In your opinion, what makes a pool hall great, besides having outstanding equipment and tables?

tv? music? food?
or no tv? no loud music? no greasy food smell?

keep in mind, we're not talking about the ultimate "sports bar" but the ultimate pool hall.

I like good furniture. couches and love seats even.

Clean! Clean bathrooms, clean balls, clean tables. Good rates, this is dependent on the location. Obviously, it is more expensive in NYC then in some small rural area. I like a flat rate for regulars during non prime time playing. Soft music. Some TVs with the ball games on.

I think the varied personalities that come and go along with the houseman/woman can make or break a room.
I've seen beautiful rooms that have the feel of morgues due to the employees or owners!

In order: good tables, friendly cliental, nice owner, music not too loud, stuff that understands not to interrupt a shot, decent food, chip drinks, dark but clean, pro shop.

i think

people..poolplayers...it can have the best equipment , best food, etc...but if there isnt lots of people that are there to play pool....no good....

Good equipment, friendly staff, comfortable chairs, reasonably priced liquor and activities other than pool. Also interaction between players is very important. Where I grew up the pool hall was my 2nd home.

With my pool hall I'm also incorporating a lounge for sports, a full bar, buzz time games on the TVs, Texas Holdem tournaments and PPV fights. The goal is to provide an environment where you always have something to do. I want to give the people in my area a 2nd home where they can socialize with others, not just show up twice a week for tournaments.

Clean well stocked rest rooms

Clean place including floors

Clean Table Cloth

Clean Balls

Good lighting above the Pool tables

BTW if a Pool Room, or Pool Bar, or Sports Bar is a DIVE I WALK AWAY. Tell me the management or Owner don't care so why spend my money there,

A Great Pool Room...

Gold Crowns or Diamonds with Simonis cloth that are well set up and maintained. Predominantly 9 footers. Premium ball sets, with a ball polisher at the front counter. Excellent table lighting. Comfortable seating. Action. Tournament schedule. Open during the day and late night. Music kept at a relatively low volume. Non-smoking. It also helps if there is 3C and snooker available.

Something more than just a quiet mostly empty morgue of a pool hall playing sinatra era muzak or worse yet dead silent with a jukebox nobody plays.

Full bar, lots of regular people that are fun to be around, clean, good food and drinks at good prices not just microwave or fried stuff, good rates for top quality tables, good music at a decent volume plenty of tv's with a variety of stuff on. Poker, darts, lots of things to do so it's always full. On music that means a good mix, maybe varies depending on day of the week. Music and atmosphere is key, not TOO loud but not Muzak low either. Hopefully a place so nice with so much more than pool alone that it draws women I'd want to play with.

I really don't care as long as the tables are top-notch and well kept. Jukebox volume kept to a medium level is nice as well. I don't give a crap what my ass is sitting in, because I don't plan on sitting there for very long, unless I'm having a rough night.
