When was the pool table invented ?

As I understand it, pool was originally an indoor alternative to croquet in the royal residences of Western Europe. When I went on a tour of Hampton Court Palace near London, I learned from the tour guide that it had a pool table in the early sixteenth century. It must have been one of the first ever pool tables, but it can't have been THE first.

I’d bet if you had a picture of a tournament from back then you’d be in the front row 😬

Joe Pepitone invented the first pool table in 1857, a few years before he built Central Park so the Northern Army could practice fighting on grass.

Its been many years since I went through the Billiard Encyclopedia, I remember a painting of angles in the clouds playing on a table that had pockets. That painting dated from the late 1400's

If I ever get done with a brake job on the wife's car I would like to see if I could find it again.
Of course my hands may not be clean enough to go into that book for several days;)

Just a few pics from Stein and Rubino's fabulous "The Billiard Encyclopedia."

Next. How did the “pool room” get its name?
Exploring the historical origins .

The first pool table was built by Fred "Chisel" Gandy. It was in the stone age and his wife wanted a coffee table, so he built her one ,and he put a rail around it, so that when he was drunk , he didn't knock his beer off.
The pool room was originally called the piss pool . It's where all the men went to relieve themselves, and hang around bullshitting each other ,so they didn't have to go home to a nagging wife . Fred "Chisel" Gandy's wife kept complaining about the coffee table he made ,and he didn't want to waste it, so they started playing games on it, at the piss pool. When winter came, it got too cold to be down there , so they built a building around it and called it the piss pool room, that was too long , so it became pool room. Also , that was the beginning of the word chiselers
I am sure Rubino and Stein knew this information , they probably left it out because it is part of the grand conspiracy against history, or the Mandalla Effect.

I think I have a reference somewhere in da library but my recollection is that it was something about a billiard room and guys would go there and “pool” their money to bet on horses.

or sumthin’ like that
I think that's backwards, Lou.

I believe the poolroom, in which, as you indicate, betting pools pertaining to horse racing were established and managed, predates the game of pool by many centuries.

Once tables were placed in the poolroom, the game of leisure played on them came to be known as pool.

Yes, how I remember reading years ago.
Betting rooms for pooled betting were called pool rooms.
After pool tables found their way in, the rooms where pool was played became poolrooms.
