Who do you root for?

So if you ask a football fan what team is "their team", it sometimes has to do with geography (I was a Redskins fan before I knew what football even was, growing up in the DC area, with a father who also grew up in the DC area), it sometimes has to do with family loyalty (a friend of mine couldn't marry his then-girlfriend now-wife until he converted to a Steelers-supporter so her family would allow him in), and it sometimes has to do with childhood admiration of a certain player (many 49ers fans are fans just because they were inspired by Joe Montana or Jerry Rice). Very rarely is someone's stated reason for being a fan of a certain team "because they're the best at winning football games".

But in threads on here where people talk about their favorite players, the discussion is all about who's better than who; who's got the best stroke, the best control, the best calm under pressure, the best heart when betting big cash, etc.

So my question is, do you have, separate from your opinions about who's the best, a player you just like to root for? A player who has some X-factor that makes you watch accu-stats or youtube or ESPN hoping they'll do well?

I do. It's Francisco Bustamante. I don't think he's currently the best 9-ball player in the world, although at certain times in his career he may have been playing the best of anyone. But before I was a serious player, I saw him playing 9-ball on ESPN in the challenge of champions, and was incredibly impressed by his control and how easy he made it look.

Now that I know the game better, I know he's just one of a class of several players who make the game appear totally effortless and make their CB look like it's under their hypnotic control when they're in stroke. But I was so impressed by the way he ran the balls on ESPN that day in the 90's, that I still find I root for him when watching video, and I still get a sort of satisfaction when he wins, sort of like those rare occasions when the Redskins do something right.

So, without talking about who you think is the best, who's your favorite pool player to root for?

Male - Johnny Archer: I've always enjoyed every watching his matches.
Female - Monica Webb: Always inspired me to not give up (and no, i haven't met her, but her demeanor wears well on her)

Male= Earl when he's the old Earl

Female= X Pan but I enjoy watching most of them

I'm actually embarrassed to admit it, but ever since I watched him win the 1982 Dayton Open 9-ball tournament, beating Buddy Hall in the finals, I find myself rooting for Earl. Sorry, but that's the truth. And yes, I agree with all of those who point out ad nauseam that he can be an A$#hole when playing.

My Favorite

I have a favorite pro player who I root for at all time. But then, I am prejudiced in his favor, and I have good reason to be, I am his Dad.

Mike Davis, from Mike Davis Sr.

I root for Danny Harriman. I think that Danny really stands up for what he believes in. He has taken stands where other players have not. I have a lot of respect for him as person from afar. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders and if we had more people like him involved with pool, the game would be better off for it.

I always root for Buddy now that we have become friends. I know that he can whine and cry but he has been great to me. I have to pull for him every time out. He has taught me a lot about the game of one pocket and I thank him for it. How many other legends will spot you a ton AND play for only 5.00 a game one pocket AND give your pointers along the way.

These are two people that I have some respect for in the pool community. I love to watch them play and love to watch them win.

For some reason, I also always find myself pulling for Scott Frost. I dont really know why but I do. I love watching him play and he plays on his own cash alot...or so I hear. I respect that.

I have always rooted for Corey. Since I first saw him at Steepleton's in Lex. at one of their tournaments. He played a brutal safety on Dallas West and Dallas jumped out of it and ran out. The look on Corey's face was total shock. Although Corey played really good back then it was obvious he had just been introduced to the big leagues. And the other reason is because he is so close to my age.

Keith, Earl, Monica Webb

If I had to make a pick it could only be narrowed down this far.

Earl - I'll be an Earl fan forever.

Keith McCready - raw excitement

Monica Webb - wears her emotions on her sleeve along with being a top-player

For me its Stevie Moore. I have known Stevie for a long time and its nice to see him doing well in the bigger events since he gave up the road life. I also like to root for Mike Davis. I have met him a couple of times and he is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He always encourages players who are up and coming and treats everyone the same. JMO.

My favorite memory of Mike was when I was at the 2006 Bar Table Championships in Reno. Mike was practicing before his finals match against Edwin Montell and they had some people there filming the match and doing a documentary.

As Mike is practicing he really strokes the cue ball and cue ball goes flying off the table and the main guy in charge of the filming picks up the cue ball. Mike motions for him toss the cue ball to him and the guy gives him a smirk and throws the ball OVERHAND directly at Mikes head. I'm talking this ball had some speed behind it. Mike catches the ball with one hand a split second before the ball could have knocked him out directly before a match he was playing for $10,000. Mike just grinned and proceeded practicing. I commented to someone sitting beside what an idiotic thing that was to do and Mike overheard me and just grinned like he agreed.

He then went on to beat Edwin. Another thing that came up during the match which gave me more respect for him was that the 9 ball kept falling in on the break in the back corner pockets. Which means there are usually gaps behind the 9. Mike made 3 or 4 9's but he was not happy about it and kept getting the TD to keep rerack. He said that he didn't want to win that way. I thought it was very classy of him.

Thank you and the others for the nice things you have to say about Mike. :D

And it is a good thing I was not there, someone would have been reported for that action.

Me, by dam. I root for me. And occasionally McCready, Earl, and all of the old schoolers. Hopkins, and I will throw in Stevie Moore, and Tony Watson since I've battled against 'em and with them.

I root for Stevie Moore because I've known him so long and also root for Corey and Shannon because I know them well and have played golf with them and partied on different occasions. I went on the road with Shannon and Corey always calls when he is going to be in or around Georgia. Stevie went out with us pretty much once a month or so for years and years.
