Which cue?

So I've had the same Lucasi cue for 7 years since I was 12 or 13 when I first started taking the game seriously. After years of not the most ideal treatment the cue is starting to show its abuse. There is a slight rattle in the cue and its not quite as straight as I would like. Anyway, I have the ability to purchase cues from cuestix for wholesale price through my University since I instruct. This is a pretty hard deal to turn down so I'm trying to see what would be a solid pick. Seeing as how I like the way a Lucasi hits and I'm not a fan of LD shafts what would you guys reccommend? Any cue under 600 on the site will equate to under 400 wholesale or so which is my price range. https://www.cuestixint.com/poolcues.php
 
Cue help

I have shot with a handful of Lucasi's and have owned alot of them personally. They are great playing cues. It's actually what I shoot with now. And they have helped me beat many people who have really expensive custom made cues. It's all about how it feels to you. The Lucasi I use now is a custom edition with a radial pin joint, and it hits a ton. I have had it for three years, and many have tried to buy it from me. But no way. I mean this cue is fantastic. And the Radial pin joint gives it an even better hit than the uni-loc joint. I have broke with this cue ever since I got it, and it is still straight as an arrow. And it will crush the balls. I have a break speed of around 30mph, and the cue has held up very nicely. So I would say if you can get one with a radial pin, pick it up. But the uni-loc plays well also. If you have $600 (well effectively $600) I would say if you can go out and try some it would be a good idea. If you have played with Lucasi for ever I see no need to change unless you feel really want too. But with that sort of money you have a lot of choices of some pretty nice cues. You could try for instance any butt and go for one of the LD shafts, of which my preference would be an OB-2 or Tiger. I see there are also a couple of Schons on the site for that sort of price. OK it's getting more difficult as I type...........OMG I don't know! If I had to come down to two choices they would be:

1. Schon CX-68 or 69
2. Lucasi with an OB-2 or Tiger X Shaft

Man that took forever!
 
your Lucasi has been your friend and constant companion all these years - perhaps it's due a little loyalty & fidelity - do they carry the same model you have now ?
If you stay with the same model and weight , there will be little or no adjustment needed in your game .
Also , after buying a new cue , don't neglect your old friend - there are many cue repair shops that can make that Lucasi better than new
P.S. - if I read your post right , and did the math correctly , you're a college instructor at age 20 - maybe you should change your screen name to Doogie Howser !:grin:

FWIW, I will NEVER buy another cue without hitting a rack or two of balls with it first. I can't tell you how many cues I went through until I found the ones I now use as my main playing cues.

BTW, one of my league teammates recently purchased and uses a Lucasi Hybrid cue. I hit a couple racks of balls with it and I was suprisingly impressed with the feel and hit of that cue. But, the feel and hit of a cue is ALWAYS a matter of personal preference. But that cue, I would have been glad to have had it in my case.

So, seven years of ABUSING a Chinese-made cue, and it has still held up all those years, huh :wink:??? That bit of info's gonna pop some veins on some foreheads of a few people on this website :grin-square:! Sounds as though you got your money's worth outta that cue!!!

Good luck with your search for the perfect (or near-perfect) cue!!!

i'd just buy a newer version of the one you already have. try to limit the variables in how the cue is made

haha i had to look that up as I had never heard of it. Turned out to be before my day but what a hilarious premise for a show! Haha yes I am and what an amazing job to have. I wouldn't quite put that in the same ball park....med school grad by 16? it only took me 2 years to get my BA in deadstroking with a minor in hustlin :grin-square:

Truth is, I don't agree that the cuestix discount is that great. Any cuestick for under $600 on there you should be able to pick up gently used for less than $400 anyhow.

Shoot, I picked up a Bob Frey sneaky in nearly new condition for under $375. One of the best hitting cues I've had.

I'd suggest waiting for a while and trying a bunch of cues out, look at the wanted/for sale, etc. before pulling the trigger.

Thanks for your input! It's hard to make decisions when I don't have much to try out first. Everyone who plays here either has some cheap Players or bottom line McDermott or some beautiful 4 figure Madden custom. I'm just not ready yet for the responsibility of a child..er I mean custom cue :smile:

Under 400 for a nice sneaky eh? Sure sounds nice but its hard without having an idea of how it plays

I completely agree with that! It will be YEARS before I'll feel comfortable or confident about dropping any sort of serious money on a cue. And the good ole U of M:grin: you know, the winners :wink: Both schools are extremely fortunate to have good rooms. I've never seen MSU's, what do you guys have? GCIII or IV's?
 
This is an easy recommendation. Get the most expensive McDermott design that you like and can afford.

The Reasons
1) The more expensive McDs are made in USA.

2) more expensive McDs come with one of their low deflection shafts now and if you don't like it a regular shaft is reasonably priced.Which LD shaft depends on which cue.

3) LIFETIME warranty...I repeat LIFETIME warranty.

4) Registered McDs are eligible for the McDermott maintenance program
just send it back up to twice a year and they'll polish,inspect, retip,etc

Thanks for your advice! Which shaft is that the G Core? As much as I hate to admit it that is one cue I hit that I really liked. And the weird thing is I'm not a fan of LD shafts.

G Core and on the even more expensive cues I-shafts come standard. The G core is geared more towards giving something like a great stiff wood shaft feel than most other LD shafts. You might not like an I-shaft.

They actually got rid of centennials and anniversary's when they put those in. Sold the old tables for like $1000 each.

$400 is pretty serious money on a cue and you should be able to find something that you will love for years.

Next time I drive from Seattle to Boz I might have to stop by UM (the hippie school) and hit a few balls with ya'.

Even though you are getting a discount I think if you pop over to the buy/sell forum and ask what cues are available for $400 you will be surprised what you can buy at that price. For example I purchased a Jacoby that is wrapless with a segmented handle and 6 points. It came with two shafts. It cost $480. I saw a online site selling almost the same Jacoby for $900.

U of M has the nicest room in Missoula.:) Have been there a few times since I'm up the road about 50 miles. More tables etc than any place in western Montana. Are you in MT for the school year or live here year round? Maybe I will see you at one of the local tournaments - you can try out my playing cue.

Hell nicest room in Montana if you ask me! I'm surprised I don't see you down here more. Tournaments every other Sunday at 2pm starting this coming Sunday! We would love to see you down here. Just got brand new tourney blue simonis 2 weeks ago!

Yup born in raised in Missoula and live here year round. I met you last year at the Wild West very briefly. I play with Chase Guthrie and Jimmy and some of the other boys who go up to Ronan periodically. I turn 21 in a couple months so that explains why I don't make it to some of the tourneys and see all the players from around the state much.

I would love to hit one again! Only got to hit a couple shots with one. Hopefully soon.
