I think the likelihood of a good shot on the 6 after this breakout is being grossly overestimated. Try shooting the cue ball directly at the cluster a few times to see how much accuracy and speed control are needed - then take ball in hand and try the same thing caroming off the 5 any way you like. Then ask yourself how reliably you can do it with whatever shape you manage to get on the 5 in actual play.

Big difference. So, how do you KNOW what you are going to shoot will work?

Cutting the four ball into the corner will move the six and seven balls early in your run. Hitting the seven ball on the high side will push the six to the hole and still give you a shot on the five ball. If you don't shape after the break out, you can play safe on the five.

Or you could be a nit and play safe on the four ball like most players do today.

What game is John playing, please? Is he really suggesting shooting the 6 from basically where the 5 is?

I think the original shot is easy enough to hit two or 3 rails but past experience tells me having a shot after is low percentage. In a game situation you only get 1 chance. The question is do you feel lucky? Well do ya punk? LOL

Drawing into it is tricky and cutting the 4 in the corner on a tight pocket 9 footer is no bargain. I might try two rails but in reality I think the smart shot is position the c/b below the 5. Then carom off the 5 and break out the 6/7 leaving the 4 on the end rail. If I fail to get desired position below the 5, then I revert to plan B. :grin:

Oh sorry, I meant to say 5 on the end rail. I was thinking about the 4 ball and position on the 5 so I got them mixed up. If I'm below the 5 at a good angle a carom would bank the 5 to the end rail. With the c/b going into the 6/7.

I like this - it develops the 6 while leaving the 5 safe, and is an easier shot.

On table I use, the pockets are 4 1/2 inches wide. (two balls width). Therefore I have multiple contact points in which to "pocket the ball".

Not on yours? :rolleyes:

I was very specific in HOW I would attack this situation, including the exact english employed.

I was also specific in WHY I would attack this situation in that way (why I would break the 6B loose--off the 5B--to minimize risk in getting hooked behind the 7B).

Now you want everyone to state that they KNOW it will all work out as planned?!? No thanks, I'm human & subject to error.

Besides, this is a hypothetical situation that is bound to look different in real life. But never fear, I plan to set up the shot, in real life, tonight & record my findings.

Will I guarantee you that I can & will match my cuetable results...no.

Will I guarantee you that I will play out the options presented here & learn from my experiments...yes.
