I have a very nice vintage 29 1/2 inch Palmer shaft ( spare) - need to take it down 1 1/2 inches as per my shooting preference ( cue butt a little too long at 30 inches). I suspect cutting the existing ferrule off and replacing tip and ferrule would be much easier than trying to do this task from the joint end of the shaft. The shaft has a long, long pro taper, so after ferrule removal and replacement, I do not need any additional shaft tapering.

A cut about 1/4 inch below existing ferrule would take the 1 1/2 inches off the shaft including existing tip. Some questions: 1. Can the existing ivory ferrule be saved after removal and reattached to the shorter shaft? 2. if not, should the new ferrule ( non- ivory) be screwed and glued - or is that not necessary?

Thank You!

Cut off the ferrule 1/4 below it .
Heat up the wood below the ferrule and remove the ferrule .
Install on the shortened shaft. Examine the ferrule if it's capped .

If you cut the shaft off behind the ferrule, the ferrule may no longer be large enough. Check with calipers to see if the ferrule will match up with the wood.

If the ferrule was too large that would be an issue unless you wanted it smaller. God made sand paper for everything else.

Yes to both questions. Heating could cause the ivory ferrule to crack, so after cutting it off just drill it out and tap it. You may have to take a little off the ferrule or shaft to match them back up. If resale is any consideration to you then I would say leave that shaft alone and make another shaft.
