What's with Earl?

I didn't make it to Palm harbor last weekend but a friend of mine was there and he commented about Earl. In his first match Earl ran 7 straight racks. In the 8th he missed a shot then looked at the bandaids he has on his bridge fingers and started removing them. Then he was heard to say, "that's what's wrong - it was too short." Refering to the tape.

Then in his next matches when he would miss a shot he would just rake in the remaining balls and conceed the game. I saw him do that at Capone's back in March. The last 5 balls one time.

Anyone know why he is doing this?

No...but Dr. Cue's Protege might know what the next step is going to be.

3 options:
1) throw his Cuetec Cue
2) grab a ball and fling it through the wall
3) both 1 & 2
4) then post his bad luck on AZBilliards forums.

hope this helps.
if Earl reads it he should be in business since he told me once i was his buddy. he told me this right after he called a fan a piece of shit. not me, either.

DCP

yeh I saw him rake the last 5 against Chris Bartram at the DCC. That's the first time I saw him in person. He act like a crazy man.

On case of conceding the rack "too early" the Tournament Director should call unsportmanship conduct and deduct 1-3 racks from the conceding player or have some other penalty waiting. It's far too simple to keep your opponent cold by not letting him shoot any balls during matches. Ridiculous that his opponent accepted that without any objections....

Jake,

He was doing the same thing in Greenville, SC at the Viking event a few weeks back. Once, his opponent was on 6 (I think Earl was on 4 racing to 7)Earl scratched on the break and raked all the balls off the table and conceded the match. It was not an easy runout. This was after someone had spent an exorbitant amount on him in the calcutta. Then, on the one loss side, he hardly tried and a local player put him out of the tournament 7-4. He was doing the same thing, conceding really tough outs the entire second match with 5-6 balls left on the table.

You can never tell what Earl will do next.

I think Earl's elevator doesn't reach the top floor. He is couple of sandwiches short of a picnic basket. Not playing with a full deck...
:p

Despite his whining antics, I always enjoy watching him play. He is phenomenal and yet volatile and anything can happen in his matches...

But, I don't like him sharking his opponents like that. Shame on you Earl.

earl strickland, born one year after me in 1961, is someone to watch. weather you love him or hate him, you are drawn to him like a car accident on the side of the road, with many deaths. you wish things were different, but here he is. my guess is when he was younger, 1975-1985, he was the sharpest shooter in the world. but now, he feels he needs an edge, something, anything, to make him "in the running" he knows, the youth of the world, are taking over, and he doesn't know how to handle this fact. so he trys gimmicks. talanted kids with sharper eyes are beating him now, and he don't like it. kids like, alex pagulian, corey dueul, ching shun yang, charlie williams, nick van den berg, mika immonen, and many others. earl will use "special glasses", thumb extensions, sharking techniques, and anything else, he could think of. with his fast wind up type stroke arm, and his little tiny fast steps around the table, he looks pumped up, crazy, alive, almost as if he's not playing pool, but, boxing a quick stepping opponent. you are drawn to him, to see what he will do next. on further analazation, we find that earl is not a very accurate player. he is not a ralf souquet or allison fisher with the white ball. his position is sloppy, and fast, but he trys to make it up with his shotmaking. he is not cold and calculated, rather quick and crazy. steve davis is cold and calculated. earl sits on the chair and his eyes look like they were taped open and his eyeballs are burning holes through his opponents brains. earl is intense, crazy, hyped up, fast, sloppy, and full of steam. he is potentiially dangerous. yet, he claims, away from the pool table, he lives in north carolina where the air is ultra-fresh, the breakfasts are ultra big and hearty, and he sits on a tractor, not far from the famous tabacco fields, and justs ponders over the crops peacefully. what earl lacks in the actual game of pool, he trys to make up for, by being exciting, cruel, intense, focused to a fault, and combustual. what have we learned from this? earl is not as good as he appears. his demeanur scares his opponents to death, thus earl wins more than his share. who could forget the now famous "BE A MAN!!!" shout to kunihiko takahashi at the world championships in 2002. this was just another way, earl could move closer to the trophy, by useing all these tactics. personally, there outta be a strict ruling on behavier at professional tournaments. earl should not be allowed to get away with any, and i mean any unprofessional behaviour. THEN, let's see how often he would win! as a last thought, studying the pros for the last 25 years, i try to get the pure essence of all of their aspects. not only their fundamentls, stance etc. etc. but what makes them tick. the biggest problem earl has, besides from being a trouble maker, is this, he starts out too strong. he doesn't know the meaning of "pace yourself" he always starts out like a rocket, but by the time he gets to the semi finals, he is out of steam. check out the world championship 2003. he built himself up, right out of the gate, by the time he was through with ching shun yang, he was powerless. earl has a lot of talent. that is obvious, the question is this, if the powers that be disqualifyed any player for doing anything wrong, such as talking to the auidence, yelling at your opponent, sharking , etc. etc. things that earl does, if they eliminated him, from the first evil thing he does at a tournament, how many would he win? if you watch his game carfully, he's excitng, powerfull, fast, energetic, focused, but people, he is sloppy! his position is so-so, his accuracy, leaves a lot to be desired. my point being, strickland needs his bag of tricks, his "smoke and mirrors" so he could win, otherwise, the real players, steve davis, ralf souquet, allison fisher, nick van den berg, would kill him.

