What THREE things would you like to see your Pool Room Owner/Management Change.

My state (iowa) just went smoke free. Me personally? it dont bother me a bit and I am a smoker. I find the extra couple of min I take between racks helps clear my head. Three things to change? That would list out like this.

1: Matching ball sets (no slightly of sized balls that make it almost impossible to get a good rack)

2: Replace a couple of the Valley BB with one more GC (for a total of 5)

3: Put the same tournament blue 860 on the Diamond BB's that is on the 9ft pros (witch we have 6 of total)

All in all I am very lucky to have a 40+ table room close by but these 3 things would be nice.

As you say smoke free ... But yet smoke free is killing many pool rooms ... Maybe that is the desired effect to kill off the pool room and maybe the game. I only wish there could be a compromise to where there were designated area's for smoke free and smokers ... just my opinion... It seems like smokers and pool often go hand in hand ... Just as drinking and pool does for many ... It is the seedy side of the game that no one seems to like or want to admit ... but it is definatly a part of it ...

I understand that smokers have rights too...don't get me wrong, smokers are a very big part of the pool world.

But non-smokers need to voice their opinion too, there are a lot of really good players and several pros that do not smoke. I have done research on the affects of smoking bans and have found that yes, there is a business decline after a smoking bans, but over time that consumer void is filled.

The combination of smoking, drinking, and pool has become a very bad stereotype in the world of pool. Again no disrespect but it has hampered the game. If you play in tournament on a consistent basis you find that the majority play sober and mostdo not smoke during tournament play. It is becoming an intense game; a true sport... and smoking is being kind of left on the side by this "new breed" of players.

But don't get me wrong...there is no revolution going on... it would just be nice to see a few more places where we can go play and not have to take a shower afterwards to get that smoke grime out of your hair (another reason why smoke free nights don't work...that tar lingers!)

This is only true when the laws do not cover the entire State. If there is a close alternative, just over the county line, then yes, a lot of smokers will just go there. It is sad that they have no sense of loyalty. When they do not have a choice, they stay put and many pool owners, then see a growth in business as non-smokers start to come back to the rooms. I also known many hardcore smokers that later grew to prefer the atmosphere of the NS rooms. After all, does anyone really like breathing in other peoples smoke? Even smokers?

I do know that The Pool Room, in Duluth, remained non-smoking, even after the band in that county was lifted. They had attracted a large part of their clientele from other rooms, because they are non-smoking. They also are able to allow in the under 18 group, which by law in Georgia can not even enter the other smoking rooms.

wow, really?

because I thought there was a choice/compromise. In between racks, walk your *ss outside and smoke for 3 minutes.

I thought florida was one of the biggest states for pool, they have been smoke free for what, 5 or more years now.

give me a break.
Non smoking might work in Florida, but what about rooms in Ohio or anywhere where it gets cold in the winter. Do you really think it affects them the same as it does in Florida?

that would be the ideal way to work it, have a few voluntary non-smoking rooms, but it didn't.

non-smokers here in MN have not come out to support these businesses, even after they forced the smoking out (and with them, some of the smokers). this is why we are loosing some of the pool rooms in the area.

first, minneapolis put a city/county ban, but the rest of MN was able to smoke. This closed down the pool rooms there, but when the whole state did it last oct., the entire metro area is suffering.

there may be a reason...

I'd like to see everybody charged at the same rate. I frequent a pool hall nearby and there is a fairly large group of folks that are allowed to play free. They are never charged and have two tables that are basically for their use only. It just ticks me off to watch them play for hours and never have to pay a dime.

You didn't provide much info...
Maybe this "large group" are the "owners", or friends or relatives of the owners.

Also, would you have the same views if you were one of the "chosen ones"?

put in a nine footer and dont charge outrageous hourly rates for it. The place i usally play has all brunswick oversized 8's. Theyve had 9 footers in the past but charge like 15 and hour and only 5 an hour for the 8s. Since no one used the 9s they took them out. We need at least one 9 footer for 1 pocket games.

and turn down the jukebox.

and dont fire the hot waitresses, i dont care if theyre dumb as a rock. :) No matter how bad im shooting, staring at a hot waitress always makes me feel better. and hot girls bring in more guys to drink and lose money :)

two wrongs don't make a right...

