What's the news on SVB instructional?

I would HAVE to agree with this ... how many posts do we see or times do you hear in the pool room, about people trying to find a certain TAR match they heard about but didn't see. Hell, I'm perfectly expecting to buy every TAR match prior to 2010, since I didn't know about TAR until around then. Hoping they're going to add all the old matches for that exact reason. :)

The old stuff is coming. It just happens that in the last couple months I have had three TAR matches hit, the USBTC, the SVB project and the Vimeo VOD solution all hit at once.

Later today I am announcing TAR 33 and 34. They are amazing matches. Its a good problem to have but at the moment I just have more things going on than I can fully focus on. The old matches will be available. The old old ones will be really cheap as well simply because the production value back then makes me cringe.

Justin, I just bought and watched the video on my MacBook Air. Here's my unsolicited feedback:

1. Video and production quality were top-notch - kudos!

2. The copy editing needed another set of eyes and spell-checking, as it detracted from the otherwise professional content. For examples, "Staring Shane Van Boening," "Co-Staring Jennifer Barretta," "Approch the shot." (I'm sure you could find a pool enthusiast to proof-read for you prior to shipping in exchange for a free copy – pick me, pick me!)

3. Content on this one was relatively thin, and tough but necessary questions weren't asked. For example: "What happens when the distance between CB and OB changes?" Obviously, you can't keep aiming inside ferrule edge to outside OB edge for a thin cut when the CB is very close to the OB, so what is Shane's adjustment technique? My litmus test of deep content is "will I watch it again (and again)?" and on this one, unfortunately, I won't – it's easy to learn what Shane's doing with one viewing, and the rest is left to personal practice and experience.

4. The price was about right, although I think $10 would make it more of a no-brainer for 30-min lightweight content like this. In general, I think this is the best business model for pool instructional videos, certainly *much* better than $40 for a DVD that I have to wait on. $10-15 makes it an impulse purchase, and the increased sales volume should make up for the lower unit price and nominal losses from password sharing / screen grab copying among friends.

Hope that helps, and keep up the great work!

Thank you for the feedback.

It is tough getting Shane to explain exactly what he is thinking and executing. Jennifer really saved us in that regard. We knew going in the aiming would be the hardest one to get.

Cleary did a great job on the production and editing. He is doing these as a passion project while working full time with a family so some things like the spelling got missed but in the future I expect things to improve as he fine tunes the editing.

By delivering these online we can do them at a lower price point. The whole VOD model is new so its a matter of finding the lowest price point that still makes sense for all involved. My experience is that the target market is so tiny that dropping the price 30%-40% does not generate enough additional sales to make up for it. Once the VOD capability is up and running with some time to promote it that may change. That is certainly my hope for the future.

Thanks for your feedback. I hope you enjoy the future episodes.

Just did my first purchase of TAR production, good work, worth the $ imo. How many parts does it comes in?

We shot for two days with the idea of doing three to four DVDs. Since then the model has changed to a VOD/digital download model which will allow us to do cheaper pricing for the customer and lower risk for us.

The Aiming is the first segment that was cut. We are planning on an episode of Breaking, Mental Game and Running Out. Most will be longer than the aiming episode with the Running out possibly being broken up into the different games.

We just have to see if people would prefer shorter cheaper segments or longer ones that cost a bit more. We are fluid on the pricing and structure at the moment and will try and do what our customers say they want.

DVD's might happen but it would be after all the content is edited and online. At that point we would know exactly what we are working with and could package a DVD intelligently.

Even though I think aiming is subjective, I bought the video to continue to support TAR. Keep up the good work Justin!

Thank you sir.

With this series I wanted to make it clear that our goal was just to show how Shane does things. Personally I have no clue what all the available systems and styles are out there when it comes to aiming. Our goal was to just show how Shane does it.

I was worried that capturing the information in a manner easily understood would be hard and it was. I think Cleary and Jennifer did a great job making it as accessible as possible. End of the day its supposed to be a look into how one man plays and hopefully people can take something from that to add to their toolbox of skills.

With the format and quality you have made Justin, there really should be no excuses from the pool communitiy for not buying!

Andrew Cleary deserves all the credit for the how the final product looks. All I did was get everyone together and sell the final product. Simonis, CSI and Bad Boys Billiard Productions really helped us out by getting behind the project and supporting it from the beginning.

Cleary spent a lot of time on editing and graphics. We shot five camera angles for two days. Wading through all that footage, syncing everything, managing all the files and cutting something together that looks good and makes sense is a big job.

Aim the Tip

I posted a thread on here in May 2011 (you can look it up) called "aim the tip"..it was a youtube video of Dave Mullen and his "aim with the tip/ferrule technique. It seemed interesting and nothing I had seen before. I tried it and got great results from it and it is the "system" I use today after trying 90/90..CTE, Pro One and of course ghost ball. Funny to see that SVB..easily one of the best players in the world uses a VERY similar method if not identical. What I find amusing and unfortunately typical were the Teaching Pros like Bob Jewett and Dr. Dave pointing out how faulty the system was/is and how it would only work for a very limited amount of shots and then its basically useless. I dont think Shane would agree with those critics AT ALL. And with all due respect, I guess the old saying is true..those who can do..

Very good quality. I was able to watch it on my big screen through my Roku. Roku has a Vimeo app. I looked awesome.

Never tried the Roku media player i have the WDTV live hub and is another great media player. Stream everything to the big screen

nice!

Although I'm not a fan of Shane's aiming method (I understood what he does already from the TAR podcasts), I purchased this video to support the series (I think Shane's breaking video will be the nuts!), and for the player himself - always a pleasure to see Shane shooting, he makes it look so easy, as Jennifer mentions a couple of times in the video as well

The video quality is great, as well as the graphics - congrats to all involved!

The VOD is going to make TAR's great matches available for us living in europe. The $ is cheap and we get great pool at a very good price. England, Germany, Norway, Poland, Sweden, France and so on are countries become new markets for you Justin. The time difference has been an issue, and even if you offered the loop solution the VOD is going to be the big game changer which is awesome. Good luck!

Great job Mr. Cleary!

Thank you. I had to crank this out fairly quick and I did my best in that timeframe working around work & family. I'm happy with how it came out. Hopefully I can knock out the next ones quicker.

Just because an aiming system might not work "in theory" for a wide range of shots does not mean that it cannot be used effectively. Aiming systems can offer many benefits, and some people can use them quite effectively, even if some of the premises of the system might be "faulty" on paper. For more info, see:

Dave

Where have you been Dave? Haven't seen you posting much lately.

I've been busy trying to finish a project I've been working on the last 2 years. I'll be announcing it soon (hopefully, by the end of May). My "day job" has also been keeping me busy lately.

Thanks for asking.

Catch you later,
Dave

The two methods are different. [Caveat: I have not yet viewed the recent TAR video on Shane's method.]

The Mullen Method, as presented in a video by Mr. Mullen, involves aiming the edge of the ferrule at the intended contact point on the OB -- using the left side of the ferrule for cuts to the left and right side of the ferrule for cuts to the right. I have described the limitations of that method more than once.

Shane's method, so far as I know it from a TAR interview and an earlier teaching video, is to aim the center or an edge of the ferrule at the outside edge of the OB. To allow for more cut angles than that would provide, he adjusts the aiming point on the OB for some shots.

Both methods involving using the ferrule for aiming, but in different ways.