Earl on a tractor??

Don't think so...........

How bout' a 911 PORSCHE....convertible....

And the rest is B.S. as well.

You know, maybe it's just me (I have a very strange sense of humor). I'm not trying to start a flame war, but sometime you just crack me up. I've heard of people 'Hooked on Phonics', that just pronounce or spell a word the way that they hear it 'in their head'. In the above sentence, since you don't know how to spell the word 'behavior', you'd think that AT LEAST you'd spell it wrong the way that you just spelled it wrong five seconds ago. I mean, 'behavier' and 'behaviour' in the same sentence ? I wonder what it must be like 'in your head'.. LOL ... ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha...
No offence, offense, afence meant...

lol SILENCER, that was one of your stupidest posts yet. You sit there and critique Earl's game, yet at the same time, you're a nobody in pool. You never have and never will achieve what Earl has. You think you know what skill is at the game, but you talk trash about Earl's game? Pathetic. You are a loony, delusional psycho who is a nobody in the game of pool, so you try to make a name for yourself on a pool forum. Get a life.

I was thinking the same thing: Bernie doesn't know do-do brown about pool- especially when compared to Earl. Hell, NONE of us know what Earl knows about the game.

What's that cliche? He's forgotten more about pool than (you/me/Bernie) will ever know.

"who could forget the now famous "BE A MAN!!!" shout to kunihiko takahash"

Bernie get your facts straight. It was Takeshi Okamura not Takahashi that Strickland said it to. This was after the elder Japanese statesman drilled Bustamante 11-4. Getting him confused with Takahashi is like confusing Oliver Ortmann with Thorsten Hohmann. But of course facts are not important to you. But just the noise that your mouth and fingers can make. I know the fact that so many of us respond to you is whats important. Even in a negative way. Does it make you feel more alive than getting no recognition in this world at all.Do you care? Wouldnt you want people to talk more about your merits than your defects. There are some I am sure.

Earl is a Champion. He has proved it time and time again. Talk to other Pro's. The Americans who have played him over the years respect and like him. They have walked in his mocassins so to speak. They know how hard it is to be a pro. The stress. We all cant be Efren or a Bustamante or a Allison. They are so cool in the face of defeat. Earl hates to lose but it is inevitable in the sport we love. Earl hates that pool pro's dont get the recognition they deserve. Every time I get down to shoot an important money shot and some jerk walks right by my table or stop to have a conversation with his girlfriend I think of Earl and why we pool players dont get the respect a golfer gets. Would you walk in front of somebody's putt. I think it is Earl who stirs up the pot. Not you. He forces us to think. He fights in his way for pool players. A way not that I agree in. Efren can be satisfied with making some money and being creative. His joys are simple. Earl because of who he is is more complex. A more thoughtful analysis should be taken here. It could make us understand ourselves.

Sorry I popped this post twice. It was because of the server problems that cause my error. Please just read the second post if you like. It is easier to read.

Smorgass: Actually, "behaviour" is the correct spelling pretty much everywhere except in the US. :) Don't know where Bernie is from.

Rick S: I heard that Earl drove around in a convertible 'vette? Hates to fly. ???

LOL Please don't try to offer the explanation that Bernie was spelling behavior the 'world way'.
He misspells about 40% of ALL the words he writes.
As far as 'behaviour' being spelled that way everywhere except the US is concerned, well, I live IN THE U.S. and I expect Bernie (who is from New Yawk) to spell it the American way... OK ?
I have nothing else to say on the spelling issue, I'm out. Thanks for joining in.. Doug
