What size tool bit handle

I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't use a quick change toolpost....
Since getting one myself, I would never use anything else

I was not wanting to spend the $100.00 right now, but was wanting to use my 3/8 round boring bar. I have quite a bit invested and am trying to break the "what the hell it's just another $100.00" habit Also I was really wondering if I really needed it or if it was worth it after watching this. Do you ever find the QCTP gets in the way?

Is this what you are using? http://lmscnc.com/2478

Thanks

The youtube link isn't working for me.

The other link you posted is the same QCTP I have on my lathe. Buy you an extra couple of tool holders and you won't go back.

I edited the link. It's working now. Thank you for your reply.

I think that's the same quick change I have on my deluxe, I forget the guy on here that was making them.....
I ha e never found an instance where it gets in the way....
If you want to unload that post cheap, I'm your huckleberry :)

I really only use the right hand cutter, tip shaping guide and the cut off hiker on my small lathes, on the big one I have my router set up with KJ ring cutter on a quick change as well.
I would never ever go back to taig holders, and I had multiple holders set up to switch around as well.

What the hell, it's just another $100.00. Here I go again! Thanks for your input. (I think?)

I would never look back. The quick tool posts are so convenient. I have a set ups for each lathe then I bough an extra cross slide too mount my router so I could cut rings ext. Never have to waste time setting up and adjusting anything.

Dale,
I'm with Darcy on this one. I had looked at them for years and wasn't sure if spending ~$100 was really worth it. I inquired here and was told it was worthwhile. And it WAS!
Because you mount a different tool - boring bar, indexable (or not) cutting tool, tip shaping template, dial indicator, etc - in each holder, the correct tool heights are all pre-set and you can change tools in about 15 seconds - no shims needed. All you have to do is move your cross slide in or out and you're on to the next task.

Thanks for the Machining 101 tips...

But you can accomplish all that and more without using a QC.
Fine they are for production environments - if anyone is attempting
"production" on a cue lathe... well.

Dale(who is still saving up for that CNC with a programmable auto tool changer)

All my lathes have the same QC tool holders. All are set up so that all holders have the same centre hight.
So tools that I don't use very often, I can use on any machine.
Only advantage with what I have now is saving time in setting up tools.
This can be the difference on doing a 10 min job to a 15 or 20 min job.
For some people, half the fun in making things, is making and setting up the tools to make a part. Each to their own.
