pay to make the joints between your pieces of drywall look like they line up.