I calmly packed up informed the man i would not be paying and left.

Isn't this the same as stealing?

In the pool room I hang out in, only a few changes.

1. New Balls
2. New tables
3. New carpet (the duct tape is dirty}
4. Waitresses with teeth.

The parking lot is just perfect.

I am pretty lucky in that most local rooms near me have good equipment and offer a good place to play.

The main room I play in has started adding things back to the room and
changing layout etc. It is going nicely.

There is always room for improvment but things are not bad right now.

a couple observations

1- hire help.. ones that are there to build the business. Started as
friends and family working. A change would help bring in customers.
Needs to be friendly and they need to want to be there. The staff needs to promote food and drink sales as well as entice customers to return.

2-make a designated smoling area ... its non-smoking but everyone just walks two feet out of the door and stands. Anyone coming or going has to run a gauntlet of smokers. It reminds me of people hanging outside a
convenience store.

3- add a special or two.. a happy hour .. something different to the menu even if its not permanent.

Again I am pretty lucky compared to some of the rooms I have read about on here and have seen. Tables are usually in good shape and theres plenty of them.

Ok my list is going to be a little different.

1. unlicenced area for minors
2. a library with computer, A/V equipment and resources and instructional and other pool related books.
3. Strippers..... lots of strippers and topless waitresses Just Kidding

Reason?

They are definetly not the owners or relatives but they may be "friends"if you use that term loosely. As to my being one of the chosen ones. You are so wrong, I pay my own way and have my whole life! I have earned all I have myself and am very proud to not need to accept handouts from others. That is what happens when you work for and earn your own way in the world. Perhaps it is you that is one of THE "chosen ones" as you like to call them.

People not going in pool rooms and playing is whats needed to keep things nice and get customers the things they expect. NO PLAYERS= NO EXTRAS.

High rents and utilities hurt the rooms to.

Its plain to see that the non -smoking has not brought the non-smokers that wouldn`t come in before to the rooms yet, at least not around here.

People need to go to the rooms first so they can have the money to get the best things.

And with the abuse some people do to the equipment, I know first hand why room owners sometime feel no one cares about anything why should he.

Signs mean nothing and if you say anything your a son of a b--ch

My pool room used to have a VIP room with 6 Gold Crowns. This VIP room has been closed about 1 year now. The GC's were relocated to the front room. Not as nice as the VIP room, but still nice. The rate to play is $6 before 6PM and $7 after 6PM. So if you show up at noon you can play as long as you want for $6. Great deal.

The GC's all have either 860 or 760 and they are cleaned daily and the balls are waxed daily.

What would I change? Not much really, this place is a great pool room.

1. New balls, while they are matched they are getting old

2. New carpet, not a big deal really.

3. Remove the Juke box. I know that it's a source of income but I get distracted listening to Rap.

This PH is in NY state, been smoke free about 4 years.

Paul Mon

1. Get rid of that damn jukebox (if you want music, bring your IPOD).

2. Keep up with the tables and balls (replace and clean cloth and balls as needed, and have the tables leveled).

3. Lowwer the flate rate back down to $5 from noon to eight.

But the reality is if they did these things, they would go out of busness. But I acn always dream...

one of the places i shoot here in georgia is in gwinett county and you can't smoke at all and they do just fine. even when it was in the low twenties last winter. i think if people want to shoot and they smoke and they like the room they just deal with the inconvenience - at least that's what they were doing here. i am just glad i don't smoke even at 20 degrees i ain't goin' outside for three minutes:grin:

Things I'd Like

1. More Diamond tables. He has four barboxes and I'd like to see him phase out his older 8 and 9 footers and replace them with Diamonds

2. Put in added money for his tournaments. He does once in awhile but not that often

3. Get a jukebox that contains no rap or hip-hop. I normally ignore it but sometimes it gets hard trying to concentrate with Crank that Soulja Boy in my ear

1. Turn the air conditioning on.

2. Turn the air on

3. DID I MENTION TURN THE AIR CONDITIONING ON? ARE YOU LISTENING ROOM OWNERS?
