Whats the best STEAL you got a cue for and what is it?

Good stories guys keep em coming. I am waiting for my freaking pre 85 meucci to get back from being refinished. And the wait is way longer then it supposed to have been. I started this thread to take my mind off of it well i didnt think much about that.lol Good stories

I got a pretty good deal on the Madison Bob I am currently playing with. I have been offered twice what I paid for it, which would be a handsome proffit, but I like it too much to sell it.

I went to my grandmothers complex and played daily at her rec-room. An older fella asked me if I was interested in a cue he had and I said sure. He came back with a black Brunswick flip-top case and pulled out this plain four point Balabushka. He said his kids had no desire to have it and he wanted me to have it seeing that I was practicing everyday. He said he would sell it to me for what he paid for it...$115. I sadly lost that cue and two other very playable older cues to water damage suffered in Hurricane Andrew 12 years later in 1992. :(
Great story but sorry for the tragic ending..i wonder how many other Balabushka's are in attic's,garages, and basements that people don't know about....

When I bought my pool room,a guy had a three hundred dollar tab and was moving in two weeks. He asked me to end the tab and throw in a hundred his way for his cog. Nice cue probably worth a grand.

I bought a Dishaw 6 pt cue for 225. It was in mediocre shape but had 2 shafts. The next day while playing with it a guy I know on the next table over was playing $100 one hole. he lost his third straight game and throws down his cue saying he just can't make a ball with it. I moved in with the prop of a trade and eventually footed 75 boot. The cue was a beautiful Phillippi with ivory chunks not just inlays. Sold it for 1800.

I also traded 2 old schons (one 4 pt, one plain) for an early purpleheart SW.

My last good trade was a Blevins cue I paid 200 for plus 70 boot for a brand new Rick Howard cue That I saw the gut pay 950 for.

Always looking for a deal.

P.S.

My dad bought a 6 pt Franklin SW w/ 2 shafts (Ebony with 2 inlays) for 300.
Must run in the family.LOL

Now that is amazing! I can't remember the last time I saw a cue priced right on ebay. And to buy something like that from a guy with 0 feedback....well how do you pull your pants up and get them around your massive pair of ..........

Bob

That is actually the catch. I told the seller that he has to meet my cousin in a pool hall to pay/pick up the cue. You are right tho, I wont trust a 0 feedback seller in ebay

I bought a used Danny Tibbitts many years ago (1990 or so) for $150. It was the first cue he had inlaid with ivory. About the same time I traded a brand new Meucci which retailed for less than $400 for a 4 point Joss West. Sold the Joss West the next week for $600. In the late 80's I bought a Richard Black for $125. Traded it even for a $400 McDermott. Traded the McDermott for a Joss and traded the Joss for a Ivory inlaid Bensen with the the same guy I originally traded the Black for the McDermott with. Recently bought another 4 point Richard Black 1984 model with ivory inlays. Got a good deal but might put it up for sale and am not saying what I paid for it. I take trades on my cues sometimes and have picked up some nice cues through the years, but the above seem to be the best in the front of my memory.

being in the billiard supply industry, and in vegas, i wait for them to come to me. i have gotten a '89 josswest, worth about $2800 and the fellinie case it was in for $500. then a tad, worth about $2000 for $600.

didn't like the JW, 13.25 dia shafts, sold it for $1600, the tad wasn't the 1 i want so i sold it for $1600 also. nice little profits

Wakuljr - My Balabushka (That is in a safety deposit box) is in Dark Brown suede Fellinie case. A pick-up truck once ran over it with the Balabushka in it. Stick & Case were fine - No damage except the tire marks on the case.

There is a fellow coming into the poolroom that I play in and he has an old Fellinie case. It is fake black alligator, I think. What would it be worth?

I posted this a while back on the newsgroups....

remember this thread ????

Well last night a guy comes in the pool room with a gorgeous Tim Scruggs
cue. (at least 10-15 years old)
4 large ivory square design inlays in the butt, 4 multi-colored points, with
ivory half moon, and cent symbols designs in the points as well.

He says he bought it at the flea market for $10 ! The guy had no idea what
it was or its worth. Anyways he then sold it to someone at the pool room
for $300! We then looked it up in the blue book and it is well over $3000

I knew Flash kept a bunch of his cues in lockers/storage, so when the time
came up to renew his rent on it, he could not pay it obviously because he
died. Someone obtained these cues from storage and they ended up at a flea market!

I just went there this morning, but could not find the booth (there were
lots that were not open yet) I will be going back this weekend to see if I
can find any bargains.

Unbelievable

Man i wish i could come across some deals like you guys have but i have not been playing as long or as young as some of you.;) I plan on always checking pawn shops wherever i go you never know.

my best deal was a 150+ inlayed 6 point runde w/ a leather wrap for 600 bucks with two shafts. But the best deal I heard of was a fancy ernie martinez bought for 350.

I evenly traded a Meucci (the one with the road as the points) that I had a total of $100 invested in, for a 60's Ivory Jointed Tad (plain forearm, with the usual ebony, silver rings and groovy rings in the butt sleeve).

This is when I was about 18. Ended up going broke and letting the Tad go :(

rambows

bought 3 rambows and 7 original shafts for $800.
one was purpleheart.
one had an original ivory buttcap with stacked veneers over it.
i did ok on that deal.
