I agree, those examples were the intentional use of deceptive tactics that fundamentally change the way the balls play, by means of the intentional application of foreign substances to the balls or chalk so as to make them play crazy. Cheating, pure and simple.
I used the word hustle because the core element of the hustle is deception, or trickery, hiding one's speed so as to take unfair advantage of a sucker, or perhaps someone who's just not paying attention.
How would you qualify the tables gamblers play on that have been fixed to play poorly, say with needles pushed deep into the rails at common areas used for banking? Or making one of the corner pockets a bit tighter than the others? Or making sure one of the facings in a tight corner pocket is somewhat curved? All these things and more can be intentionally set up by who ever redoes the cloth and rails on a table. Is that cheating?
I think it is...
The solution or the way to deal with all these and other "hustles" is to have your wits about you and to be sensitive to balls that don't roll right, tables whose rails are inconsistent and so on.
Is it possible to totally eliminate the hustles I mention? I suppose only in very special circumstances is it doable...
Here's another one that came to mind... How about just switching the game ball from another set of balls? Using a regular Aramith ball instead of a Super Aramith or a Centennial will change the cut angles, no doubt about it. How many players pay attention to that sort of thing? Not many, I bet...
Cheers!
