What would you PAY extra for at your local pool hall?

I like the previous suggestion of an area for serious players, where the equipment is well taken care of. But I really would love a decent ventilation system! I love to play but get pounding headaches from the clouds of cigarette smoke. I know some have to smoke, I am not against them doing so, I just want to be able to breathe, and not have a headache, so I can give them my A game! I would go a lot more often if I could enjoy it more. Many others tell me the same thing, they have to wash clothes and take a shower when they go home to the wife and kids!

Yea, that's a drag. I used to close up the pool room and go home to bed, and wake up the next day and I could smell my clothes in the other room...

and I'm a smoker!

Just curious about this as a pool room owner. If your pool hall started charging say a $3.00 cover charge to get in, what would you expect from them? Just your top choice. Whether it means newer cloth on the tables, Hooter's type rack girls, or free snacks. Please just choose one! Usually players and pool room owners are on different pages in terms of what needs to be done in their rooms. So just throwing out the question.

I know personally I could never charge $3.00 cover charge because half my customers don' t have $3.00 to their name! LOL.

Very rarely would I go to a poolroom that has a cover charge. I'd say practically never! If you're going to offer something for the cover charge, chicken wings would be nice.

One place I freguent offers free coffee all day long until 6:00 PM. That's a nice touch. If they were to put in a $5 cover charge in addition to table time, guess where I'd not be playing?

how about NO JUKEBOX NIGHT, come on pool players you know what i mean! :)

If you can't go no jukebox, how about adding a track to the jukebox that is 4 minutes of quite!

If I was to goto a pool hall that had a cover charge of like 5$ which i could see as being very reasonable.

I would hope they have nice tables good cloth, level, plenty of room, prompt service, good music at a reasonable level, and a clean place.

Now for me i would prefer they just put that 5$ towards table time. Or something of your choice, IE drinks, food.

I would also pay more for a partitioned off quiet side with brand new tables cloth and balls, take my club for instance they have 15 count em 15snooker tables and in the last 2 months I have counted only 2 tables being active at any 1 time and yet every pool table is always busy so does it not make sense to get rid of the snooker tables and put in more pool tables in the downstairs area. What do you guys think?.

Scorpion,

Ummmm yea. 15 snooker tables? unless your over in Europe, most places in the U.S. have 1-3 snooker tables in thier pool hall. The pool hall i frequent has two Billiards tables, that on the weekend are normally taken from about 5pm till close by Asian guys who play endlessly.

But if they added 1 or 2 more billiard tables they would be losing 2 maybe 3 of thier 7ft tables that are also normally taken on the weekend too.

Another thing i would pay a bit extra for, is a seperate area non-smoking just for gambling, with clean tables and balls that are cleaned once a person is done with the table. Also good ventilation and lower'd music volume.

Storm Hot Rod 300 thats the way it works here in europe most billiard clubs will have snooker tables first as there means of income and pool tables second and all I am saying is that my club is losing money because they only ever have 2 out of 15 snooker tables active.

In any pool room- id like to be able to have the speakers turned off near my table. Some pool rooms, its all or nothing and that sux.
We have a great pool room, but every now and then things seem perfect, and then you realize that the juke box isn't playing...usually early afternoon after lunch. If you can separate a pool room into two distinct areas, why not have one "no music"?

A place to sit and watch the action, without having to weave and bob evertime someone goes by.

Just some comfortable place to sit and watch...is that too much to ask? Why do pool halls make it almost impossible to do this? I remember in league last month we had to sit 50 feet away from our pool table...50 feet! Oh boy, that was fun...NOT!

Oh...and smoke eaters...then my wife would come with me....and here's the best part....she'd spend money, too! A guy otta look into that.

"Elbow room" - plenty of space around tables.

A *lot* of seats and tables. (Never enough seats for league play.)

1. THE PIT= A room with 1 tight GC4, sound proof plexiglass walls so the sweater can watch but not be a "part" of the action, and the table is sunk in the floor about 3 feet so it's like a stadium, and a little slot in the wall where the money is held and payed out after the match....

