When do you think a player is considered a good player?

Waht about the runs that can run 9ball racks consistantly but cant make a 50 ball run on 14.1 ..9 ball and straight is very different....

I look at people's patterns. How are they moving their ball around? Are they controlling the cueball? If they are consistently playing the right side of the ball and playing good patterns, and still pocketing the object ball, then I consider them good players.

Even sometimes if they are not pocketing the balls, but trying to play the right patterns with the right speed, it shows they are knowledgeable and maybe having a bad night, and I still consider them a 'good' player.

A persons perception of a good player changes as he gets better himself. But over all I think a player is considered good when they can control the cueball and are capable of getting out. I think 100+ in straight pool is WAY to high to be considered good. Hell...I think if you can run 1 rack you are a good player. C players are good players. It depends who you are comparing them to. If your comparing to the general public than running a rack in any game is looked upon as awesome. Anyways a good player is just a guy that knows how to play IMO.

When you start beating people you have labled Good Players.

Good Point! There is not a lot of motivation to play 14.1.

It all depends on the person's perception. Someone who you think is good may not be in someone else's perspective.

Ahh.. So the banger that can't run three balls, but consistently can find a sucker who will spot him every ball, and therefore wins all the time, and is always in action, is a good player? I know lots of players that pick tourney spots for the weakest caliber competition possible, and also never match up with less than the nuts + 2 balls.

I don't really consider those guys good players. But then again, I tend to be from the side of the tracks where I say you should be playing for the joy and challenge of the game, not for the money. I do gamble, but the money doesn't really have anything to do with anything.

In my small neck of the woods I've always thought good players were the ones who show up, play, and are consistent. Doesn't always have to be the one that shoots every shot perfect, just the ones that get out when they are supposed to. The ones that will run a runnable rack, the ones that play safe when its the best choice, the ones who stay calm when things don't go just right and come up with a answer to the problem. The ones where you mention their name and no one speaks bad about how they play.

I know people who have a lot of natural skill, far more than I will ever have, who are not good players. And I know people who have little natural skill, but work at it until they become known as a good player.

I think it differs in what part of the country your from. Go to the north east and say "I'm a great player cause I ran 100"......the rack boy will laugh at you then put a 150 on you for fun.

I could run 3 or 4 racks of 9ball and not even run a 50 at one point. then I learned to play 14.1, ran 50's every day.....then tried to play 1 pocket...uggg! I thought I could play!

I think a player can hold his own at any game, make smart bets, and realize they can't play a lick with the big boyz!!!!

who said find a sucker to give him a big spot?i said get a spot,give a spot,play in tournaments,ya know,mix it up.have a good attitude and be a decent person also.that is what i consider a good player.i'am not talking about playing and robbing someone who can't play and has more money then god.where i play,some consider me a good player,and some not.i am probably an a player.i play all games,from banks ,to snooker.i play in open tournaments,handicapped.where ever i can.i have always tried to get better and play good competition.i know champions that won't play anyone there own speed,and they are considerd good players also.i know of the people you talked about that search out week tournaments to win the quick cash.i guess if thats how you make your eating money,you do whats best for you.heck ,i have driven 13 hours to play in a tournament with the best in the country,do i have a chance to win,probably not,but i sent a couple to the other side of the chart.made me feel like i play pretty good to me,but probably not to efren,lol.if you want a simpile definition,imo.when you can consistently cash in major national tournaments,different games would be nice but either way,i would say you are a damn good player.i know if i could do that i would feel like i play pretty well.just a players opinion.maybe in derby we can play and see if we can come to are own definition of a good player?lol.just kidin,i might need a little somthing.lol.just kidin again.don't mean to offend.just having fun,after all ,isn't that what its all about?

Excellent! This is more like it. IMHO, a player has to step up to an acceptable level of competition before they can even be considered a "good player". After they step should be when we have the debate as to what constitutes a good player. Like you said, I know lots of guys who can play jam up when they play a very weak player, but they can't play their speed when playing a better player.

Wasn't tryin' to dog your post, just asking for a clearer definition.. Now that you've clarified that the person has to step up to the plate, it's all copasetic!
