I've got a little sneaky pete that I leave behind the bar at the place I frequent most. I am wondering what kind of tip would work best for it because I just wanna use that one cue for breaking and playing. I don't wanna take my nicer stuff out there unless its for a tournament or league night. I need some ideas for something that can hold up to breaking but still has some playability... thanks for the thoughts...

Water buffalo. I've got one on a cue that I used to break with, and occasionally play with. Breaks surprisingly well and shows no mushrooming. Not so hard that it's odd to play with, in fact I scarcely notice a difference from my other cues's tips, mostly medium layereds of one kind or another.

I like pressed triangles. Im not really into fancy high dollar tips. I have recently tried that emerald green tip. I do like it.

I vote for the Triangle as well. Been using them for years. I give 'em an A for playing and a B as far as breaking...but a good tip that can handle both.

tip for the day

Don't ever play pool with a man that has two rings on his bridge hand.

Water buffalo tends to be a little hard, for my personal taste.

IMHO You can't go wrong with a Moori tip. They last forever, once the initial mushrooming is taken care of. Install it, use it, forget about it. Ideal in my opinion for the "I leave it behind the bar cue.".

If I decide to do the moori route, will medium press hold up for any length of time or should i throw on a hard one and just go with it?

As others have, I also would have to suggest a Triangle tip or a Sumo Water Buffalo. The choice is yours as far as hardness is concerned. Both of these tips can stand up to the duality you require. (breaking and playing)

The Medium will hold up very well, for your purposes, in my opinion. You will typically get some initial mushrooming, shortly after installation. Fix this, and your tip will last forever (well ... a long time, anyway!).

My vote is Sniper all the way. It mushrooms less than all the other tips mentioned so far. AND it plays jam up. I break and play with one cue that has a Sniper tip and it doesn't mushroom or lose its shape. I don't have the hardest break in the world...

Just make sure you have it installed by a repairman with a lathe and experience installing Snipers. They need to be installed with the razor blade technique to avoid damaging them during the installation process.

Good luck.

Also if the cue gets returned to the general population, you will be able to pick it out by looking at the tip. The bangers won't know its any different.

Edit. misread first post and thought you were doing this to a house cue you liked, not your own sneaky pete.
