When do you think a player is considered a good player?

i think if you can beat the 9ball ghost on an easy table you are for sure a very good player.also if you can run 100 at 14.1 you are a very good player.but if someone tells me i beat the 9ball ghost 8ahead in 4 hours,and somebody else says i run 100 within say 15 tries each day ,i know whos the better player not 14.1 player but just a better pool player. also if you took a guy and put him on a deserted island and taught him how to play 14.1 for 7 years and he ran hundred balls fairly consistent but never showed him 9ball.then the other player you taught 9ball and he beat 9ball ghost with ease but never showed him 14.1.now they meet and the 14.1 player tries his game and vice versa.heres what i think would happen ,the 14.1 player in about a week would be beating the 9ball ghost.the 9ball player it would take a year or so to run any where near a hundred .he would get so frustrated that the 14.1 player could run hundreds and beat the 9ball ghost with ease and he could not.then the 9ball player would really get mad when the14.1 guy woofs at him and says lets play 9ball and 14.1 and the loser has to move off the island lol.thats my two cents .wow that took me like twenty minutes to type that

yes that would be fair to say.its a good thing i can not type fast because i would probably end up getting myself in hot water on here.i read so many things that are so wrong about pool or the pool industry .i say wrong ,i dont mean wrong in my opinion i mean wrong because im at the tourneys ,i know the players personally ,and i read so much stuff that is so uninformed it cracks me up. i should be practicing for reno but i cant ive pulled a muscle in my ribs golfing and i can barely breathe right now,oh well its my fault for golfing right before the tourney.

Most of us would NOT agree that it is a good thing - we are very appreciative of ANY time you spend communicating here.

As you so correctly pointed out; all communications from the pro's receive special attention from the anonymous trolls of the board. Please don't consider that "hot water"; those people are to be IGNORED. It is just one of the minor annoyances of posting on the board - the benefits are so great that it is well worth it for most of us (and we hope you as well).

Please continue to correct the uninformed reports - we appreciate it.

You are one very funny fellow. Where do you come up with this stuff anyway? I especially like the desert island twist. I have a picture in my head of two guys in shorts only, on a deserted beach, with a pool table. LOL

One thing we all know for sure: You ARE a good pool player!

Hey dude, you have been looking forward all year to these IPT events. And I think you scored in the first one. Stay focused, take Motrin or whatever. Gut it out, play your game and see what happens. You can beat more than half these guys at 80% speed. And you know it!

I'm curious, John, about when your 14.1 game really developed.

I watched you play 10-ball at Hardtimes once about 8 years ago, You were John from (Bakersfield?). You were with a group of friends and trying to make a game with Marcuc C. I think he would only play for a dime, and you guys had 6 cents ;-). Anyway, you worked it out and you got the 8-ball in an ahead set of 10-ball. After bouncing around for a few hours, you caught a gear and won the set. Then you won a second set.

So if we take *then* (1998 or 1999) as one point in time,

and we take the stick-breaking Sigel match as a second point in time

and we take now as a third point in time,

how would you say your 14.1 game compared to your 9-ball game at these times. When did you really learn to play 14.1? You haven't been stuck on an island have you?

I can only say what I think a good player is based on the game of 9 ball. I know that one pocket and straight pool uses alot more knowledge, but I have played and seen alot more 9 ball than these other 2 disciplines. A good player in 9 ball can beat the 9 ball ghost consistently. A great player in 9 ball can beat the 10 ball ghost ( or higher). There are many players out there that cannot beat the 9 ball ghost, but they are smart gamblers.....big difference between good and smart.
