OK im having a break cue made by my friend Mike Yingling. What im wanting to get everyones opinion on is with the white diamond tips what are other cue makers doing for ferrule with this tip and a verry stiff shaft?
I was thinking about using phenolic ferrule, should i put one of those thin backing pads on it ?

Does Mike have experience with white diamond tip? What I mean is...do they stay on for him.

I love that tip... it jumps and breaks great.

In my experience... it doesn't stay on. I have had them stay on for 1 rack to 6 months. Eventually all that I put on fell off. It seems they come off on an off center hit and they "tiddly wink" off. I had the same guy pop off 3 of them.... now he thinks I don't know how to put on a tip. I switched to a one piece phenolic tip/ferrule.

I know that some people claim to have them on forever..... but...

I stopped using them.

I heard that the resin that is in the tip has a substance that the glue bond has trouble sticking to.

I have heard another method of installing them that I haven't tried yet. I have tried CA gel, CA rubberized, gorilla glue CA, and epoxy.

BTW a pad under the tip will defeat the purpose of a hard tip.

He put one on the break cue i have now i wanted to get a feel for the tip( that was the first one he had seen) but i have had it on 3 weeks now with no problems at all..

EightballJunkie thanks ill check that out.

I cant remember where I read this but someone suggested lightly scoring the ferrule in a criss cross pattern with a razor blade. I started doing this when I installed White Diamonds and I havent had one come back yet.

White Diamond Tips,

I have installed about 30 of these tips and initially it was a learning process about what was the best approach in preparation of the ferrule and tip surfaces and the right type of adhesive to use.

Understand that the white diamond tip is a complex matrix of materials, so the right bonding agent is always important in havin the three components meld properly. Remember you have the Ferrule Material and preparation as well as the bonding (gluing agent) and the Tip itself.

All I will say is that take your time in the trial and error process and the trick is to maintain an aerobic bond to the tip and ferrule, you dont want it so brittle of a bond that the impact of jumping or breaking creates a fracturing effect of the bonding agent between the solid structures (tip and ferrule)

Hope this starts you in the right direction.

I have a small pro shop in Clearwater/Largo, right next to the Crooked Cue Billiards hall, I see the guy asking about this originally is from the Clearwater area, so I offer to have him drop by, "The Cue Man, Kennedys' Pool Accessories" and we can talk about this further. Good luck,

Or, give me a call @ 727-277-9853

yeah mike we have talked before i got the tips from you actually.

Hey Mike,

I couldnt tell from the picture if this was the, "mike" that i had dealt with before. anyway, hope everything worked out on the jump break application.

If there is any problem let me know,

I just sent an e-mail to Mike Yingling at his Pro Shop, if you see him, tell him to give me a call and we can make an introduction to each other.

Also, I was playing the Stinger Team on the Tavern League on Tuesday and one of the guys I have known for a while, I dont know if you know him or not, his name is, Derrick, he showed me a custom cue that Mike had made from a Louisville Slugger and had mad a shaft from it,

The idea process was pretty unique.

Anyway, I was under the weather for a few days so i wasnt at the shop, but today is Thursday and I should be around for the next few days, Stop in and Say Hello!!

Take er Easy

THE CUE MAN

I recently installed a white diamond tip on a customers jump break cue. I used loctite ultra gel control. It fell off on the first break. Both the bottom of the tip and the ferrule were scored. The ferrule was an uncapped short ferrule. Next I then used loctite 5 minute epoxy, 3200 psi. It popped off after 4 breaks.
The ultra control gel was new, only 2 - 3 weeks open. Bought about 1 month before and kept in a refrigerator before and after opening. It was allowed to come up to room temperature before using. The epoxy was brand new, first use.
Joey, I would really appreciate your input, you recommended 3-M dp420. Does this really work to your expectation? Have you personally used it? My reputation is on the line as the tip was on the manager of our local pool hall in Green Bay and I have been doing their tips for them for the last couple of years. I am also wondering if any one has ever experienced a bad batch of ultra gel control? I know this is a old thread, but this is really bothering me. Any and all help would be appreciated!
Thank You, Jim

I found a way to keep those tips on...... I have not had one pop off since I started doing this......................
