I hardly ever post here, mostly just lurk and read. This topic has come up more than once lately and i somehow felt the need to post. You may call me old(57) and a dinosaur, but I do not understand not posting a price you want for an item. I know of nowhere that one goes to buy goods where the retailer, wholesaler, seller tells their customer, or prospective one:
1)"Make me an offer. I am not going to tell you the price for which I want to sell the item."
2)"I do not make my prices public. We will have to discuss the price in private where no one else will know."
If you want to sell a cue, simply mark the cue up what you consider a fair profit and negotiate from that starting point. This just seems too easy to me. What is the problem???

Both. But the funny thing is half the offers never get responded to. Which brings up another point, if you are going to use this type of sales tactic, you should respond to all PM's and follow through when the cue has sold.
People should be aware that when you see this type of listing that the seller probably has no clue to the value of what he is selling, or is just afraid to undersell the item.
But there is also one reason that no one talks about. You just ripped someone else off and if they see you list it for full boat, you're going to get snagged. I would bet 2 of 10 listings this applies to.
The real question I have is "Does anyone know where I can get a Patrick cue?"

Asking for an offer - to me - is basically an insult to the potential buyer. It is up to the seller to establish a price he/she wants for the item.
Last year I was in the market for a new Jaguar. I went to the first dealer and the salesman and I talked about the car and we finally got to the price. I mentioned the sticker price and what went with the car and he started by asking me how much I wanted to spend. I didn't answer him and the opportunity for negotiation went by the way side. For him it was a very poor approach to start out with how much I wanted to spend. Also a stupid question IMO. The deal went nowhere and I proceeded to another dealer. Negotiating is a very pure and simple approach to any item for sale. By him trying to entangle me into making and offer really limits the opportunity to talk about price. It also puts me on the defensive and I tend to back off. There are sooooooo many cues cars, whatever, available for sale no one really has to play games with a seller.

I, too, find both annoying...and here's why:
This is a Wanted/For Sale Section. You either put out there what you want, and are willing to spend for it, or you put out there what you have for sale, with a price listed.
The 'PM Offers' or 'PM for Price' is too much like a 'behind the scenes' blind auction...and this is not an auction site. if you would like to entertain offers, then pony up the eBay fees, or take it to Proficient's CueAuction site.
If you would like to know what a particular cue might bring...then ask just that...'What is My Cue Worth?'...and you will likely get some BS answers, but you will also get valid answers from those who have been here, and have that type of first hand knowledge. If it is a perceived highly collectible cue, that someone perhaps left to you....then PM the likes of JoeV @ classiccues, Sean @ cueaddicts, Marcus (FAST N LOOSE)...or any of the other few that know their 'stuff'. If it is a particular cuemaker..look to those here who specialize in that cuemaker's cues....TATE/Palmers, runscott and TATE/old Brunswicks, FAST N LOOSE/Tascarellas...the list goes on.
There is such a treasure trove of knowledge and resources here, that 'fishing' for a price is not really necessary. For those who are looking to buy...it works both ways...if you are not sure that a listed and/or quoted price is fair, ASK! Or...do a search, both here, and net-wide, and see what certain cues are bringing currently. It's called doing your homework.
Lastly...if someone DOES list a selling price, and you do not like it, keep it private or keep it to yourself!! Nothing can kill a For Sale thread quicker than a discussion of the seller's pricing. If you want them to list a price, then you need to be willing to accept that that is what they are asking, and either make a counter-offer privately, or move on. I have no doubt that part of this problem stems from this type of behavior in those threads where the price IS actually listed.

As someone mentioned earlier, this is not an auction site. With the invitation to "make me an offer" is an invitation to disaster.
Have you ever gone to the Jersey boardwalk or a barn auction and the auctioneer starts the bidding and no one answers and then he asks what am I offerd for this item. This is where the confidence game starts.

Very Annoying
I find both annoying..Put the damn price up on the board so we have an idea of the price you have in mind..If you want $3000 then put $3200 and work from there..But this PM me for price is bull...I am sure some of the sellers have different prices for different customers..Not a problem if i think the price is right..But having to PM or give a best offer is bull...Best offer would be ok if the seller has a price on the cue and is willing to take a little less... Don

I think prices should be posted... but that's just me. JMO. I never "PM for price".
But the "make offer" is the most annoying. I know of a seller who advertised a cue for something like $3600. When it didn't sell they then asked for offers. A potential buyer offered $2800 and he was lambasted for being a low baller. Go figure.

I HAVE A "I DON'T MAKE OFFERS" POLICY. AS A RULE I DON'T EVEN IF ITS A CUE I'M INTERESTED IN. MAYBE FOR THE RIGHT TASCARELLA, BUT NOT ON A REGULAR BASIS.
