What Is Your Favorite Music For Playing Pool?

I like to listen to James Brown: The Payback, Bill Withers: Use Me Up and Charlie Terrell: Redneck gigolo. That gets me struting into a rythm round the table and really helps my game and gets me in stroke.

I really like Thunderstruck by AC/DC. I will take AC/DC anytime I want to get pumped-up. This sounds wussy, but I also like 'Love Will Never Do' by Janet Jackson... it has a rhythm and breathing-like sounds that instantly send me to The Zone when I hear the song. Really, I should listen to that song before every match I play.

What I like...

It really depends on what I am playing. We are lucky at UBC, there's one of those jukeboxes that has the dowloadable songs. You can pretty much hear anything you want.

When I am playing league, a few of us will pitch in 5 bucks each and go crazy on rap and r&b:

I prefer upbeat like TI (Get Loose, Choose You, Stand Up, ASAP), Trick Daddy (Back in the Day, 4 Eva), Mariah Carey (Shake it Off, We Belong Together, and some older stuff), Young Jeezy (Soul Survivor, And Then What), Chris Brown (Run It), Trina (Don't Trip, Here we Go), Bone Thugs and Harmony (anything and everything they have), 2 Pac (most all of his), Biggy (Juicy), Soul IV Real (Candyrain), Akon (can't remember names), Kanye West (Gold Digger and some new stuff I can't remember), Pharrell (Can I have it Like That), Dem Franchise Boys (Oh, I Think They Like Me), Scarface (Fuc Faces)...

When I am practicing, or playing for money (which is rare), I like older rock n roll or country:

AC/DC (Hells Bells), Lynyrd Skynrd [from my home town] (All I can do is write about it in a song, Sweet Home Alabama, and ALL of it), Rolling Stones (Angie), The Manhattens (Shining Star), Bob Segar (Main Street, Old Time Rock N Roll, Like a Rock), Rascal Flatts (ALL), Waylon Jennings (Mama Tried), Hank Jr. (ALL), George Jones (Don't Need your Rocking Chair), George Straight (ALL), GArth Brooks (ALL), Eddie Money (Take me Home Tonight), The Bengals (can't remember the names)...

Sometimes I get in the mood to mix the two; it really just all depends on my mood at the time.

The league players hate it when my Thursday nite team loads the juke box $$ and plays all head banging music

pretty much anything other than what pool halls normally blast.

btw, in ear-canal earsets are great for minimizing external noise. shure and etymotic make great ones for $99

Most of you probably won't even know this one.

I personally like Roy Buchanan. When Eric Clapton is asked who is the greatest guitar player of all times was, this is who he says. This is his idol. He is the ultimate in Electirc Blues.

At one point he was told by the record companies that they wanted him to make certain kinds of music and he up and quit recording music altogether. He would only play live shows for years. Then one day, Alligator Records told him they would pay him in advance and he could 100% free reign and record whatever the hell he wanted. So he agrred.

So if you are interested in hearing what Clapton is so impressed with, here are some album titles that you might consider by Roy Buchanan.

American Axe Live in 1974
Dancing On The Edge
When A Guitar Plays The Blues
Hot Wires
Deluxw Edition (Greatest Hits of Alligator Records recordings)

I have been away from competitive pool for a few years now, but after recently joining this forum, my blood is pumping to get back into the mix. Some of the posts have made me quite nostalgic and I was trying to recall some great times I have had playing billiards.

Some of my best experiences were when I was practicing with a good shooter that was as determined to win as I was and we pushed each other to shoot beyond ourselves. But, I also recall that music always played a big part in the whole experience for me.

Sometimes I liked the power of bands like AC/DC or the driving rhythms of Santana or the epic relaxation tunes from Pink Floyd or the refined smoothness of Coltrane. I just know that music can really add (or detract from the experience).

Let us know what music drives you on the table. Give us your Credence or your Eagles. Throw out your thrash bands. How about modern stuff, like Coldplay or Dave Mathews? How about the soundtrack to The Color of Money?

Also throw in some game-killers. Maybe Country music slows your game up too much. Maybe Barry Manilow sings you into a gentle coma.

And be specific... we want song titles and group names!

I will add mine after I have thought about it more.

I have weird taste in music <maybe the right word is obscure>. I like to hear Enigma, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet. Some days I wanna hear just the balls clicking...

Sounds like my kind of music. Thanks for the tip.

I like blues and rock when I'm playing.

Roy Buchanon was the greatest!!! I could play "Please Don't Turn Me Away" over and over. So sad that we lost him.....

I have a 6 hour MP3 of Bert Kinister whispering softly, "You control the cue ball, you control the cash!"

That reminds me of something I was wondering about a while ago. Do you think it's rude when your opponent plays all his matches with headphones on?

I'm not really sure how I feel about it, but I think it's a great way to shut out the static noise and focus on your game.

Music

When I had my high run of 61 in 14.1, I was listening to the Pretenders Greatest hits. So that is my favorite.

Sinatra was one I totally forgot to mention! I love him music...ever since i started hanging around Capone's Billiards in Springhill. The owner is Italian and from NY. He got me into it! Then, just the other day a friend from the pool hall (77 year old) was telling me about this book he's reading on Sinatra's life...it sounds great...

Oh wow.... wouldn't actually classify it as old school per se, but nice choices! Too bad you never find NWA in a jukebox.....lol

My vote - anything but country.

I am all over the map, depending on my mood:

'Damn Right I Got the Blues!' Buddy Guy..the whole thing
Anything by SRV
Blues, basically...love the stuff!

'I'd Love to Change the World' Alvin Lee & Ten Years After
'Green Grass & High Tides' Outlaws
'Mean Mistreater' 'Time Machine' Grand Funk Railroad
'Dixie Chicken' Lowell George & Little Feat
'Kat Food' Dixie Dregs
'Whipping Post' Duane Allman & The Allman Bros

The above is just a sampling...with the advent of internet jukeboxes, the sky's the limit!

Who doesn't like them both? They are both such unique artists. Their tone, and lyrics...priceless!

Wow, nice selections Lisa. It's nice to see another (real) Little Feat fan out there. I've been known to leave Dixie Chicken (and Time Loves a Hero) in the cars CD player for weeks on end ... Feats don't ever fail me ;)

I'll bet you're an Edgar Winter fan as well.

Dave
