Whats the purpose??

Use a Magic Rack, no need to brush anything, the balls will stay frozen.

The other night when I could not get the balls to freeze in the Magic Rack, it was because the balls were different sizes. You can't do much about that except to bring your own set.

X2 for the magic rack...I think this should be used exclusively in all events and leagues. Best rack ever in my opinion.

At the amateur level imo brushing back the head ball, or any ball, is simply an attempt to freeze that ball to the rest of the rack, especially if the rest of the rack looks decent and you don't want to disturb the rest.

Btw, in one pocket imo, a frozen rack is even more important than 9 ball. I brush the balls in a one pocket rack all the time.

I think ppl are making a big deal of nothing here. It's simply trying to freeze the balls. I don't think it's any form of cheating.

I've never seen written rules on racking other 1 ball on the spot, 9/10ball in the center and the rest in random order. Aside from that, are there other written rules on what you can do/can't do while racking? If you created a gap either on purpose or not, is that against a rule?

You guys must play with much better equipment then I am accustomed to in my pool room.

The balls stick to the rack, the balls are different sizes, if the apex ball rolls forward into a dent and you push the rack up to that ball it creates gaps throughout the rest of the rack.

If I find a sweet spot where the balls are cooperating and there is just one micro gap I'm brushing the ball backwards. But that's just me.

THIS! You guys try to have a good rack without touching any of the balls with your hands at typical pool halls around the country. 15 yr old balls. Crap racks. Worn spots. No thanks. I'm not going to throw my back out racking for 10 minutes without touching the balls when often times a simple brush of the ball may fix the issue.

And I'm not even talking a "perfect" rack but simply not a slug rack.

It is to create small space in the rack.....in 9 ball it makes the wing ball go a larger percentage of the time.. In 10 ball it make a the 2 balls behind the 1 ball dead to the side pockets.....the gap is only about a match stick....it works try it.

Yep. This guy knows what's going on.

Bingo.....

The only reason I do it,is to get the head ball to freeze. I really don't think you should be allowed to touch them at all tho. But I' not a rack mechanic either:wink: John B.

to ensure that the 1 is frozen with the rest of the rack - increases the chances of making the 1 ball on the side and the wing ball.
