I visited a non pool forum a while back. They had a For Sale section, much like the one here. In their FS section, a user could have their thread made into a sticky for a fee.

Meh on the whole tiered membership thing.
All it will do is breed discontent from the lower-tiered folks, especially if you take things AWAY from the current crowd. If you choose to ADD new stuff for the contributing members, chances are it will cost you more to do that than the money you would take in.
I think your planned server move to a more stable, faster machine will do the trick.

The reason why Yahoo, Google don't charge people for using their services is that they attract a huge users base. This is the rate on how they charge the folks that advertise on their web sites, per hit.
If they didn't offer their services for free their hits would be less everyday and less attractive to advertisers.
The way most informative web sites maker their money is through the advertisers. Aspirin should advertise here, Pizza, lots of things that we as readers might want to use other then pool related items.
Also another way to raise company funds is through promo wear, I would love to buy an AZ shirt,a mouse pad with drivermakers pic on it, funny catchy ones. "I wasn't banned 2005" I also would love to be at a show and see a AZ booth and buy promo gear and marketplace items right there.

Another idea.
I think in order to limit people using fake names and multiple names and starting trouble with an alias you can confirm identity. Just get a charge card and charge $1.00 to get a name on AZ Billiards. Now I know a lot of pool players don't have a dollar, but they can bum one off a buddy and use that one. And if company's want to use AZ billiards to sell merchandise the cue section can be a fee based system like Ebay. That way only people MAKING money on AZ billiards can be Paying for that privelege. That seems fair to me. Table listing $10. Cue listing $5 for under $1000. $10 for over $1000. You can even split the cue listings section into two price ranges. If you cant afford a $10 commission on a $1500 dollar cue....well? Just some random thoughts and ideas. I think keeping the price down will encourage more people to join and use this forum. Make it up in quantities. Just dont charge for whining, you wont know what to do with all that money.

I've thought about this for a while, so I'll throw it out there and bounce it off you guys.
When I go to big events, I often look for other AZers but don't know most of them when their standing right in front of me. I've met several of you guys in Vegas and Orlando and, of course, here in Texas and other places on the pro tourney trail.
How about T-Shirts with a nice AZ logo on the front and your personal AZ ID on the back. Or maybe polo type shirts with an AZ logo and your ID underneath. They could be made without the name for lurkers.
Either way, it would generate a small cash flow for the site.
I imagine a tourney in Vegas with lots of folks wandering around with AZ shirts, feeling like a community of friendly strangers. "Oh, there's Purdman, that lucky SOB and who's that? Williebetmore. I never realized that guy with the accent was Colin Colenso."
Even better, they could be worn around the local halls and smaller tourneys to help promote the best damn pool site on the net!
