What is your ideal league?

I am the new League Operator here in Vegas for the UPA, League of Champions and want to get people's opinions on their ideal league. I know everone wants more money and I will meet with my team captains before to assure they know team payouts at the end of the session so there is no confusion. I'm excited about this league and I think the national individual and team rankings is a great addition to the game at the amateur level. What are your ideas?

In house. No smoking. Good food. Alcohol. Heads up play. 5 people play 5 people 1or2 games. 5 play 5 means constant action, no waiting 1.5 hours to finally play your match. BCA plays handicap all year and then heads up in Vegas?!?! If handicapping is so important then why heads up in the big dance? Simple answer is it's easier for the people in charge. No disq. For going up. Spend all that money and get dq would put people off. Pool for most is for fun and fellowship not payouts. Playing league to make money? In Vegas? Learn to play cards and throw dice!!! Payouts just pay for your fees and maybe some beer. League is really for lower level players advancing their game. Great players don't get better playing people they can easily beat. Good luck. New leagues are tough to start but everyone is looking for something fresh. Make it different. My fav would be some type of skill pool. Banks, trick shots, 3 ball, beat the ghost, shooting drills. Big mix! Nobody else does this!!

a handicapping system that truly works and nobody would need or want to sandbag. a system that would really give a lower level player a true chance to beat a stronger player, and the system would not force teams to break up.

APA Masters!!! Hands Down, No Comparison, No Subsitute!, No B.S.!!! Heads Up Race to 7, No Handicaps, You Either Bring Your Game or, You Get Your A$$ Whooped!!!

Did I Make That Clear Enough.

I agree with the APA Masters format, but with these additions:

In-house (12 team minimum), no-smoking, first match must start on time (or team forfeits first match), cash payouts at sessions end (with additional payouts for winning playoffs), all rules strictly enforced (NO exceptions), the League Operator (or an authority figure representing the league) must be present during league play, and most importantly: A rule book that explicitly details all rules concerning league play (with NO gray areas).

IOW, a no bull-sh*t league!!!

In my ideal pool world....

My "ideal" league would be one where me, Shannon Daulton, John Schmidt, Fong Pang Chao, Earl Strickland, Grady Mathews, Bill Incardona, Allen Hopkins, Nick Varner, Oliver Ortmann and Buddy Hall were all fully sponsored and traveled the world playing in our own tournament where ever we went. Wait, not finished yet....AND that our wives would also be traveling with us and that all food, Diet Cokes and lodging would, naturally, be paid for by the deep pocketed sponsors, who also gave all of us healthy, 6 figure paychecks. AND that I just wouldn't end up being the rack boy! AND that ESPN covered all the goings-on. AND that this was so wildly successful that not only was a book and DVD deals made, but also, a full length movie presentation that would rival "The Hustler" and inject generations of new life-blood into pooldom, which would then grow to be more popular than the NFL, MLB, & NASCAR. Combined!

THAT would be ideal!

stbjr80, sorry to just bump in like that, but the voices in my head over-ruled good internet protocal!

Good luck on your upcoming league sir!

I m a bit far away-

But i must really say- the modus which was played at the WTC in Hannover.....that was just great and amazing, also for the crowd. It s long ago that i saw just a fanatic crowd like in the shoot-outs. This modus had something special. Was well choosen-and all the professionals did like it,too. I wish a league with this modus would be played here in germany, too.
And for the 14-1 lovers we can go back to the pure 14-1 team league, and the 14-1 single league........gettin nostaglic kicks atm ^^

Thanks for the input

Thanks to everyone who replied. The great thing in place about this league is once you reached a certain speed, you can't go back down. Wih the exception of an injury or something. They are forcing people to play to their full potential. Plus the speed inputs are not put in by the league operator, they are strictly put in by the UPA.

With the national rankings, it also gives you a chance to compete with everyone in the nation, which is nice to go on the UPA tour website and compare with everyone else. Everything is across the board. You know that a 6 in PA will be about the same as playing a 6 in NV.

I also dream of a full national tour playing against all those players with a 6 figure income. lol....

Thanks again for your inputs. Hope to see you in the UPA. Whether during the Pro or amateur events.

Years ago Strohs sponsored a pro bowling team in Det. It was quite a honor and a lot of pride to be on that team. A bowling facility was even built for them that had stadium style seating. The matches were televised. The team had the best players in the area and don't remember who they played but it was a popular show. I don't think they used handicaps. It really helped to make bowling popular in the area. People still talk about that team.

As you stated it would be nice to see pool have something like that.
