A friend Beat a guy out of over 3700.00 1 night. paid him 2500.00 and promised to pay him the next day. the next day he comes in and tells him, i have your money but if i pay it all to you i won't have enough to gamble tonight. so the other guy says said ok. forget last night's balance. we play again. he beat him again for 3000.00 this time. he only has 2200.00 in his pocket. promises to pay him the next day. next day same conversation takes place. he forgives the balance from last night and they play again that night. well this went on for over a week and at the end of the week he am up 15,000.00. with what he stiffed ken for ken would have been up about 3-5,000 more. Ken figure's that a large bird in the hand is bettter that any small bird in the oven. if he had not forgiven him the debt after the 1st day he would have never played ken again. so i feel that the right thing was done. i know alot of people on here won't believe it, but it is a true story. just never happened to me, happened to a friend named Kenny. what action would you have taken under these same set of circumstances?.................mike

While i dont have a good story like cueball,

a few months back, i was playing a guy i know, and is kinda a shady person when it comes to shooting pool, cuz he tends to sandbag or play till he gets things in his favor.

Well we start out playing, and he is giving me the 8ball, and i didnt ask for it. simple race to 5 for 10$ , and i win, on the hill. So then he said, well lets double it, same thing, i was like ok. And i win 5-1.

So then we play the next set same thing, well i am up 1-0 and in the middle of the rack, and he says, oh no more wild 8, and i should of said something, but didnt, and ended up beating him 5-2.

Well he is down 60, and i said look, i dont want to play anymore, and he makes this big fuss how i cant leave till he says so. So i looked at him and was like why? dont u have any money? So relentlessly i play another set, and win that one too.

And then finally he is down 100$ and i am like look i am not playing anymore, so i want my money. And he starts *****ing about how i cant leave till he wants to quit, and i was like **** that, i can leave whenever the **** i want, ITS MY MONEY AND I CAN LEAVE WHENEVER I FEEL LIKE IT.

So this guy being a NIT as he is, gets a couple guys i know on his side and thier all saying i cant leave till he says so. So me being a smart ass, was like, so when this place closes in 30mins, and he is still down money, are we suppose to drive to a 24hr pool hall to continue playing till he feels like he wants to quit. Needless to say they went quiet. And i looked at the guy, who is like half my size, and was like KEEP YOUR ****ING MONEY, I WONT EVER PLAY YOU AGAIN!!

And i havent, and anytime he does play someone for money, i always bring attention to the other guy that he probably doesnt have anymoney lol.

Doesn't matter really. Whether its 25 bucks or over a grand you still get pissed. You learn to post up front so it doesn't happen again, or set a limit where you pay to keep losses at a minimum. I've been stiffed for a lot more other than pool games. I learned, its in the past, so I never cry about spilled milk anymore. Cover your bases, believe me some will fire air barrels. That is just the way pool is, not to mention life in general. You will get stiffed at some point when you gamble.

Personally I have taken their cue (I use to have a lot of them) (I wish I still had some) work out a payment by a certain date, or knock their action, or write it off. You talk first then decide. It depends on the amount then you personally decide the action you want to take. No more answers here.

365 and I saw it coming. Justin was his name and I had previously won his cue, his portable cd player (this was in the 80's and that was a nice pick up), and most everything else he won when he couldn't pay me in cash.

Played him again, hoping to get his old beater car instead he just bailed and moved out of the state. No surprise and lets be honest here all I was really out was the table time.

i know if i ever win anything substantial say $2,000.00 and he only had $1,000.00 i would say that's fine...that is Alot of money to me so i would be happy with it...pretty good pay for less than a days work that is really fun ...

how frequent does it happen, that people dont pay at all?

im not from the US, and honestly, after a bad adventure of playing for money in a barr in brussels vs some chinese or japanese guy. (he was from the mafia.. and scared the freaking hell out of me). I just got this image (probably from looking to much movies) where if u win vs the local hero, ull probably will get into a fight with all the local players.

does this happen alot that people dont pay at all? or get into a fight if u win?
(maybe a rate in %?)

I played a guy $40.00 a game one night and we played almost all night. I got up $480.00 and he quit. He said he didn't have it and that we'd have to go get it. Needless to say, I never saw any of it. I take satisfaction in knowing that he's a bum and that's good enough for me. Everytime I see him, he's trying to borrow money off someone.

I drove 30 miles to get a load of mulch once and I swear to god he was in the office trying to borrow money from the guy running the cash register.

I knew he was shady before I played him, but he backed a guy to play me right before we played for $100.00 and I won and he paid me. So I figured he had the cash. Maybe he did, but I didn't see any of it.

$8000.

I was about 17 and the other guy maybe 19. We used to play all the time, the main game in that room being 2, 5, 10, 15. (I'm not sure of the official name of that game, but each of those balls are worth a "weigh" and whoever has the highest sum of all the points made is worth another "weigh" for 5 total weighs). We normally played for $5 per weigh in the room. But this guy had money, as did I, and we would often play for $20 per weigh. Well, this day, he wanted to play for 100/weigh. I said fine, and I knew it was on the wire. I get up a couple of thousand, and we switch to 200, then 500, finally 1000 per weigh. I end up winning 8000 before he quits. We go to pay the time (I pay it) and he says to me "Obviously I can't pay this all". I said "No, kidding. Just give me $1000 and we'll call it even". He said fine. He gave me 100 right there and said he'd pay me the rest later. He NEVER came in the pool room again. In fact, he totally gave up pool after that, and he had been playing for at least 5 years at that point.

