what would be the best type of wood for coring?

Has anyone tried to core their cues w/ a different wood aside from maple?
I'm planning to ask my cue maker to build a cue, cored using IPE wood.
As per http://www.novausawood.com/woodhardness.aspx
& http://www.novausawood.com/woodstiffness.aspx, it is one of the hardest wood, stiffest but not as dense as PH.

Will there be a big difference in terms of playability
or should i just use maple for coring? thanks!

I'd go with what the cuemaker suggests, assuming he is a competent builder. Seasoned ipe, mangaris, gurapa, and purpleheart have been tested and successfully used by the cuemakers I work with. Whatever piece of coring wood will be used, IMO, should have at least decent tone (not thuddy) and be predominantly straight grained.

Coring Wood

Purple Heart, Bocote or laminated maple gives the most bang for the buck.

That is why i would like to see if the IPE wood will work. co'z the strength and stiffness of the said wood is almost twice as PH.

if it will not work, i would go for PH. thanks! :)

Tulipwood or zircote forearm? Maple core.
Curly Narra, purpleheart or bocote core. I don't like Ipe at all.
Curly maple should be cored too imo.

i have cored 3-4 different forearms with IPE and i really like it.i have cored Cocobolo and Maple both with IPE and was very pleased both.i bought a big IPE board on Ebay and cut it up into squares and it has excellent tone.it rings like some of the dense Rosewoods i have and is incredibly stable.i like it for cores over Maple and PH as long as weight is not an issue.

as far as not being as dense as PH i am not so sure.the IPE i have is definitely more dense than PH and actually closer to Ebony.the hit has been excellent every time and as you said it is plenty stiff and strong.
