Where to find 14.1 players?

I recently picked up straight pool again after several years away. I've never been very good at it (more below), but I enjoy the game and the different angles from which it causes me to look at a pool table. I've also noticed improvement in areas that I can bring to my play in other games.

When I played before, I had an standing weekly straight pool appointment with a friend of mine, and I stopped when our situations changed and we weren't able to continue getting together.

As far as my skill level goes, my high run before I left was 23, but I haven't run a whole rack since returning about a month ago. It's pretty much a given that I'll miss the shot before the key ball (i.e. if there's only 3 balls left on the table, I'll miss it even if it's a straight in stop shot -- It's definitely a mental thing). Mostly, though, I think my issue is that I play alone when it comes to straight pool, because the people I know are much more interested in 8 and 9 ball. I've always had focus issues playing anything alone... it just doesn't feel like it matters.

So how do I go about finding a person or two to play with? There aren't any 14.1 leagues in my area. In a perfect world, there'd be a fan of the game around who plays it well so I could learn from them, and doesn't mind shooting with a beginner, but I'd really be happy just to find anyone who'd like some straight pool on a regular basis. Any ideas? Also, if anyone here is in my general region, I'd love to shoot with you.

I wonder, ( this is directed to forum admins) Could we start a Sticky, with "sub-folders". Each subfolder would be named by a State, and within each of those folders folks from the same state could find each other? :scratchhead:
 
3andStop, that sounds like a great idea.

It seems like us straight pool players are a dying breed, but i am doing everything i can think of to try and make have a resurgance !

I know several others have started state associations like mine, those are a good resource. pete way in colorado for example.

maybe we should get a database of these orgs? I know Kevin's 14and1.com has a good amount of exposure

I think it would be a great idea to have a place to connect within the same state for 14.1 players. I'm in the same boat as many who love the game but simply can't find anyone who will play anything but 8,9,10 ball anymore. Grady's in SC was supposed to have a straight pool league but, i never heard anything about it in quite awhile. Love to play somone in SC where I don't have to drive more than 2 hours one way!

Big Daddy's in Glen Burnie (near Marley Station Mall) has a straight pool league. We play every Thursday night. There are various skill levels from "never run a rack" to regular 60 ball runners. Might be a little hike for you but definitely lots of competition. It's been going for several years with about 30 players.

This session is wrapping up shortly and I'm not sure but the next one probably starts in August.

There's a big straight pool event coming up June 27/28th at Big Daddy's. Should be some big names playing but we'll have to wait and see.

What time do they start on Thursday nights? Getting out there after work may not be feasible with the traffic around here, but I'd like to try it if I can.

It officially starts at 7:30 though there are usually a couple of matches that start early. The schedule is pretty lax as long as you coordinate ahead of time with whom you are scheduled to play. All matches for the whole session are pre-arranged at the beginning of the session. You play anywhere from 8 matches to (more likely) 12-14 depending on how many players are in your bracket.

The players are ranked (fairly accurately) from 50 to 165. The C bracket goes from about 50-80, B from 80 to 100 and A from 100-165. Matches are played to your handicap number.

Yes, you are correct...I'm sending my entry in this week....errrrr....perhaps you were talking about some of the OTHER big names like those that played 2 years ago.....Grady, Mike Davis, Thorsten, Mika, Danny Harriman, Steve Lipsky, Danny Barouty, Betmore.......damn, that's a LOT of good players (and one not so good, readers will have to figure it out for themselves). I do remember Peter Burroughs made it to the final 16, too cool (he choked like a dog, he was a big favorite over Thorsten).
