What is up with the 8 Ball rules these days?
I thought with all the leagues, BCA. APPA, APA and so on that 8 ball would have some sort of standard by now. I have been playing a lot of bar tournaments in Merced County and found out they are playing by these rules.
They call it "Straight 8 Rules".
You are what you make on the brake in less you make both. Then you get a choice.
You have to call every thing.
The 8 has to go clean. You can’t call it off another ball.
If you don't contact your ball, so what- no penalty.
No defense. They play all offence. You are supposed to go for every thing and if you play safe or defensive in any way you are looked down upon and considered scum of the earth. They call it coyote pool.
How Gay!!! No wonder pool is going down hill. I love this sport and I devoted my whole life to it.
Does any one else out there have to play 8 ball like this? Or is it just this sucky town?

I think its just that sucky town!!

Here we play:

Open on the break.
BIH in the Kitchen on the break.
BIH anywhere after the break.
Call shot.
Gotta hit a rail or pockt a ball.
Defense ok.

:)

There needs to be a world standardized set of rules that the world actually agrees upon. I play with BCA rules and find them to be the fairest IMHO.

I can understand how you feel about the leagues and their nutty rules. I tried CPA and couldn't stand the slop shots counting or the eight on the break as a win.

We have the same stupidity around here. I lost a game once because, the eight was nearly frozen to the long rail, and I cut it down table into the corner pocket. The eight bumped the rail a couple of times on the way down and I didn't call it off the rail. What kinda crap is that!?

"Bar Rules" plain and simple....designed to give the drunkards a chance.

This kind of thing has no place in serious pool. You call the pocket and if it goes in you move on to the next shot.

It is like that in Modesto, ca which is just 45 miles North of Merced. I played on the Modesto League for about 10 years now. They play BCA and the leagues are so strong that all the bars play by the BCA or APA rules. The pool halls in Merced which there are two, play BCA but most of the players here in Merced play 9 ball or 10 ball. * ball is just not that popular among the top players here. The way they play 8 ball in the bars and on the Merced Bar League I can see why.

8 ball is a fantastic game that gets little or no respect. When played at a high level it's really a beautiful thing to watch.

I had a guy in a bar try that stunt on me one time. When it was clear that I couldn't talk any sense into him, I asked him what he wanted to bet. I turned his dumb rules against him, knowing he had no chance with them. First time he hit the angled part of the pocket, I called it on him. That's part of the rail, and he didn't call a bank shot. He quickly learned how stupid his rules where when I cleaned his clock with them.:D

I totally agree with you about the nonsense of the rules. It's one of my biggest pet peeves. And, it is one of the things holding back pool from being taken serious by the masses.

Every where you go, the rules are different. I can't think of any game besides pool that is like that. Every one that starts a new league thinks they have to change the rules to brand their league as different, and it's killing pool. Why should any outside source take the game seriously when the main insiders can't even agree on what the rules are supposed to be??

Good, That is what the dumb *ss gets. I hope you took some of his money.
It always stings a little bit more that way and also it helps them remember how dumb they were.

He would only bet 5 a game, but I took 20 off him real quick. I started hanging out at that bar, and that was the last time I ever saw him try and use those rules, so he learned something.;)

Remember it seems only 8 ball is that way. Straight pool, one pocket, 9 ball, 10 ball and so on all have close to the same rules no matter where you go. It is just 8 ball that is all jacked up. I think it is because it is the most common game in the bar and the drunks can't remember how to play and start making up sh*t on there own. Some how some of the crap they make up sticks.

Cool, Cool!!
It is good to see at least someone out here is making a difference. All us pool players need to start hitting the bars and getting these rules back in line. Maybe then pool will grow and be recognized for the wonderful sport that it is.

What the hell is that supposed to mean .... breeder????

Think you are a little bit asshole with that comment ....

Cleanup you act ... it's assholes like you that have kids committing suicide.

You should not be playing pool! The last thing I want is to be playing pool with you so you could stare at my ass while I am trying to shoot! If you are offended by my comment, Go cry to your boyfriend!!!

Also, I hate to see any one take their life, but that might just be an option instead of spreading AIDS. How many lives have been lost due to that?

I always find it funny when gay people repeatedly call others "assholes"...

That's your thing, not mine. :)

This might be the most ignorant post I've ever seen here...SO, straight people don't spread AIDS anymore? Whew, what a relief!

(I'm partyin' tonight)

Ask them to show you where the "Straight 8" rules are. Probably wouldn't do any good, though. I never even heard of this until maybe ten years ago or less.
This is one of the reasons I never play 8 ball.
By the way, using the term "gay" to mean something you dislike or don't agree with has been considered juvenile for twenty years.
