When did you start playing?

I guess "The Hustler" got a lot of us. My parents got us a pool table in 1962 when I was 10. My brother, age 15, and my father and I would spend hours in the "rec room" playing on that old Sears table.
45 years later, I still love the game, and although I spend a lot of time teaching it, I still spend a lot of time learning as well. It's a game nobody can ever master, which is why it appeals to me so much. There's always something new to learn.

Well... I'm a geezer. In 1954 I was 11 and played some at the YMCA. Then started hanging at the ph and skipping school. Everybody in my life was screaming at me to stay away from the ph (pool starts with p which rhymes with t which stands for TROUBLE) but I couldn't stay away. In 1959 I got a car and that was the end of my pool for about 40 years. Played maybe 50 games through out those 40 years and in 1999 got a table. In 2002 I got my Diamond and nothing has been the same since. I'm obsessed.

I started at about age 4 my grandfather had a table and we would go there every week. When I showed a interest my grandfather made me a bench to carry around the table. 45 years later still playing and got the pool bug as bad as ever.

Paranoia is nothing but 100% awareness........

I just celebrated my 65th birthday & have been playing for less than a year. The game is so complex that I wish I had started 60 years ago, however the discourse on this listserv along with books has accelerated my learning curve. I hope to find an opportunity to take lessons soon.

I guess I played my first game when I was about 7 or 8 at the local university my dad is a professor at, maybe 5-6 times total. I played maybe once or twice a year and always wanted to learn more. When I was 18 (late 2003, Decemberish) I was a freshman at the same university I played my first games. I spent a lot of time in the student union playing and when I hurt my back playing soccer I started practicing regularly. I am a pretty dern competitive person with a large amount of coordination so it was natural that when I lost to some B players at school I had to beat them. I watched other players play and really learned everything I could, just practicing alone for hours and hours and hours. Now they can't touch me :D Had back surgery and that allowed me to play longer. I got my degree in May and have been practicing 4-6 hours a day. Now I am really improving quickly and am ready to take on the world haha almost.......... I just wish I had discovered this game when I was young, real young.

Eric.

My Uncle had me on a 10" snooker table....
