What's your version of "The Perfect Pool Room"?

I have been reading all over the forums about the rise/fall of pool, poolrooms, gambling, tournaments etc. and was just wondering what people considered the perfect, or best poolroom to be.

So, if money were no object (let's say you're a millionaire that loves pool and wants to own a room or two), how would you design your room?

Please limit your responses to American rooms only. I know nothing of snooker etc. and how it works in other billiard-playing countries.

Now I know this is highly subjective, as one person's "best" could be another person's nightmare. For example, some people may love the "newer" glammed-up pool/restaurant/darts/poker/live band scenario...while others may relish in the smokey, hustler-filled rooms of yesteryear.

I would just like to know how you would make what YOU thought was the "perfect" room. Whether or not you want to have big-time tourneys there, or big-time gambling, or both...is up to you.

Another thing to add is...

Once you HAVE the perfect pool room...Would you support it?

I keep hearing about all these great pool rooms that close down and the players all say...

" Yeah, I used to go there. It was great. Action all the time. Haven't been there in years. I wonder what happened to the place?"
If you have the perfect pool room and never spend money there, or just "hang out" and expect others to support it, are you surprised they don't last long?

As a room owner, I always try and provide what the players want. Sometimes this is conveyed through requests and sometimes it is conveyed through their wallets. I am deliberately NOT leveling a certain pool table right now because of the action it gets. When it gets recovered and releveled all the action stops. So I keep it unlevel on purpose.

Also a good thing to remember is that wanting some things is illegal these days. Yeah, it might be nice to have topless rack girls that bring you free alcohol and give you backrubs and you dont have to tip them a nickel....but IT AIN"T GONNA HAPPEN. lol.

Good luck on your thread inside_english. I hope you get realistic responses. :grin-square:

a room where I could put my wife & kid into cryogenic sleep or a virtual reality coma so that when I'm done and un-freeze or unplug her to go home she thinks we've been spending quality time together spooning or watching chick flicks and she wants to go back everyday.

I'd have 3 sections

one area would be barboxes and have a few video games and an old fashioned milkshake/soda fountain. and it would be very kid friendly. and separated from the rest of the pool hall.

the largest section would have a few good quality 7 footers and a bunch of good 9 footers. with a full service bar and a cuesmith shop

the third section would be a VIP members only room with top of the line tables and name brand house cues. and its own bar.

as soon as I hit the powerball I'm building it.

Two most important factors for me would be smoke free, and a players club area where the music was kept at mellow volume levels and you couldn't see or hear the crazies bouncing off the walls in the next playing area. After that, I'd go along with whatever anyone else suggests. :)

I was thinking along these same lines, a separate VIP room away from the bangers would provide something for everyone.

Some great ideas there... I hope you do win the powerball.

Add a bar and a raised center seating and eating area seperated by a rail. That way you have a place to hook up for games or watch some good matches.

Billiards Den Richardson TX

The Billiards Den in Richardson TX(just north of Dallas) may be the best pool hall I have seen for today's world. They aren't the hardcore Ames type pool hall that I like to dream about but they have the variety to survive in today's world and possibly make money. Eight footers, a few nines, a snooker table, three cushion table, barboxes, darts, board games, a nice little grill, a bar, a pro shop, a private room, I'm sure more that I am forgetting. I made a couple trips through there in the daytime and it was conducive to shooting pool, it may be crazy at night I don't know.

The truth is that my idea of a perfect pool room includes one that will be there the next time I come and that means it has to show a profit. To do that in today's world a room owner is going to have to be smart and adaptable. The finest pool room I have seen in recent years was Diamond in Dallas. It was nonsmoking when I went there, good Diamond tables, raised viewing area for sweaters. No noisy music, bring your own bottle I believe, and they were prepared to go to members only to control the crowd. They were perfect except for one minor detail, they didn't have any way other than their own gambling to bring in enough revenue to support the place. The only food was a few snacks and I can't remember but I guess they sold soft drinks. No big ticket items and the pool tables were very reasonably priced. Heaven, but just not a sustainable business.

Give me a room with good food, moderate prices, low music, and good tables spaced far enough apart to play on and I am happy as long as it isn't too smoky. Perfection is a building in my backyard with a nine foot Diamond, a seven foot Diamond, and a six by twelve Riley snooker table. I'd put the music I listened to in the old country bars, honky-tonks, and nightclubs in the sixties and early seventies and pretend I was young and immortal again!
