Which chalk do you guys use?

It really doesn't matter to me because I chalk before each shot.

FYI, a did a careful and thorough set of tests comparing many popular brands of chalk. All of the results and conclusions can be found here:

Dave,

I'm the same way. Always chalk between shots. More to slow me down than fear of mis-cues. Been using Triangle brand chalk for more years than I can remember. Most rooms in the Northeast have Master brand. Found it flakes much more than Triangle. Far more residue on my hands and shafts. Carry roughly ten pieces in my case as I tend to leave it on the table.

Spoke with Chris Renfro at SBE. We discussed his new chalk. Been meaning to try it. Several cue makers I know have had excellent results with both his chalk and tips.

I really like the Predator chalk too. As for holders, any of the rubbery-plastic holders made for square chalk will work fine. The Predator chalk will squeeze in. I have gone through three of the Seyberts holders made specifically for the Predator chalk. The rubber pops off the retainer too easily.

Doc,

Try a medicine pill tube. Although I don't use Predator brand chalk, I find them left on tables from time to time. Took them home and experimented with containers. Have to admit, the chalk is pretty good.

I've seen the one that Brandon Grames did a review about, it's a great idea and looks like a solid product but I can't justify paying $20+ for a chalk holder. I also live outside of the U.S. and the shipping costs would contribute to the already high cost of the product. I've also wanted to buy the Predator Chalk holder (the one with the plastic pen insert to put in your pocket) but, again because I reside outside of the states, sellers on eBay and amazon charge $15 shipping for the item when the actual item only costs $11. I've messaged various eBay sellers and neither of them offer cheaper shipping alternatives. For the time being, I cut down the Predator chalk with a knife so it fits in my magnetic cube chalk holder that only costed me $5. For someone who resides outside the U.S, I find purchasing a chalk holder that fits Predator chalk relatively impossible without paying an unreasonable premium. It stresses me to the point where I'm considering of purchasing a different brand. It really sucks because I do enjoy the chalk and for it's price point.

I bought a cheap holder on ebay designed for predator chalk for around $6-$10, Have had no problems with it.

From your results, everyone should be using Magic Chalk or they are taking the worst of it. The results were not even close.
Magic Chalk did do better than all of the other chalks I tested on some of the tests; but if you chalk before every shot with Master chalk, the performance is really no different.

Here are the bottom line conclusions from my experiments: The brand of chalk doesn’t really matter much, unless you don’t chalk often or well enough, in which case Magic Chalk, Kamui or Blue Diamond might help; although, Kamui and Blue Diamond can result in more frequent cling/skid/kick. Remember, chalk before each shot, and keep the CB as clean as possible. Definitely wipe the CB off any time you get ball in hand, and before every game before breaking.

Dave

Hi Dave,

I'm aware of the comparison video that you did as well as all the other great videos you've uploaded, thank you taking the time to contribute to the billiard community. Each and every single one of your videos are very well thought out and thoroughly explained.

Would you be making a new chalk comparison video soon? There have been a lot of new brands on the market lately that have received some good praise.

Regards,
Nelson
Since my original chalk comparison video and article, I have tested Magic Chalk and Silver Cup chalk. The results are available on the chalk comparison resource page.

Also, "The Renfro" (Chris) has promised to send me some Great White chalk soon. When I get that I will also put that through the tests and add results to the resource page.

Also, one purpose for my chalk comparison video was to demonstrate procedures that are easy enough for anybody to follow so others can also easily do similar tests for any chalks they want to compare.

Regards,
Dave

Tried about all of them (Predator, Balabushka, Kamui, etc...) but Magic Chalk. Keep coming back to Master chalk though.

Been a while since we got this question on here. Probably over two weeks.

As to the question I always use Master. And use it exclusively.
Doesn't leave marks on the cueball, is still at a good price, and works as well as the expensive ones.

Blue Diamond all the way!........I tried the Magic Chalk version and it's sitting in my closet....all hype and no difference at all if you chalk often......if you don't, then MC can help but that's the "only" reason to use it....IMO.

I use blue Master chalk and occasionally a cube of Blue Diamond. It's hard to beat Master chalk for its price and effectiveness.

Predator, Blue Master or plain ol' Master, they all work fine.
Kamui is a f'ing mess, NIR is just expensive Blue Master.
I have yet to try Great White chalk.

I currently use Blue Diamond. I am trying out Great White from Outsville. I am really impressed at how well it stays on. The white specks on the table distract me though. I am looking forward to a blue version.

Pool room's Masters Blue - for casual play & being lazy
Own Predator - for serious play
Own Masters Brown - for test hitting a new cue & don't want to blue-stain the shaft

I had the manufacturer of my stick chalk it with Russian Magic Chalk before they shipped it to me. Haven't chalked 7 years since.

Seriously tho, blue masters. My pre shot routine includes chalking so I go with good and inexpensive.

When I scuff all the chalk off my tip I put a layer of kamui on it and then masters over that. I do the same with my break cue because for some reason the mezz pbp tip won't take masters unless I use kamui first
