Who would have thought an unheralded qualifier will end up number 1 in the standing after the first round? He won all his games in his group including a surprising win over Corey Deuel with a score of 8-2. He beat the other 2 in his group with similar 8 to 3 scores. Even Efren singled him out in an article published a day before the tournament started:

Reyes named Dennis Orcollo, Gandy Valle, Marlon Manalo, Lee Van Corteza and upcoming Roberto Gomez as among the players to watch.

"Yang si Gomez, talagang gumagaling na," Reyes bared. "At talagang mas maganda ang tsansa dito dahil sa marami ang mga Pilipino (players) at magkakahiwalay pa ng bracketing sa umpisa. Suportado pa ng fans at mga kompanya, lalong-lalo na ang San Miguel."


Has anyone ever seen him play before? How would you describe his playing abilities compared to the other young guns like Deluna, Pena and Corteza? How come we never heard about him before? I hope we see him play tomorrow on the tv table.

I had never heard of him before he signed up for the 8-ball Battle of Scandinavia one week before the WPC.

Then I saw that he won the first qualifier, and now being seeded as nr 1 after groupstages! Think it's cool, but think he will have a hard time playing Efren/Orcollo next round, if he wins...

His nickname over here is Superman, if that helps. He is just one of about two dozen young players in Manila who shoot A+ Pool. Players like DeLuna, Cortezza, Pena and Gomez are the equal of the best we've got in the states. All the above play close to Efren and Alex's speed in 9-Ball.

And they can all play for the cash too. In fact they love it. If I see them in games with any of the foreign players, I'm betting on them. One big edge, beside home court advantage. They KNOW these tables. There are more just like them set up in the main rooms in Manila. These guys have the speed down pat. No one plays better position than Dennis and friends.

The first in qualifier. The top rank after elimination. His nick is Superman as Jay said. Don't you guys think he's a winner? ;) Hopefully, I didn't jinx him. :D

I have had the pleasure of being host for Roberto Gomez and Jharome Pena for 5 days in Norway, playing the 8-ball Battle of Scandinavia.

Jharome Pena lost in the groupstages in the tournament, meeting players as Thomas Engert, Ronny Oldervik (won the group), Imran Majid, Ivica Putnik.

Roberto Gomez lost for Niels Feijen in the quarterfinal of the tournament, Feijen won the tournament. (See my post in the thread Niels Feijen)

This was the first 8-ball tournament for both players, and I had to teach them the complete rules after watching their first match... ;)

During the week Roberto Gomez tried straight pool for the first time. He got 3 tries to make a high run in a competition where the 8 players with the highest breaks would proceed to a single KO tournament.

His first try? He didn't know how to play the breakball, and got a bad break. Then a spectator showed him how to open the rack on the opening break, and Gomez ran 83 on his second try playing straight pool, only beaten by Darren Appleton's 83 during the week...

Both Jharome and Roberto played in the Special Event of the week, a 9-ball tournament facing Niels Feijen, Marcus Chamat, Raj Hundal, Darren Appleton, Joonas Ohtonen and local Kim Garmark for 5000 $ first price.

Roberto won, Jharome finised second.

I have to admit that I have NEVER seen any player like Roberto Gomez. Yes, Feijen, Souquet and Hohmann are great, fantastic players that almost never miss, but they don't have all the crazy shots that Roberto has.

I backed him in some small money games in 8-ball and one-pocket and that players is just awesome. He did 5 rail bankshots, combinations and some incredible shots. I just loved watching him play!

A coming world champion, and a coming all around Derby winner!

Luckily I get the chance to watch them play again in 10 days, since I am heading for Manila for two weeks. Can't wait!

Thanks for the report Roy. Wow, an 83 in his second attempt ever at straight pool? And making it the quarters in such a strong field, considering it was his first 8-ball tourney? Crazy.

You have any pictures of this Gomez kid? Thanks.

EDIT: I'd also like to hear more about that 17-year old runner up. Maybe you should create another thread on the main forum completely about this tournament (if you haven't already).

Thanks for the info Darren. From what I read, Gomez is about 27, which is the about the same age as Orcullo and Pagulayan. Do you regard Gomez as better than those two monsters? Or do you just mean that Gomez is the best "up and coming" player in the Philippines?

He looks like a younger Busta :D .... well i hope he has the skill and creativity like Busta.
 
wouldnt put him in that class as yet but he certainly got the potential ,but at moment unproven!
