What pool event draws more players than any other?

Which single event has more players than any other? By players, I mean people who at some point play in a tournament, mini-tournament, ring-game, or gamble.

My guess is that it's the Derby City Classic. I wasn't there, but I'd guess there were about 1000 different people playing at some point during the event?

Are there any other events in Asia (or elsewhere) that bring more players (I'm not talking spectators)?

If anyone can rank the top 5 for instance, I'd be interested.

BCA Las Vegas - I think estimates were around 7,000 last year.

Some events have ceased, i.e., Glass City Open in Toledo, International Pool Tour multi-million-dollar tournaments, and BCA Open. However, each one of them did attract a wide variety of players when they were in full swing.

The American tournaments and high-profile events are dwindling, but here is my list.

1. Derby City Classic at Horseshoe Casino
2. Super Billiards Expo in Valley Forge
3. U.S. Open in Chesapeake Beach, Virginia
4. World Pool Championship (if it happens again)
5. $25,000-added Joss Tour event at Turning Stone Casino

The season finales of regional tours like Shannon Daulton's Southern Tour, Mike Janis' Viking Tour, and others which I cannot think of at the time of this writing also attract a fair number of players! :)

And there you have it! :p

No doubt, it's the BCA 8-ball championships in Las Vegas every May. Between five and ten thousand compete every year.

While Derby City is swarming with pool players, they aren't the only people at the hotel. At the BCA's, it almost feels like they are. At the Riviera, you can get onto an elevator and the ten people already on the elevator are all carrying cues. Now that's a deeply religious pool experience!

that was fast, JAM!
The BCA event completely slipped my mind. That does dwarf some of the others. And how could I forget the Super Billiard Expo?!? I think the amateur event has close to a 1000 people!

One has to wonder about the attendance at APA nationals in Vegas. They have a *lot* of teams that show up to that every year - some for just eight-ball, some for just nine-ball, and there's a bit of overlap. Plus the folks who are only going for the singles events, and the folks who're just going (not qualified in anything specific).

The APA singles event is in April. Their team event is in August. The team event draws about 4,000 people while their singles event is approximately 500-600 (not including spectators).

EDIT: Those are 8ball numbers. Including 9ball, you can probably add about 50% to both (not sure). They're also large events but I don't think the APA team event is as large as BCA.

Ah, I wasn't aware the singles/teams were different times of the year. I've never gone so I couldn't say how many folks usually show.

Hi Jude:)

The BCAPL 8-Ball National Championship at the Riviera last year was around 7500.

The year before the BCA sold off the league there were 9000 players at the Vegas May event. circa 2003

BCA Nationals in Vegas is the top dog of drawing players.
Also, our own BCA 8 Ball regional event in the Pacific Northwest draws around 1200 players every year!!! Not bad for our little area of the country.:)
The Western BCA 8 Ball Regionals is coming up!!! March 9th - 15th.
Its a GREAT tournament. I look forward to it every year!!!!!!:)
Its right on the oregon coast in Lincoln City,(1 1/2 hours from Portland)
