Which instructor do you recommend?

I am considering getting some instruction to try and get better. I have seen many people on here touting their system and their classes.

Which instructor have you personally used and found to be very good for what you paid?

I have access to a pro that I think is giving lessons. What about using a pro that has been on tour as an instructor?

Thanks

Joe Tucker, I am not sure where you are located but if I had to I would even fly him out he is that good! Of course only if you are ok financially and all. He knows the rack better than anyone and that's half the battle plus he offers a lot more than just the rack

LEE BRETT, he is putting together another us your across us and stops wherever there is interest. Best money I've ever spent on lesson!!

There is an ask the instructor section on this forum I believe. This might be a good place for you to get in touch with someone, or at least read some review/instructor material.

I would personally recommend Scott Lee. Great teacher, and gives you the tools to keep your game sharp.

I've had lessons from Scott Lee, Stan Shuffett and Stevie Moore. I'd highly recommend all three. Which one to choose would depend on your location and what you're looking to learn.

Jerry Briesath, the grandmaster of the instruction field.

Mark Wilson would also be a fantastic choice.

Are all the instructors mentioned above, highly priced? I live in the NY area and just PM'ed Fran Crimi to try and set up a couple lessons. I was hesitant to seek an instructor before but now I have more time and financially capable. Do you guys recommend any in the NY area? I already know of Tony Robles and Earl.

Scott Lee no doubt. He can record your stroke, break it down for you and tailor his teaching towards your inconsistencies. Well worth it imo

I'm really hoping to be able to swing a little time with Jerry this summer when he's back in Madison. In the summer he teaches out of the room I play at usually...I really want some help nailing down my fundamentals before I put in too much time with bad habits.

I took a lesson with Fran and got a lot out of it. I will definitely contact her again if/when I get to NYC again.

In my case. Randy G, pool school best money i ever spent.
The oyster videos are awsome for the money
The pro book system for training is priceless

But i think no matter who you take lessons from ,it depends on you as a student what u get out of it. . I have to tell myself over an over dont let what you already know get in the way of learning something new. ... . That was the first thing i ever learned about pool. Got that lesson on the phone with Randy G while i was inquiring about pool school. .

I went to Madison, WI years ago to take lessons from Jerry. I had to park on the top level of some hotel, and walk a few blocks to the pool hall. I was the only student at the time, Jerry said I just missed Jeanette(BW) Lee, but sitting at the bar was Larry Nevel, not there for lessons, just where he hung out I guess.....pretty cool!

I know there are many qualified instructors in NYC, but I'm pretty sure you will be happy with Fran. Here's a link to the review I wrote after my lesson with her:

Hope it works out for you.

First find out if they believe in or teach any CTE based aiming system (which are tin foil hat wearing type baloney and do not at all do what they claim they do). If they do believe in it, it proves that they are not very smart or knowledgeable and you should run for the hills and never even consider them for any kind of lesson ever as they are incompetent. Fair disclosure: there are quite a few (in my opinion misguided) people who believe in those systems and their opinion would be the exact opposite and they would say to specifically seek out that type of instructor as opposed to one who does not teach a CTE based system. But this is my opinion and recommendation and they are entitled to theirs. Now if you can tell us where you are located we may be able to guide you to someone specific that is good.

WOW!! Some people just don't know what they don't know. Not saying CTE is necessarily for everyone, but it certainly does work. Please don't listen to this guy.

The only person listed above that I had a lesson with was Scott Lee. I learned a lot and was given good tools to improve with. I would love to have a lesson from many of the above named people. I have always heard that Bert Kinister was really able to take people's game up a few notches quickly.

What worries me about someone taking lessons is the degree some instructors expect their students to change everything about their game. I had a friend who was a B+ player, and just needed some help with position play, maybe a few more tweaks here and there. He went to a well known instructor, and when he returned he had a totally different stance, bridge, grip...etc! He was told to practice this way, and he would soon reap the rewards. After a few months of this he tried to go back to his old ways, but had lost some of that too. He finally got so frustrated he quit altogether.

The instructor told him he had to change his stance, and form...I wonder what would happen if Allison Fisher, side arm Willie Hoppe, Keith McCready or some of the other pros with different stances or form were to show up? Would he drastically change them too? Some people just need a little adjustment, not a complete makeover. The instructor might argue that the people I mentioned are pros, and that's different, but if they would have come to him the day before they were pros they would look the same....some instructors, even well known ones, hurt more than they help!

I recommend all of the instructors listed here:

Pool Schools and Well-known Billiards Instructors

Billiard University (BU) Instructors

They all provide high-quality instruction.

Good luck,
Dave

I would also like to recommend The Game, as it ultimately is the teacher. ;)

Can Spimp please make a meme out of this one?

In NYC - I highly recommend Mark Finkelstein (Mark <nycpool@gmail.com>)- he is a PBIA Master Instructor, affordable and very knowledgeable - in the 15 minutes I spent with him he did wonders on my game.
