Ok so it hasn't been long that I have picked my cues back up and have been researching and playing. When I was in my prime it was all about Nick Varner, Siegel, strikland. I see Mike is now making cues, Earl is getting fired from Cuetec and Nick has a new cue line. I own a couple of Nick's and they are quite nice as productions go. He was my pool idol back then. I just wanted to know if he is still playing etc? Anyone know?

Nick had some health issues a few years ago that kept him from being competitive. Since then, he has gotten his health back and travels the country promoting his cue line and plays in a few tournaments. He recently had a decent showing at the US Open, and I believe he beat some good players. I know one thing, if Nick Varner ever gets back in stroke he will be a contender for sure.

"Nick may be small But he is a GIANT with that Cue in his hand" Steve Mizerak on Nick Varner 1989 men's 9 ball Championship.

I just talked to him tonight. He is headed to North Carolina to play in in Shannon's big event (one pocket and ten ball tourn.) He travels so much it is unbelievable. Hustling his cues, cases, etc. and doing exhibitions. He works extremely hard to try and make a good living.

I just saw him maybe a week ago, he was through my area with his cases and folders of cues. I think the best thing I've heard him say goes like this:

-after running a few racks of 9 ball in practice, friend of mine says...-

"Hey Nick, looks like you're knocking off the rust."

"Yeah, but even my rust is spectacular."

Wow I wish he would come through here (Santa Rosa Ca.) Last time I saw him was at Executive Billiards in Redwood City Ca. back in 1989. That hall isn't even there anymore. He was showing people how to stroke on a snooker table corner to corner. I would love to see him again!

nick is a good guy

Somewhere back there, seems Nick went to the Phillippines to play Efren in some kind of challenge match; (maybe like Earl did in Hong Kong) He wound up beating Efren.....When Efren was interviewed and asked why he lost ...(wasn't Efren playing well?)...Efren said, "I played GOOD......but he NEVER MISSED.."

I saw him at the ICCS show in KC & he looked great. He's a true gentleman of the game.

He had a good showing at the US Open and won the NC Senior Open in Raleigh 2-3 weeks ago.

He played Luat this year. Luat got to the hill first, but couldn't get over. Nick came back and won the set.

Always a threat, in any event he plays in.

watching Nick vs. Siegel on accustats convinced me to learn to break from the side rail.

I think it was the 1991 US OPEN. They broke from the side rail, and made the corner ball on 21consecutive breaks. Siegel had Varner 10-3 and corner hooked.... and lost 11-10. Nick never gave up, and never gave MS another decent shot.

The IPT chose him to lead a team at the ProAm that occured a week ago. In the madness of a 128 player field, I failed to get a chance to sweat his match.

Nick Varner owns and operates Nick Varner Cues & Cases http://www.nickvarner.com
promoting his line of cues and billiard supplies. He also is title sponsor of The Great Southern Billiard Tour.

Nick will be competing in The Players Championship at King Street Billiards in Fayetteville, NC the week of November 18-23, 2008.

You can check him out on ustream.tv this week / weekend.

Coop, is the event to be live steamed? If so, will they show the one-pocket starting Thursday? Do you happen to have a URL for this?

Thanks, podna~ Doc

I have a Joss Cue that was made for Nick back in the mid 80's....right on the top of teh forearm next to the joint it says.."Joss Cue made for World Champion Nick Varner"....I am looking to sell if interested=)
I'll e-mail you some pics if you like....
Nick is one of the best ever to hold a cue.

Hey 1on1,

You know Nick pretty well, and I think his one pocket is his best game, what does he think his best game and what does he like to play. I know one of his road partners that you know pretty well, is another that I think one pocket is his best game too.;)

Ken

I'd say Nick's greatest game is.....all of them.

If he had a "weaker" game it would be straight pool, but, umm...he is still a World Champion in that discipline as well. Sheesh...

Greatest all-around player EVER in my book.
