Just to contrast Hard Times from Rack N' Cue, Hard Times tournament side, (the right side tables separated by a partition) has tight tables. All tables at hard times are 4X8, this is both true and misleading. You have two different surface dimensions of 4X8. On the left side of hard times, the regular gold crowns are the big surface 4X8's on the right the smaller ones. So there are no true full length tight tables at Hard Times. Also you have to take the atmosphere into consideration, if your take the game super serious, and don't mind people lurking (literally) around the corner waiting to see if they want to ask you to play for money, nobody really talks, laughs, and generally nobody seems to be having a good time on the tournament side of the hall at hard times. If thats what your looking for, a hardcore pool experience, than hard times is for you. Rack n Cue on the other hand is quite different, its a younger asain crowd, some can play, most arent too good. Its a much lighter atmostphere, and I actually like playing on full 4X8 tables with deep shelf tight pockets (almost like diamond, but not quite that deep). Nobody is there trying to make a game and arguing about the spot over your shoulder for 20 mins while you are trying to shoot. However, on any given night at hard times, you can see recognizable pros, some world class as well. So choice is yours, oh and Hard Times is alcohol free.

Hard Times has always had 9' Gold Crowns! And a couple of 6x12 Snooker tables also for the Golf games. Maybe the only two in LA.

Lol, the tourny tables are 9 foot???? IIIII dont think so jay, but ill check it out. No disrespect, I just don't think they are 9 footers. And the tourney tables are definitely smaller than the regular tables.

They are 9-footers. They just look small b/c of the great lights.
There are no 46 by 92's at HT.

Ok well see, im going to go check it out. But id bet good money that that isnt right. But I actually hope your right, id play there more. But there is just no way in h e double hockey sticks that your right.

Jay will bet you right now, 10 to 1 odds with any cash you have that ALL of those tournament tables are 50 by 100's.
Those are all 9 footers.

How much would you like to bet?

A 9' table should have a playing surface that is 50" x 100".

Did you say you wanted to bet $100? And I say ALL the Gold Crowns at Hard Times are nine footers.

Considering ive never actually measured them, im going to hold pissing contest bets until im sure.
How in the world did you get the idea they are 8 footers?
The 3-cushion tables are 10 footers.
The Big Berthas are 12 footers.
Bar boxes there are the real bar boxes.

Froooom the way the look, the outer tables might be 9's but I just don't know about the tourney tables, but like I said ill find out for sure, come back, and if im wrong, ill ignore this thread. LOL.

Well you can ask Steve/pootable mechanic here who used to replace their cloths.
Or you can just believe Jay who has decades of tournament directing experience. And has played a ton of games at HT. Downstairs and upstairs.
Joey~Wonders where Jay made more money at HT. Downstairs or upstairs?~:D

This bet is getting smaller all the time. I'll settle for dinner sometime. :)
And Joey gets to come too!

I dont know about one-pocket, but virtually all 8 ball tournies around here LA/OC are an absolute joke. The races are just absurdly short. One place in pasadena I went to, was kinda shady, wasn't really impressed and again the races were a joke, race to 3 winners side, race to 1 losers. Heres an example:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey RunoutalloverU,

Sorry it took me a while to reply. Double elimination, race to 2 on the A side and one game on the B side. Standard BCA rules except 8-ball on the break is a win, 8-ball+scratch on the break is a loss. Alternate break. The pool hall gives us 7 9x4.5 tables, most of which are Gold Crowns. Nappy run down cloth and dead rails= a whole lotta FUN! Free practice at 7pm with the tourny starting at 8:30. Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks, Asgar

8-Ball Tourny in SoCal!
If any of you are in the area, I run a weekly tourny on Thursdays. Location is Charles Billiards in Glendale. Free parking and free table time starting at 6:00pm, tourny starts at 8:00pm. $15 entry includes a drink from the bar. Great people and a great room, some pretty good food too.

But if your into hot middle eastern chicks, it might not be that bad, lol.

You are probably talking about Jake's in Pasadena which is not a shady place at all. Great staff and a friendly crowd of regulars.

The equipment does leave a lot to be desired, but at least they are Gold Crown III's.

Hard Times is and always has been all 9-footer Gold Crown's tournament and funsy side.

In addition, they do have 2 Gabriel's Billiard Tables, 2-Brunswick 6x12 snooker tables and 3-Valley seven footers.

Now that you've said the name it was Jakes. The place itself wasn't bad, its just the people in there at time seemed to be less than desireable, and there was almost no lighting, so maybe that added to ambiance of seedy. And as far as the tables at good ol hard times, looks like im behind on the opinion poll.

danny k's is very nice with great people and tables, the pockets are bigger than you want. with all it's advantages however, they will be neutralized if you happen to play a guy named scotty morgan in the tournament.

if you want tight pockets and MORE scotty morgan type people, hop on the 91 west for 20 minutes and exit bellflower and go to hard times, which has tight pockets just like you like them.

I'm thinking that this is the Hard Times annex of the one in Sacramento. If so, then that's perfect. I've been to the one in Sac often and usually play in the action tables at the back. I hope the one in SoCal will be the same.

Just wondering, what's scotty morgan's speed or for that matter, what are the typical speeds of the Hard Times players on a weekday night. I'm a small to medium type action player, $50 - $500, per set player for a race to 5 to 11 on 9 or 10-ball; and a $20 - $100 per game in 1P depending on the action. I'm from the SF Bay Area and I have a 110 speed in USPPA ratings. With regular practice, I can beat our local pros here in the likes of George Michaels, Deo Alpajora, Amar Kang, Tony Chohan etc. in open tourneys.

Runoutalloversomeone,

Add my vote that the tournament tables at H/T are 9 footers :) I also will bet whatever you want!!!

Re. Jakes, the tables suck, no room between them, the lights suck. But they get a good turn out on Tues. nites. They are currently remodeling the place and hopefully they will upgrade the lights.

Re. Charles, the tables suck, the floor is sloped througout the building, so it is higher on one end of the table than the other. The owners will ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS charge you more than the time you use on a table!!! It is amazing that their Thurs nite tourney gets 30 - 40 people

most of the time there will be half a dozen A players and a pro or two practicing or just hanging out, but it really varies on the night. a 110 speed shouldnt have any trouble holding his own, just be careful. there are a bunch of unknown guys in the area that shoot strong.

Its funny you mention the overcharging. I have had that happen every single time I've been to the House of Billiards on Wilshire. Last time I was there I had to watch the guy behind the counter talk on the phone for 10-15 minutes while I stood there trying to turn in a rack of balls. I finally had to interrupt him and tell him I was going to be late. No apology, no comment to the person on the phone about having to help a customer...just complete indifference

At least he is consistent though.
