I was just wondering what everyone thought is better game to play to become a run out player? I know 9 ball is better for position play but i play 9 ball all the time and still cant constantly run out. Would love to hear your opinions thanks everyone

It depends. With 8ball you have more options for running out. You can get shape on multiple balls instead of just one, but there is more defense invovled because of traffic and clusters. 9-ball you have to get shape on one ball at a time and use patterns to get through racks.

I would suggest throwing 3 or 4 random balls on the table and running them in order. Get some patterns down. Add a ball as you get more and more comfortable.

The pros can't CONSTANTLY run out.

Try breaking the balls and then take the lowest 4 numbers off the table.
Take more off if you still can't run out. Add some when you can.

If you are playing alone, try rotation billiards and stick to drills. I think Myrtle_04 is right, 8ball with a good break would be an easier runout with short paths and stop and go position. 9 or 10 ball would be better for learning postion play plus the book, The 99 Critical Shots in Pool. Just my opinion,I'm not a pro.:D

Alright i will try some rotation next time i get to a 9ft and i will try to read some of the book i have it just never finished it

Practice 14.1 to improve your 9-Ball game!

play both, in fact practice all games.

It's a lot easier to practice for long periods of time if you mix it up a bit.

I'll second that!
another great game that will improve your skill is rotation.

There's some good advice! It'll stop you getting bored while practicing plus you'll see some situations crop up that can benefit all your games.

As mentioned above, 14.1 will do the most for your game. It teaches you how to plan the rack, how to break open clusters, how to move the cueball in tight places, and most of all...it teaches you how to bear down.

Straight pool is the only game that puts pressure on you in practice. Once you've put together a high run, you'll start giving 100%. It hurts really bad to get close to your all-time best to let it all slip away with a clumsy error. Worse yet, your opponent might turn around & put you in that chair for a long time. You'll start looking at all angles & all patterns, putting you cueball on lockdown, and making damn sure you hit center pocket.

9-ball won't do that for you...it's too easy to fall into "oh well, I'll get to shoot again in a few shots".

i think they both offer very important knowledge that will help improve your game. i would also recommend throwing in some 14.1.

Why play checkers when you can play chess on the same board?

Play 14.1 period, I say .. forget those other mickey mouse games.

I recently asked a similar question about practice and got some good feedback....search my screen name on this forum to find it....only a couple of weeks old...

As said, 14.1....also, work rotation games with 3, 6, and 10 balls....work on 8-ball break and run-outs.....also advise working on your banks, I often leave these out in practice and being confident banking is a big plus....I've actually come up with a practice rountine, nothing special, but it gives me a start...

Warm-up...pick a shot a work the different types of english, and try to work the ball to any position on the table....use short from 99 critical or other book if needed....
9-ball break, remove bottom 6, race the ghost to 5....in 9-ball, always try be on a 3-ball plan, recognize tough balls and clusters early....
9-ball break, remove bottom 3, race ghost to 5
10-ball break, race ghost to 5
14.1, race to 100, record high runs
8-ball, race ghost to 5
Short banks, race ghost to 5

Not all need to be done in one session.....I warm-up with one shot because many gave advice that it's really tough to just practice....I threw in the games because it makes it fun for me....also, make sure to play people, don't just bang balls around by yourself all the time.....play some one-pocket if you get a chance....learn as many games as possible...

Playing 9-Ball is the game of position and/or leave play. Even no-brainer run outs can be screwed up.

Playing 8-Ball (inside out (7 to the 1 or 9 to the 15) or outside in (1 to the 7 or 15 to the 9) is another great game for position play. This is an extremely tough game, the Break Shot & making that first ball is omnipotent. Leave play can render your opponent helpless.

Straight Pool & one-pocket are the mother-loads, but you'll need to master the other games, before seriously embracing those goals.

Good Luck..

The only thing 8 ball will help you with is 8 ball. Play Straight pool for all around improvment.

Thanks Everyone so it seems 14.1 is the way to go maybe we can play some wed mosconiac and u can show me the right way?

Straight pool will improve your play in all games.

This must be a trick question with some pretty tricked up answers.

If you want to become a runout 9-ball player, it would be silly to do it without playing a lot of 9-ball.

If you want to become a runout 8-ball, you better play a lot of 8-ball.

Playing all games helps round out your overall game, but if you want to give yourself a goal for a specific game, you might as well play that game the most, eh?