I never got mad, but that was my first significant lesson in the need to post money. When I told other more experienced gamblers what happened, they told me I was lucky to get the $100.

not pool related. When I first went into the plumbing biz for myself, a guy called the shop pissin and moanin his plumber walked out on him and he needs someone to finish a new house for him so they can go to settlement. I knew it sounded shady, but I needed the work. So I finish the house the NEXT day!.....trying to do the guy a solid, and get a rep as a nice guy. I drop the bill off ($700) time and material, and he cut me a bad check! This guy was a mortgage broker!!.....So my wife takes the check (she worked at the bank) and goes to the guys office while I'm out on a call. Next thing I know she has CASH!....she went to the Sheriffs office and one of them (a big giant guy) was nice enough to escort her down there to collect, probably good for the other guy, she can get MEAN about $$$.:) She said the guy was trying to write ANOTHER check when the deputy said CASH ONLY!. Am I the only one who's wife does thier collecting for them?:)...........Gerry

Man I will gladly post up to your wife if we play...she ain't much bigger than me...and I know how us short folx can be a bit high strung and have a temper ;)

Great meeting you both though.

But I was stiffed out of 80 bucks once as a teenager. I was around 15, playing a guy 5 bucks a game 8 ball. The guy totally did not have it he claimed and proceded to walk out without paying me a dime. My uncles were in the pool room at the time...TWO BIG OLE BOYS. They met him out in the parking lot and beat the crap outta him on the hood of his camaro. Took his wallet...brought it to me...he had 30 bucks it turned out. I took the cash and gave it back to them. They then threw his wallet back to him in the parking lot and I never saw the guy again.

Years ago during a road session out west I played some bar pool one afternoon that turned into a bad night. I beat the first guy outta $55 at $5 a game 9-Ball/6-Ball. His friend the whole time was clocking me and when player A went empty he jumped up and asked to play for $20. After an hour or so he went on tilt and told me he wouldnt pay for the last game...I laughed and told him "no problem, I dont wanna close the place...I just wanna play".

He pulled a 2" .357MAG and asked me if I thought I was funny...of course I said yes. We exchanged some not so nice words and when the smoke cleared I hadda nice little whole in my right side of my stomach...the bastard shot me!!! Lucky for me the bullet didnt hit any vital organs and I recovered nicely. I have plans of returning to that bar someday...kinda like the headless horseman.

So the guy points a gun at you, a .357 MAGNUM to be exact, asks you if you think you are funny. Obviousy the thought that there are some lunatics out there who would blow your brains out for being sarcastic, never crossed your mind, and instead of saying what he wants, which would be "no", you say "yes", staring down the barrel of a gun. You are a ****ing idiot ROFL!

Danny Petralba, 1996 or so: $1800

Paid me $160 which barely covered time that night, promised to pay me every time he sees me. I am not worried about it, I didn't lose any money, it was a good game and I enjoyed the session. Would I like to get paid? Sure, the money would be nice. Why haven't I done anything to get paid? Because I have told everyone that asks me about gambling not to play him, and I talk to a LOT of people. Him not paying me cost him a lot more than he thinks.

I'm sure you judge me based on your worldly knowledge <laughing>. At that point, no matter what I said to that guy he was taking action...there was no right answer. Those who know me on here will attest that my lack of smarts is overshadowed by my lack of fear...if your gonna be dumb you better be tough. As far as your concerned Cuetechasaurus...to know me is to blow me, HAHAHAHAHA

Well I wish I could be Dirty Harry Cool with some guy on the tilt waving a gun around, but I'd more likely shite my pants:eek:

Did he get arrested?

I once beat a guy who got his money from a questionable business he seemed to be in enaged in for a little over $300. He said he had to go to an ATM machine. This guy was big and bad and while he was going to the ATM machine, i found out he had stiffed a guy for a similar amount a few days before. After 10 minutes, i knew he was gone of course but still i waited maybe another hour after which i wrote the money off.

3 or 4 days later he comes back to the room, apologizes, pays me and says "let's play again". The other guy he stiffed hasnt been paid to this day and they saw each other on a regular basis. Not really sure why he got stiffed and i got paid.

For me it has been VERY rare. Less than 1%.

But I know other guys who stiff each other all the time and get stiffed by strangers.

Fact is, people who dream about beating up on other people somehow find themselves in the right place at the right time to find people to beat up on and who in return sometimes beat up on them. Same is true of those who would stiff others. They often find people trying to stiff them.

Now some here were just unlucky or naive to find trouble. I simply put the bets up up front, and if a guy doesn't seem comfortable with that, then it will be my last game.

Biggesr stiff in pool was about 300, but I was backing my buddy and wasn't there to ensure cash up :(
