Maybe someone knows the vendor that’s at the super billiards expo or you can look at the list of vendors. There is a guy that’s been there every year for as long as I can remember that sells exotic wood blanks

Been going through a lot of it to convert into flooring for the billiard room.....

Especially the short, scrap, & excess stuff.

Acording to the forum rules... "Supply sources can be asked for, but all replies should be sent in the form of Private Messages. This protects our cuemakers supply sources from the general public. Almost no industry shares their wholesale sources with their customer base. So in fairness to our cuemakers we ask that this type of information be handled through Private Messages."

Are those ebony boards,

Yes, Gabon ebony

and if so are you selling?

As stated above, really am making flooring borders for the billiard room, what i've been doing the past week.
So when the subject came up here on AZB at the same time, i just had to chime in. Sorry! :)

About done that part now. When i was a kid we had a coal bin and coal furnace, my job was to keep it going.
Machining ebony always feels about like being back working in a coal bin. 528 ebony squares later.....

If you are appalled, counting waste it only took about 4 to 5 board ft of mostly the lesser materials some not shown in that previous post.
Need to keep the bigger stuff for furniture and for other floor jobs.

Most of these sources are available to the public to begin with. Even less are traditional wholesalers like we saw 15-20 years ago. Especially with the influx of hobbyists turned furniture makers and the growth through social media like youtube etc.

I certainly don’t want to see cuemakers struggle to source quality woods but I think the landscape of the market is different than eras past.

Gatekeeping sources isn’t something I’m a fan of. No offense to anyone just my opinion.

I’d like to see more up and coming cuemakers source things as easily as possible.

There were sources like bad dawg burls that didn’t make it because the market demand wasn’t there. Hoarding sources isn’t great commerce if you ask me.

I used to mostly agree with Bishop especially because niche makers of any product tend not to be able to get professional discounts or buy at the larger jobbers who sell volume to the trade anyway. However, these days, the big places have started to have some accommodation & lower minimums for smaller buyers of exotic/niche products themselves. What i've noticed is that once true lumber wholesalers to the trade only with fairly high minimums, (500 bd ft, say of commodity lumber, or sometimes one full piece minimum "exotic" if you were a regular customer or placed a decent order of some other material) now often have an off-shoot store where their scrap is converted into turning squares, cue blanks and pen blanks and sold to joe public one piece at a time. Or even sawing big planks up into smaller pieces because retail makes it higher value. That behavior is a little harder to encourage :)

Everyone who asks to join AZB checks off the box "I agree to follow the rules set down by the administrators of AZB." It doesn't say "I agree to follow the rules that I agree with." So if you can't live up to your pledge or don't like the rules, there are other forums to join.
