What router do You use?

My bearings finally got too bad in My Porter trim router. I need to get a new one. I went out, and called everywhere in town, and no one has them in stock anymore. I can order one though. In the process I ran across a bocsh pc trimmer at the depot. Wondering If anyone uses one of these, or can tell me if they are any good or not? Also If any good, what's the best way to mount It to a deluxe? Thanks guys, Greg

I use Dewalt trimmers. My mount makes them quick change, but now I can no longer find these routers available. DeWalt changed their style & the new ones will not fit my mount. They are loud, but powerful and fast at 30,000rpm. They don't bog much on heavy cuts.

Time to upgrade a little.

Just curious but did You use a model 310 Sheldon? I hear that it was a production laminate trimmer, but the 7310 (the one I have) replaced It in the retail market. The 310 being much better, but I use that bolt on the 7310 to mount It to My slide, and the 310 has the clamp mount design. Besides that I saw one one site where It said those were discontinued. Not sure If It's true just saw It on a site carrying It, so that may mean the site discontinued carrying, and not that they actually halted production.

I was right in the middle of turning shafts, started picking up some chatter, thought the bit was getting dull, so went a bought some more of them, and still the same thing, even with My usual speed settings that usually work great. after playing with the feed and spindle rates I couldn't find a sweet spot, so I started thinking the new bits may not be as sharp, as they were a different brand then I normally get, and didn't feel as sharp. I knew My bearings were on the way out, but It had been still working fine. That was yesterday, then today I get up slap a shaft between centers and run a pass off. It turned out smooth as usual, ran a couple more light passes, and started picking up more. I thought maybe that was due to the shaft getting smaller and pushing off more. Well at the end of one pass I heard noise that sounded like someone dropping a piece of rebar on the concrete, then It went away for a inch and came back right at the end of the pass. I turned the router off, spun the bit by hand and it was rough sounding. I then tore It apart & the armature had a nice hit in It, but It didn't seem to be the problem, and the bearings didn't seem to have enough play for It to hit the sides, It turned out to be the front bearing that was bad, so I put it back together, and I guess after cooling the bearings got a little smoother feeling, and they didn't seem to have any major slop, so I did something stupid just to see If the router was causing the chatter I was getting, and I ran a pass with It cooled down, again smooth cut until It got to the big end of the shaft then picked some up, ran another pass and it picked It up in about 3 places in the shaft, so seems like what's happening is the when the bearings heat up It gets worse. They have to be shot out, just surprising what little slop they have. If that front one didn't grind when It gets hot, It may have been hard to tell.

Anyway I think Dave mentioned they have a rubber housing for the bearings, and indeed Mine had a rubber housing for the back bearing, I didn't pull the front one though, as I had already realized it was the bad one.

I may try putting new bearings in It and using for something else, but I need to get a new one for tapering right now.

Sounds familiar. Old style Ryobi here, all metal body, 29,000. The newer models are plastic and not as good I think, and won't fit my mount either.

Was This one was discontinued Eric? If you painted It black, and change the switch housing on top, It would look just like the porter 7310. Looks like the same router to Me. The depot didn't have It either or I may have bought It. More money then the porter, but the mount looks the same, and wouldn't require any fabrication If so. Also curious how the dewalt compares to the porter? Thanks Greg

7301s here. The last one I got seems a little quieter, but it's probably just because the bearings and brushes aren't toast yet. :D

HSD variable speed, high frequency spindle. Expensive and damn well worth it.

Unique High Speed spindle Router setup. Accurate and really quiet :) The Porter Cable router is so noisy I cannot stand to be in the same room with it for very long. Also the Kress setup is real nice too, if you want to upgrade and save a penny or two.

For interests sake, how long does one of these laminate trimmers last for a busy cuemaker ? I only ask because after building a house I gave a mitre saw to a golf club maker friend, and it only took him about 2 years of cutting a few hundred shafts a month to make that thing howl (but it sure did stop fast :) ).

I have a Porter Cable router not lam trimmer on a home made bracket not pretty I might add to fit a 4 way tool post. And a 6 wing cutter I may as well get rid of I have to use for it now. PM For details. Sorry for not posting this in the right place.

No. This is the newer model that replaced the ones I use. I use part of the mount that came with them as my lathe mount. There's a lever that releases or lockes the router into place, so I can have several routers ready to go with different bits, and instead of going through the trouble of changing everything up, I simply swap routers in the same mount by pulling a lever. My routers are all still good, but getting noisy after years of use. Won't be long before I need to rethink the way I do things.

Joey, you buy that thing for me & i'll make it work :) Otherwise, i'm a hillbilly cuemaker & feel more comfortable sh!t rigging stuff!!!!! Expensive stuff makes me nervous. Cheap stuff I can abuse with cheap consequence ;)

I do most of my cutting on the tablesaw machine now but I was going thru a porter cable about every year previous to the saw machine. I now only use it for threading and occasionally roughing square stock to rounds. Chris.

Get your truck here.
We'll rob Gina's place. Perske motors on his machines.

I can't be spending any major cash right now so close to holidays, and don't have time to fabricate another mount, so I guess I'm even gonna try the dewalt or another porter for now since they will work with My current mount, and the only down time will be waiting for It to arrive. I am gonna need to upgrade, the screaming sounds I need to address with something quieter, but also I don't like the idea of that back bearing being housed in rubber, It may dampen It, I don't know but It just seems like a weak design, compared to a full on metal casting. The bottom bearing is encased in aluminum, but the top one is encased in plastic with a rubber grommet housing It.

I use a Makita laminate trimmer. I have three of them. The bearings do go occasionally but I just put another one on the lathe and send the bad one out to have the bearings replaced. Costs about $40.00.
