What is your favorite case, and why?

I see many discussion about cues, but few about cue cases. I am contemplating the purchase, or ordering of a new leather case in the next 3 months, and need to do some more research.

I have read many praises about a few brands of cases, or cases from different case makers.

But am in a quandary on what to purchase, configeration, and what options to get.

My first tough decision is what configuration to purchase?

2 x 4, or 3 x 6 ? Pros, cons, and why you choose a 2 x 4 over a 3 x 6 or visa versa.

I know I think I want leather?

I am not sure if I want a cases with protective tubes like a Whitten, Talisman, or Murnak. But am also considering a divider model like a Ron Thomas, or Justis Pro -Lite because of weight of tubes?

Not sure how import big roomy pockets are as I am not a big time junk collector.

Also I am wondering if a Top Carry Strap, or Handle is a useful option. Or back pack straps like the Talisman, and Murnak have is a practical strap setup to have?

In looking at you list of cue cases possibilities Dan Whitten, Ron Thomas, Talisman, Jack Justis, and Jim Murnak.

Only Justis, Whitten, and Murnak offer a 3 x 6 cue cases, but all on your list offer a 2 x 4 cue cases.

If you are hard on equipment, and your current case gets abused I would only look at the Justis, or Murnak as they offer a more sturdy heavier leather.

Whitten use a grade of chromed tanned furniture leatherfor his cases that will give you many years of service if you are not an abusive cue cases user. Whitten cases are very clean looking.

Storage space is always nice to have, as is the ability to carry 3 Butts, & 6 Shafts verses 2 butt, & 4 Shafts.

Can you pack an extra 2.5 Pounds, as that is about the difference in most loaded 3 x 6’s verses 2 x 4’s. Besides you can travel lighter by not filling you 3 x 6 to full capacity if you wish.

I am personally in the same boat as you wanting a new cue case, and looking at other players cue cases seriously.

I am leaning toward a Hybrid Murnak.

Talisman has a 3/5, good for 2 butts, 4 shafts. I use the center one for my Stretch System bridge. ;)

Also, nice heavy leather.

When I came back to pool recently, I had my old but very fine Fellini case for my Josswest, a 1X2 with no pockets. First I needed to be able to carry a jump/break, and I bought a couple Guiseppe cases, including a black gator 3X5 which for $100 is a SMOKIN' deal. I longed for leather though and before long I bought a Murnak Standard 2X4 in black with brown top and pocket accents. I paid $365 on Ebay, NIB. It's a truly beautiful case and many players comment favorably on it. I use both the top handle and the straps at different times. Mainly the top handle but I like the options.

The 2X4 holds my playing cue and my break cue, and it's my every day carry. It weighs enough so that I don't really want a 3X5 , at least by Murnak. I have the Guiseppe and a J&J 3X5 if I want to bring extra cues that day. Now here are my slight criticisms of the Murnak 2X4. While the leather is gorgeous and it's built for stout, I do see room for improvement. The case won't stand up by itself. I have to lean it against something when loading and digging out a cue. Even though my playing cue is a 59" cue, I either have to use the butt screw to snag the shaft or turn the case almost upside down to retrieve a shaft. When it was new I dumped the contents out on the floor and dinged a cue. So, I can't put my cue and my break cue standing up in the case and move from table to table at a tournament. It's a slight inconvenience. If I had it to do over again I'd get a 3X5 that would stand up by itself with the top open, but one that wasn't too heavy.

Another consideration besides being able to grab each shaft and butt easily is length. My Murnak just barely holds my butt with the joint protector on it. I'm sure it's not a problem with 58" cues, but I'd check just to make sure.

Last but not least, I need a dealers case (not too expensive) for occasional use. Anyone have any suggestions ?

Hope this helped...Tom

Without hesitation I have to recommend Jack Justis cases. The workmanship is outstanding for the value and you can make it as unique as you like. Jack has some truly awesome looking cases available whenever he sets up a booth!

I now have both styles of his cases - the original tube case and the Pro Lite. The Pro Lite is fantastic and is quite a bit lighter than the tube style that he no longer makes. BUT!! It protects my Szamboti and Omen Grey Ghost very well, and I am very happy with it!! :)

I would buy a Murnak, I LOVE my 2x4. It is build solid and is just gorgeous, the dual straps is very handy.

i'm having Whitten build me a 1x7 right now for one of my cues-that should be interesting,

i carry a 2x4 allagator(real) whitten or a 1x2 ron thomas elephant(real) with no pouch, i use either of them depending where i'm going.

i had a 3x6 when i was in the pool room and flipping cues years ago, but i dont need a case like that anymore, i had one vinly case and that was the last one, i like leather, i have some vinly cases for storage but thats it.

Eric after looking at your cue case pictures you posted that is a very nice setup you have there.

Is it a custom cue case, or stock cue case?

Also about what is the approximate cost of such a case?

Right now a 2x4 would be ideal, but usually I have 2 or 3 cues, so for me I like a 3x7. I'm using a instroke right now, like everything but the weight. Lucky for me its not that far of a walk from the parking lot so no biggie. If I lived where I had to walk more than about 4 or 5 blocks I'd get something lighter.

It is a "standard" model medium brown GL1900 by Jim Murnak, he does beautiful work. This case ran me 'bout $400 shipped to my door. Here is a link to his site, he has just added a few new models and they seem to be very nice.........took me about a month to get it. I doubt I will part with the case ever haha. He can do whatever you want I am sure.....can't say enough about how much I like the dual shoulder straps.

Dennis Swift Cases

You can not bet the value of a Dennis Swift Cue Case. A hand tooled 2x4 or 3x6 are all under $300. These are very well made cases. Dennis Swift is located in Ownesboro KY. Here is his number 270-486-3135.