Gerry........what?....we all have dreams...:D

This kinda reminds me of what a local player here in Miami was saying to me the other day. The pool gladiator room...<cue Mad Max Thunderdome music> two bankrolls go in..one comes out...

The one thing I wish pool rooms would make sure to invest in is a good smoke eater system. I dont mind smoking so much but when the room gets hazy from the smoke it really sucks.

Alot of the suggestions people have put forth wont work on a $3-5 cover. Probably the most realistic result would be that a cover will keep the non spending "just hanging out" youngsters out.

Always let non spending "just hanging out" hot women in though :-) .

Great idea. That's the way it is at Chris's Billiards in Chicago. There is one room, the front one, that has no music at all. It's the players room, with three or four tables of maybe 13 or 14 with pretty tight pockets, especially table #10. That's the place to play. Then there are two other rooms, both with music, and the one where the twice-weekly 9 ball tournaments are played has music that isn't intolerably loud, then there's another separate room where all the bangers go and where the music is numbingly loud.

Take your pick...

expectations

1. Clean equipment - balls, cloth, rails, tables, bathrooms.
2. Matching sets of balls - make sure they are all the same type, color, with the same type of cueball. No polyester cueballs with phelolic balls or vice versa.
3. Wait staff to come around and service the players once in a while.
4. A decent menu with some non-greasy, non-fat options, like carrots and dip.
5. Room around the tables and staff that knows proper pool etiquette.
6. A williingness to stay open for after hours action. (I would pay more for this).
7. Tournaments that welcome and celebrate the best players around.

I don't know about this being the way it is in Europe overall. In Germany, the Netherlands, Switzterland, Austria, Belgium, and France you will find many more pool tables than snooker tables and in a lot of places no snooker table at all. When I was in England several years ago the trend was to replace snooker tables with "American Pool" tables (9 footers).

I think pure snooker clubs are definitely fading if not already obselete. Our partner Milliken Cloth reports that they are currently covering several thousand pool tables in the larger chains in England yearly.

I actually like the idea of a cover charge if its applied to your pooltime or maybe you get a couple of free Cokes. I think the most important thing to do though is treat your players like royalty. I don't mean everyone with a cuestick; solid B players and above. The guys that are always there and always in action. If you treat them right they will bring in more business for you.

I say this because the poolroom I frequent doesn't care about the good players. Its got by far the best equipment in the area but no one worth a darn wants to go there and play because of the atmosphere and other patrons. The music is too loud and there are a bunch of drunks always at the bar. There is no "action" table and its first come first serve no matter who you are. So on Friday and Saturday nites when all the tables are full I have to get on the wait list like everyone else. I know that I'm nobody special but in the pool room where I'm number 2 or 3 on the pecking order and I'm there every nite I should be treated better. It doesn't matter that I'm there supporting the pool hall the rest of the days during the week.

One thing that might get you around some of the above mentioned issues would be a membership card. With the card you get in with no cover and you get a discount on things. Sell them for $100 bucks a year or something like that.

I would gladly drive across town and pay $3.00 cover to get in if ; 1) The room was free from smoke filled air. 2) The equiptment was of high quality, level and had good cloth with no holes on em. 3) The wait staff has to be very attractive and friendly. 4) The food would have to be excellent with a good variety dishes to choose from. 5) Ohh..... and you would have to be a nice, informed room owner who is in touch with the pulse the majority your patrons.
Hold on, I just described my local Pool Room.
So, I guess you would have to pay me three dollars everytime I drove across town to play in your room (we will count the $3.00 for travel and gas). LOL

Hey I did like the idea from a previous post about the 4 minutes of quite being an option on the jukebox. I love hearing the cracking of the balls and he sound of the balls falling in the pockets. It's music to my ears and the only tune I like hearing while I'm play pool. That's.......that's what I think.
