What size table?

Hi All,

New to the forum.....great resource.

The hall i play in has 9' tables. I'd like to get a home table but only have room for a 7' or 8'. I can't remember the last time i played on a table less than 9'. My question is for those that have 7' or 8' tables at home and wonder how does it affect your game when you go to the hall for match play, tournaments, etc.

If you goal is local tournament play..is having and practicing on a 7' or 8' a help or not?

Thanks for any feedback.

First and foremost welcome to the forum.

Secondly I think having ANY table in your home at all will help your game. The only two pool halls in my town have 8' tables with only a couple 9'. All the tournaments and money games in my area are played on 8' tables. Even when I travelled four hours to Dallas for a tournament it was 8' tables so it will make sense for me to set up the garage with an 8' table.

Having said that, it is always easier for me to go down a size rather than up. But at the same time if I constantly play on an 8' then switch to a 9' table I never really had trouble adjusting. But, going from a 7' bar box to 9' is a different story.

My home table is a small barbox. It's not even a full 7'x3 1/2'. Believe me, IT HELPS! You can play whenever you want to. You can practice shots without paying time, you can practice fundamentals that few will actually do in a pool room. You can stay in stroke.

It hasn't hurt my 9' game one bit. And I only play on a 9' once or twice a week for an hour or two. Unless I can get a game on one. IMHO, ANY table is better than no table.

I would love to have a table of ANY size at home.....if you can fit the 8 footer, I'd go that way - the used market is FULL of them....also, as John said, 8 to a 9 isn't that much of a leap.....if you can, find an 8 with a deep shelf and tight pockets, that should do the trick and make any transition fairly quick....

What do they play on most for local tournament play where you are?:)

thanks for all the quuick replies.

CocoboloCowboy: I am in Northern NJ and all the tournaments are on 9' tables. In fact, out of all the rooms i've been to in the NY/NJ area i've never seen anything but a 9' table.

Thanks again.

Buy the largest table that your room will accommodate. Jacking up because you are jambed up against a wall gets old, fast. Not to mention you hear the comlaints all night long from your pool playing buddies.

BTW...playing on a 7'er will bring your game up! There are tons of shots that come up on a bar table that will bring your big table game up. Off the top of my head, a 7'er can improve your banking, shots over balls, clusters, tight position shots, increased angles, shooting off rails, etc.

Everyone is different. I would say a lot of it depends on how many hours a week you play on a 9-footer. If you average anywhere over 12 hours a week, most will not have much trouble getting back on a nine from a 7 or 8. If you play less than 12 hours a week on a nine, it won't matter either way. You just can't get very good playing less than a dozen hours a week IMO.

I use to play about 50/50 nine to bar table. When I went out to gamble on 7's I stopped in a poolroom with 9-footers for an hour before I headed out to the bars with the 7-footers. Going the other way, from 7 to 9 it would take about 30 minutes to ge the eyes and stroke adjusted, but I played 8 to 20 (or more) hours a day back then. Johnnyt
