I know in that bottom list of cuemakers, there is one that would say that 80 people in this pole don't know their a$$es from a polar bear.

I have said it since 1994 that the classic cue style is the most popular style and it's what people tend to ask for. The familty tree for that cue style is like a willow, where the family tree for the other style is like it's from West Virginia, it's a flag pole.

All the cnc in the world is no match for 20 MOP diamonds, and a few dots strategically placed in a cue.

Guitars are the same way, you could cnc the crap out of a guitar, but it will NEVER be a Les Paul or a Strat.

JV (----- Classiccues.. \m/ 00 \m/ like heavy metal, there is no substitute :)

Very well put.

I like this poll. Although I do appreciate the modern artworks, I still can't stray away from the classic designs.

So you like titlists.

i sure do like em. love em even. but i would far more like to have cue builder of today eather make a new full slpice or do a half splice. them old brunswick cues are getting harder and harder to find. id like to think at least just a few of em will stay one peace.

i love new built stuff based on tradition.
my dream is to get a black creek blank and have dickie do a real full splice titlist looking NOT SO SNEAKY CUE.

I thought this might a an interesting poll. Vote for your favorite style of cue. I am not pigeon holing any of these cuemakers to a certain category, so please don't flame me for that. When you are considering one of these categories, think about the makers I have listed and how some of their cues fit into that category. That will help you visualize the cues that would fit into each style.

I do know what category I'm betting on!
Hey Jamie,
Another interesting idea for a thread.
For myself it is very difficult to pick one catagory.
I've had cues from all of the choices.
I love my Szamboti's, yet I have fun pushing cuemakers to create super challanging designs also, which might be out of the box for them.
There are cuemakers that create cues made to order. Whether it be modern, traditional, or show cues. Just hard to catagorize all cuemakers by one definition. I think in todays market the cuemaker will have to adapt to what the customer's likes are, and make them a cue that fits them.
Best,
Ken Kerner

I agree with you Ken... it is hard to pick just one. My pick was for Modern Traditional. But if I could only own one cue, it would probably be the one in your avatar, and that would fall into the Show/Theme cues category. I appreciate cues from each of the categories. There is no wrong answer, only what matters to you personally.

See you in March!

All the Show Cues and Modern Artistic cues are gone from my collection.
It is safe to say that I tend to select cues from both the Ultra Traditional and Modern Traditional these days.
I guess I prefer just Traditional Cues (both Ultra and Modern).

Great Poll!
But I cannot pick between the two traditional choices!

+1 see you soon myron

Another great thread Jamie!

I picked the Modern Traditional by a slight edge over Ultra traditional. It is great to see each cue maker's interpretation of the classic elements.

Yes, my friend, like me you had to take the modern traditional.
At least the cue we both love that much, you know - your avatar shows us that you´ve got it right. :grin-square:

Eric"h" ----- will owe it one time

Ultra Orthodox Traditional looks best to me.

Wrapless Titlists float my boat.

I like a full splice with a nice Hoppe ring, like Blackcreek, Jerry -R-.

A cue that is made to perform instead of impress turns my prop.

Short or no ferrules, half joints, and wood that is known to play well, like straight grain maple, Bacote, rosewood, etc. are great. Chuck Starkey's wood pin players are awesome. A cue with four parts, are you kidding me? I'm in.

Lots of people, including me, don't care for rounded inlayed points. I take that a step further and don't care for any inlay with a rounded point and really think inlays are better left off. If a cue needs to be fancy, let the wood do the talking.

What impresses me is sharp points that have a defined end. Veneers should have NO glue lines, but sadly most do. The edges of the different veneers should be straight, not uneven like they are stripes on a highway. The miter should be seamless color to color, not color, glue line color. Look at Darrin Hills points these days. Nice. Or Tony Zinzola. Wow.

We don't need no stinkin' glue lines.

Also impressive is how the rings, ferrule, joint, etc are put together. When the parts are cut with super sharp tooling it creates a very business like look that tells me the parts that I can't see are also done with precision and skill.
Sugartree cues have this quality. Reports of how they play back this up.

A cuemaker that offers a low deflection shaft tells me they know that some players like that characteristic and pay attention to their cues performance, not just how many inlays they can cram into a butt sleeve.

Thats what I like.

Oldschool style (traditional).
And sometimes you just see a cue which is just calling and hollering for you :p
