CueTable Help

This knocked me out of last night's tournaments. I was left this and shot the seven in the corner with top right to try to get on the 8. Instead I scratched in the opposite long corner. Is it even possible to play shot and get on the 8 or should have tried a safe? If safe, how would you play it?

Did you scratch in the corner near the cue ball? Seems like the right shot but the speed would be tricky, at least for me. I wouldn't know how to play safe on this one. Tough shot.

I'm with TX on this, kick one rail. I am way more comfortable kicking than trying for those long thin cuts like that.

+1. I only like the cut shot if I can see the bottom of the cueball, and can swing whitey in with a slight, predictable amount of curve to help avoid the scratch.

Didn't see the 7 ball on first glance. Funny how I miss balls in both 2 and 3 dimension situations. I like the 1 rail kick. The only thing is kicking the 7 ball in and getting shape on the 8 is a tough ask. Maybe you can kick the 7 in and if left straight in on the 8 do the draw straight into the 8 and have the 8 rail and pop the cue ball back down table safety? Kicking the 7 is just a tough all-in shot to take. I think cutting the 7 with the cue ball on the rail is even harder.

Classic High Ball Jump. Cue high on the cue ball and elevate when making the 8. The cue ball will jump after hitting the 8, land on the rail and is it rolls off the rail back on to the playing surface, you get the angle to hit he opposite long rail and come out for the 9. Pretty easy shot, try it out.

That would result in BIH coz he is shooting the 7. Smartie.

I'd kick at it one rail.

This.

If you tried to cut it, more then likely you'd just leave it hanging right in front of the pocket letting your opponent get an easy out.

Kick it. I'd brether give him bih with that setup then miss it by inches with a cut.

Normally, on a tight pocket table I would attempt a lame safety trying to get the cue ball back to the same rail it came from leaving the 7 ball as close to it's original position (down table/head rail) as possible but my greatest concern would be to leave the cue ball as clost to frozen to the foot rail as possible after hitting the 7 with a thin cut.

But in this case, the kick looks fairly promising and I think I could hit the 7 ball with enough speed to pocket it (because it is SO close to the pocket) and get shape on the 8 ball. I definitely wouldn't try to cut it or to use side spin with the cue ball frozen to the rail and 9 feet from the object ball.

For those guys that would kick the seven ball. Is the logic that you may make the ball or if you miss, you have a shot at leaving the other guy with a bad shot?

The correct shot depends on your opponents abilities. There have been several good options already explained. I made the one rail kick on the first try and got position on the 8.

Another option is to shoot at the 7 ball just barely to the right of center. You should play for the double kiss. The 7 ball will go to the left and the cue ball will come back to you leaving your opponent a bank shot.

Shot

No, I would pull out all of the stops on that shot and go for broke. I would kick at the 7, fairly hard with a lot of upper right english, hoping to make it and go 2 rails down towards the eight.

If I just hit the 7 and did not make it, then the faster speed could put some distance between the 7 and cue ball, leaving my opponent a tougher shot.

The shown table position is very difficult to play a two-way shot. You either paly for a safety, or play for the win.

If you are good with kicks and know how to move the CB 1.5 ball widths as it reflects off the rail, then kicking to win is a good play. Just don't expect it to finish as a two-way.

Back to my earlier post: I would play onay of the three depending on how (and what parts of) my game was playing that night.

Thanks all, I never considered the kick at that point but will in the future. I also have to work on my kicking much more to make the effort worthwhile.

WRONG! The faster speed ensures the CB will scratch. Or maybe tht is just for me...!
