When did we start jumping and who did it first?

Get tired of hearing "in the old day's we did not use that Hollywood-jump-shit-cue. You should curve around the ball or use the cushions. Jumping should be banned" ......

When did you see someone jumping a ball, in a proper way of course, the first time ? Was fun to see Earl jump in 88' with his break stick, but is there any veterans around here which could "beat" 88' ? Who, When and whit a dedicated jump stick?

I bet the concept of jumping is older than the concept of masse shots.

I wonder when they decided that shooting under the ball to force a jump was illegal.

Earl jumped a ball and made the shot in the Caesars Tahoe Finals in 1983. It was against Steve Mizerak. He was using his playing cue. I've got the match on DVD. PM me for a copy.

This was the first time I saw a jump shot successfully executed in a major tournament.

I was just going to say Earl (in a finals with his regular cue), but I thought it was that thing (La Open?) they played at the Burbank Marriot about the same time. I remember seeing him doing it and just being WTF was that?

The L.A. Open was in 1992, much later.

83'... That was about the same time when I saw a pool table on summer vacation, 11 years old :D

I have a copy of "Super Cue Men" starring Jimmy Caras and Willie Mosconi and one shot in the video had Mosconi performing a jump shot that started on one table and completed a shot on another table.

But I guess you wanted to know when the jump shot was first used in a tournament.

Yupp yupp, the first match would be nice to know, so I can stop the mouth on some of these so called old timers who claims "In the good old days....:" :D

WOW Barbara you're right...I saw that one too!!! I've been tryin' for years to find that black&white clip again...some people think I'm hosin' them when I describe it....

What I should really do is get a DVD made from the VHS tape.

Does anyone know where I can have that done?

Video Editing

I would be happy to make a pro DVD for free if this is of interest. I have full video editing capabilities and a pro A/D converter to get it in to my Mac.
But note my location. PM me if this is of interest.

If not you could couple a VHS machine to a stock DVD recorder and have it done on the go. This would be with the DVD recorders stock start menu and no other features.

I don't think I'm what you would call an old timer (I'm in my 40's), but I remember players talking about and using the jump shot when I was growing up. IMHO the jump shot has been around for quite a while. Whether high profile players were employing the technique in major tournaments is another matter.

Just my .02: I'm one of those who thinks the jump cue should be banned. Maybe it's just the way I was brought up to see the game. Special "jump cues" just seem like cheating to me.

I'll bet the very first jump shot was done by a caveman (or cavewoman) playing with a stick and a rock on a piece of exposed slate down by the creek....

The first person I heard of jumping, and this was before it became normal in tournaments, was Sammy Jones, jumping with a shaft.

Partner jump shots most likely go back as pool. I have some old vedio footage of Mosconi making a Jump Shot from one 10 ft table to another and making five balls in different pockets. I think it shot in the 1940's as part of a trick shot demonstration but it was a jump shot!!

Now in the old days, there was no such thing as a jump cue. Players only used their playing cue during the old days.
