where to get shaft wood?

I bought 100 a few months ago. I threw out 50. A few more will probably go after the first cut.

Does that mean they are good or bad? I expect you guys are pretty picky. What would be a reasonable expection.

Not being a smartass, I just think we would want you to throw out 50 so it would onlyt the best of best.

Not if have already paid top dollor for the best of the best selected shafts. Some may be a little better then others but most should be useable for something anyway, even if you got a little screwed.

Anyone in the south east have a doweling machine? May know a source for NM hardrock, but they only sell roughs by the truck load. From what I was told, they do no business with any cuemakers, but I have not seen the quality or how the logs are sawn. Greg
Cue Components isn New Smyrna Beach has one. I have one that is not hooked up I might be willing to sell. You can see it on my shop tour at the below website. It takes 440V 3 phase power which I do not have and have not had it rewired for 220V three phase and bought a converter yet.

Chris, I was more less willing to pass the info on to someone with the meens to mill the stuff, in hopes they would sell me a few dowels if the source turns out to be worth while. I don't require much shaft wood, so purchasing 13000 ft of board is not an option for me at the time, but I will keep that dowel machine in mind if you still have It when We make the move, and have built the larger shop. You have sold me a few of your better shafts before, and helped Me with other projects, If you want the info, I'll pass It on, so you can check it out for Yourself, no strings or anything. I know you have your source, but Just PM Me If you want to talk with them, and I'll give you more info. I believe the wood comes from around the same area that yours comes from, but I only briefly talked with them, so you would have to talk with them about what they have. Think they have been in bussines since the early 1900's, and were originally located in the area the wood came from, so I figure their sources may be decent, but just speculation at this point.

Some people build those phase converters, seems like I saw plans for sale on ebay. That info may even be available online somewhere at no cost.

Thanks Greg

50% before the first cut is a little high. Dowels are very hard to grade untill you take a cut on them. It is not unusual for me to cull 50% or more but usually it is after I make the first cut or two. I am guessing that I will end up with 25 shafts out of this batch of 100. When I grade wood I work to one set of criteria. Either it is good enough to go into a cue or it goes in the trash. I use the same wood in all my cues regardless of if it is a sneaky pete or a high end inlayed cue.

i have to agree with the others about the attitude....take the time and effort like others have to do research some yourself....BUT if you want soem shaft blanks look at either atlas>>>they are okay or www.cuecomponents.com..i also have a few other sources too...you can email me at huffcues@yahoo.com if you dont see what you want at either of thsoe places and i will try to help some...but you have to be nice>>>>LOL

Shaft Wood Source

TRY SCHMELKE. I PURCHASED 50 SHAFTS FROM THEM RECENTLY AS A TRIAL RUN AND THEY WERE ALL OK. ALSO BOUGHT 50 SHAFTS, BLANKS 1" IN DIAM, FROM A "WELL KNOWN" SUPPLIER AND THEY WERE 50% JUNK ON THE FIRST TURN. I WOULD SUGGEST PURCHASING ONLY 1sT TURN SHAFTS AS THE SCRAPPAGE IS CUT DOWN DRAMATICALLY.

I bought 20 of Shmelkie's #1 blanks about 9 or 10 months ago and never got a good one out of the batch. Lots of suger and grain run-out with the ones they sent me. Also, on the 50 dowells that I got from Bell Forest, I culled 28 before making my first pass. After the first pass I'm down to 17 and a number of those don't look like they are going to make it. A little suger here and there but not bad but the grain run-off is bad on most of them.

Shaftwood

Greetings,

Preselected and graded shaftwood is available from Arnot-Q. Arnie can be reached at 561-439-0441. Tell Arnie, Larry recommended you give him a call.

Good Luck

I agree that not many will appreciate the way the post was made but he has a point , this is a forum called "Ask the cue maker" , although I guess it's not called "cuemakers divulging their suppliers" . Maybe the forum could have a suppliers list - or would that be considered unpaid advertising ?

Having said that , he should have waited more than 1 day before getting abusive about it , and if he already knows Atlas and Cuesmith I don't know what the hell his hurry is . By the way , you guys are lucky in the States being able to buy shaft dowels/blanks . I have to go to the timber supplier , lug a chunk (3-4metre board) home and start from there . Fortunately I use mostly ash and it's a little easier to read by the board than maple (IMO)

Shaft Wood

HI:

YOU MIGHT TRY QUE COMPONENTS. THEY HAVE A SHAFT GRADE TILTLED
"PRIVATE RESERVE". IF THE SCRAP RATE IS LOW THE HIGHER PRICE MIGHT BE WORTH THE DIFFERENCE. AS A SIDE NOTE THEIR DOWELLING BLANKS ARE NOT THE BEST BUT THEIR 1sT AND 2nd TURN SHAFTS ARE NOT BAD. AS YOU ALL KNOW WITH HIGHTOWER AND SCHMELKE THEY KEEP THE BEST FOR THEMSELVES. CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!!!!!!!!

I bought some of cc's "private reserves" off of ebay. The grain = snake tracks....sidewinder kind....one out of the lot was good, the others were very poor.

Hello,
I had you confused for Joel Hercek (his user name is qmakr). Just out of curiosity, what is your name?

Tracy <~~~That's me :)

Hi Tracy:

My name is Bob Flynn. I use QMAKER as a moniker as that is what is on my license plate (California).

I received crap from them.
So did a friend of mine.
Private stock, baseball bat, all that story was all b.s.
We sent them back.

Funny thing, me too! Part of the learning curve I guess. I'm beginning to believe that there are seldom bargains with top grade shaftwood.

I found the guy at cuecomponents to be the most arrogant smuck I've ever had the mispleasure of attempting to deal with - Not once did he reply to a single email of roughly 10 I sent him over an 8week period .
I then carelessly bought some shaft blanks off him on Ebay .(didn't look at the sellers name) .
Anyway , after the auction I confirmed the price with him , including shipping to Australia , then payed immediately using his "preferred method of payment"
which is paypal . Woke up the next day to an email from Paypal saying my money had been refunded from cuecomponents , no reason given and no email from cc to say why either .
Anyway , after finally recontacting him he smugly says "I don't trust overseas buyers using paypal first time" when they buy from him .
He then suggests I send him a Western Union money order with haste so as not to upset the deal .
I then informed him of a lower bodily cavity of his that should be an adequate place for the shafts .

Just to cap things off , I find he's stuck me on cuecomponents mailing list . I ask him to remove it and he say's no , do it yourself .

I can honestly say , illness or not , if he spoke to me like that in person he wouldn't speak to anyone again for quite some time !

I was absolutely shocked as every other USA supplier I've talked to have treated me with full respect and shown perfect manners !

sorry for the long rant but that guy is just a bum.

He sucks to deal with but ive bought several of his matched sets and luckily got fantastic shafts from what he sent me.... Also been very lucky price wise in comparison to what kind of shafts he sent me..............Ebay dealings only!!!!

I'm not surprised at that. The customer cannot stop payment on a money order. Nor can they leave negative feedback as can be done on eBay.
