What's Your AZ Perceived Top 10??

From what I have seen over the years the talent pool of this board and the other prominent pool forums is pretty deep. There are quite a few people with day jobs who post here that are decent shortstop to semi-pro level and a few who could be contenders if they chose that route.

It would be impossible for me to list a top ten - one thing I know is that I wouldn't be anywhere near it if we were to have a series of tournaments and all the good players played.

John - will take the seven from all the top ten non-pros on AZB :-))

Ditto. If there are a thousand posters on AZB, I'd be happy to be considered in the top 500.

Fred <~~~ right about 499.

To anybody who named me, thank you.

My list must begin with Steve Lipsky, a fellow New Yorker far more skilled than me. Here's my list, and of course, some of it is pure speculation. Occasional posters may be off my radar, too, and if omit a low volume, jam-up player, I apologize.

Steve Lipsky
TheOne
Joey A
ZigZagMaster
Jimmy M
Tate
Rod
Rude Dog
Blackballed
Jude Rosenstock

I'm sure I left out some serious worldbeaters, but those were the names on the tip of my tongue.

A year for now, I can see HobokenAPA and Williebetomore being serious contenders to make my list.

Hi there,

This is my top eight in no order.

SoDakotaKid (Shane)
Rude Dog
Steve Lipsky
Louie Ulrich
Blackjack
CrownCityCorey
Jimmy M
Jude Rosenstock

And Craig, really...

You left it up to an Australian to make your arrangements for you? You know Aussie's drink more than the Brits do......

I will be having fun in Vegas without you, with all my Australian friends....

Is this just an idle musing or are you for real?

He's for real and I'm betting on him. Against non pros (and some pros too), Wayne has definitely got the edge.

But you got me playing banks WayneO. Provided I'm in stroke. And that only happens about once a year.

That's because they drink no strength beer in girl glasses! Wait until he comes to England and starts drinking pints of Stella, or more commonly known "wife beater"!

PS
I think Tickets was distracted by someone! ;) :D

Have fun in Vegas Grrr

Ooh, many good players here with a dozen or two world beaters combining the active posters and those you prefer to stay anonymous and lurk in the shadowy corners of AzB. Some are more open on their accomplishments and some refuse to give out any information. But, without mentioning any names, I think those who should be in the top 10 here, know it themselves (except a few humble players :) ).

A major AzB get-together would be very interesting!

Thought this would be interesting since we all probably base our opinions on the "storys" we read on here. Tell me who you think are the top ten players in AZ Billiards forums, no Pro's or yourself allowed in the list!

:D

From my own playing experience - no order, they all ROCK:

CrownCity Corey (Corey Harper)
MexPoolPlayer (Oscar Dominguez)
SJM - ("Captain Hook")
Wayne (Wayne Pullen)

From references, I'll go with SJM's list:

Steve Lipsky
TheOne
Jimmy M
Rod
Rude Dog
Blackballed

and add..

Lil John

I gotta believe Lil John would wax most of us the way he's always begging for a big money game.

Finally a mention :)

Although it is specific to one hall, Jude's post on the Amsterdam Billiards pecking order had me thinking. So I thought I'd have a go at that also (excluding pros) to get an idea of how strong it is. Here is my top 10 order (from what I've seen) of the regulars although I'm sure Jude and SJM can do a more accurate list as I've only been a regular for about a year.

Steve Lipsky
Jonathon Smith
Jimmy Gottier
Mhet Vergara
SJM
Jesse Rice
Jude Rosenstock
Jennifer Barretta
Jason Kane
Mike Yednak

All are supremely talented players and I hope to be able to break into it sometime next year.

Aside from the fact that I do not agree with your order or whom you choose to define as regulars, it is your opinion though I think you may lack some intimate knowledge. However, I seriously object to including Jennifer Barretta on this list. She is, by definition, a professional pool player. She made more pool-related money last year than everyone else on that list COMBINED and I think her accomplishments in the WPBA are well known at this point.

I wouldn't post something like that. A local room's totum pole? It would undoubtedly offend people.

I have seen some of the players who post here play a little at DCC. As far as a Top 10 by what I have read here and reputations that get talked about, I'll give mine. Don't mean to offend anyone and thanks to those who mentioned me.
Rude Dog
Jimmy Mendoza
Steve Lipsky
Shane S. D. KID
Wayne
Jay Helfert
Louis Ulrich
And the other 3 to be named later.
Hard to pick from all the posters.

Wow!

First let me say that i am extremely flattered for times that i was mentioned on someones list.
It is nice to know that i was held in the same regard as some of my esteemed AZ colleagues, and that some people think highly of my game.
(i would have to disagree with it, considering my current state in pool, but it is still very flattering)

Even MORE flattering is that i, for the most part, remain anonymous, and still managed to make some lists without people knowing who i am.

So THAT in itself is a really nice compliment.
Thank you all.

And for the people who DO know who i am, and posted a response, an even bigger thanks.

As for the list...
I will have to ponder over this for a while before i post up a list, because honestly, i hadn't ever really thought about it before.

But i DO have a question for the N.Y. players who posted responses, but this can apply to all people who read this thread.
Are we making a distinction as to what game these guys are playing?

Personally, i have always divided N.Y. into 3 types of players.
Straight pool players, and 9-ball players, and obviously there are those who are extremely talented at both.

My question to you guys is, are you dividing up your fellow players according to any particular game, or are you basing your picks on overall talent.

Just wondering , and i don't mean to make things more complicated, but i know in my area, you have guys that play great One Pocket, who stink at 9 ball, and guys who play great 9 ball, who stink at straight pool, and guys who play great straight pool who don't really excel in the other two disciplines.

And there are just a FEW, who play ALL games well, and most of them, come from a different era than the current players.

Example. If we were to talk about straight pool in N.Y., i would have to throw Danny Barouty's name in there near the top of a list, but i would understand if someone didn't think his 9 ball game was that great, because i have always known Danny to Dislike 9 ball and not really respect it as a game, so i can see him not really putting his heart into it, like he would straight pool.
Know what i mean?

I was just wondering.

This is probably wrong and there are probably too many to mention.

Regarding Danny, we're talking about a guy who has a high-run of something like 264 (I'm probably wrong but it's somewhere near that). I can't imagine ANYONE happy to draw him in any game played on a pooltable unless it happens to be ping-pong (even then, I'd be concerned). With that said, Danny's distaste for 9-ball is no secret but that doesn't mean he can't play it. I know there are some well-respected players who can attest to this and some who have lost a nice sum because of this illusion.

Right. I see your point. Poor choice using him as an example, as he is a powerhouse force to be dealt with, but i think you understand my meaning.
Not everyone excels at every game. Wondering if that would make a difference towards some peoples lists.

Thanks for the info.

OMG I completely forgot about you when I made my top ten list:o For the record I certainly think someone who plays your speed would make the AZ top ten list. You might be a little more under the radar because you don't play alot of big time tournaments but for a non-pro you shoot jam up from what I've seen!
